Neogaf 2012 Backlog Blitz - Where we give the middle finger to Steam sales

I may have bought quite a lot of games last month, but I only spent $10 in total for that. It was for the iTunes card to buy Raiden Legacy earlier in December while Bug Panic and Super Hexagon were Christmas purchases from the extra money left. Kingdom Rush was free so I snagged it, Twinbee was also free from Club Nintendo and Grandia was bought from the extra money from my PSN wallet after I bought Persona 4 Golden last November. So I guess I still had some control on my spending and more importantly, still no Steam Sale purchase for me which I find to be quite a big achievement already.

It also took me three weeks of on and off play to get the Platinum on Persona 4 Golden which is my third and fourth playthrough and its still as impressive as I remembered playing it years ago. Anyway, for impressions on bought games, Raiden Legacy was all new to me. While I find each game fantastic (I suck at them though) controls are disappointing especially coming from Caves ports since its not as precise. Kingdom Rush was a surprise to me, possibly the best Tower Defense game I've played on iOS and I keep on replaying it! I dont know what to say to Twinbee, all I can say is that it feels like Xevious cant complain though since its free. Bug Panic on the other hand was a bit disappointing, I guess its because Im not a big fan of twin-stick shooters and its difficult to control using touchscreens. Super Hexagon was another fantastic game. It has this "Just one more try!" addictive gameplay to it and music is catchy as hell too! Grandia on the other hand might as well be one of the best RPGs Ive played which surprised me since its the first time I played it. Only around 10+ hours since Im kinda busy but can't wait to experience more from the game especially the battle system.

This is currently my final score for 2012 and hope someone creates a new one for 2013. This really helped me thin out my backlog and also a lesson for me to control my buying habits. If I didn't join this, I would have bought more games and my backlog would still be there. Goal for 2013 is to reduce my backlog to the point that I will replay my games since I have nothing left to play. Im currently unemployed so I really need to reduce my spending and Im hoping that I would buy less than 10 games in first six months of 2013.

Finished in December 2012 (-1):

Far Cry 3 - Exactly what I thought would happen this month, buy a bunch of games but really only focus on finishing this one. Luckily it's pretty fun. Wish the story was better though.

Currently Playing:

Borderlands 2 - Started from scratch on PC and bought the season pass.
Far Cry 3 - Replaying on PC cuz it looks so dang good.
various others - I started several of the new games I bought and am deciding how to pace myself. Think I may finish Hotline Miami as quick as I can and then jump into Mark of the Ninja and Fez.

Dragon Quest IX: Sentinel of the Starry Skies (12/27) -- Got this one in just under the wire and I'm surprised I did. I just didn't want this game to end. I loved pretty much everything about this game. In fact the only thing I didn't enjoy about the game is the completely stupid accents that SE continues to insist on using for this series. It got so bad that there were some conversations I just skipped because I didn't feel like translating their "english" into english.

Previous games played:
The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass (1/1)
Flight Control HD (1/5)
Dungeons of Dredmor (1/12)

I bought more than I expected this year but I've done pretty well overall. For 2013 I'm imposing a rule of no new games until my backlog is less than 10. It's currently 25 so it should be doable.

This thread was a bit fun to follow, and I think I ended up with about 20 beaten games, and 15 new games bought, of which I beat about half. Can't do any scores since a handful of the rest games - Saints Row 3, FTL, Fez, Borderlands 2, The Last Express - are games that I don't really care about I beat them. I have played them enough to know what I think about them.

There's going to be a 2013 thread right? I'm going to try and take care of this massive backlog that I have right now.

Do games you receive as gifts count as games you bought?

I count gifted games except for PS+ freebies. Those I only count if I ever boot them up. It would be impossible for me to get a positive score otherwise.

Yes there is! Sorry about the delay, I was out of town and today is the first time I have had a chance to sit down and work on it. Ideally it will be up later today.

I beat a game just now. Will wait for the 2013 thread since it is 2013 after all, plus I already did my "final update" for 2012.

Thanks Guest1321, looking forward to it!

Bought:

Heavy Rain- A used copy of this was in a clearance bin at Blockbuster, and I'd been meaning to get this for a long time.

Lone Survivor- I was doing kind of okay at controlling my impulses before the Christmas Steam sale started.

Journey- And then I also began getting Christmas presents. This was the first. I plan to play it before the 19th of this month because I suspect I'll be writing about it in the GAF GOTY thread.

Crimson Shroud- I'd been planning to get this on the eShop since its localization was announced. I'm super glad it got brought over, had to support that.

Guns of Icarus Online- Another gift, and a game I cannot beat! Love what I've played so far, though. Co-op airship skirmishes are the fucking best. I've been maining Engineer, though Pilot is also fun. IT IS ON SALE FOR THE NEXT TEN HOURS AS OF THIS POST GET IT

Cherry Tree High Comedy Club- The last gift of the month, and I did not know this game existed before I received it. The friend who got it for me knows I like quirky games though, and this definitely qualified. Or it did on the surface, anyway.

McPixel- I had played the original LudumDare version of this back when it was created and it was cute. I'd been curious on how it expanded into a full game, the Steam sale was the final push I needed to check it out.

The Walking Dead (PC)- I ignored it the first time Steam put it on sale this month. Then it won a bunch of GiantBomb GOTY awards. I begrudgingly got it the second time, will try to play through in time for the GAF thread's deadline.

Beaten:

Final Fantasy X- Finally! The first mainline FF I've beaten, actually. I liked it a lot, even though it's not perfect. It's currently my 3rd, maybe even second favorite FF overall. I'm planning on playing through IX, my current favorite, again this year to see if it keeps that ranking, and also to finally beat it. FFX took me like half a year on and off, so we'll see how that goes. I tend to shy away from lengthier RPGs during the endgame for some reason.

Cherry Tree High Comedy Club- The presentation was surprisingly nice, especially the soundtrack, but the gameplay got a bit tedious and repetitive. I'm not going to bother going for the best ending.

McPixel- This is also a game with really fun presentation that eventually got dull.

To The Moon- It feels weird to count this because it was essentially a visual novel without much input besides moving the character from cutscene to cutscene, and a few (very easy) puzzles. But it's a pretty solid visual novel, a very impressive indie effort, and one worth "reading".

Year In Review:

In my November post I said "Let's see if I can keep myself from reaching -20 this year," and I barely reached that shitty last-minute goal. However this thread actually motivated me to beat more games than I beat last year, and it was a really fun way to keep track of my collection. Writing these brief impressions has also helped me feel vaguely productive, so I'm definitely on board for the 2013 thread. Hopefully my progress rate improves again this year!

guest1321, thanks for creating the new thread!

And for the record, I ended 2012 with -36. Had a few more deep sale impulse buys at the end there. :)
