Bonnaroo 2012 |OT| The boys of radio head out to phish in the red hot sun #1

4 of the best days ever. 80,000 happy campers. 700 Acres of Tennessee Nature. 150 epic performances. 10+ stages of music. Several dozen comedians. An escape into Excitement. Music. Art. Discoveries. Trees. Fresh Air. Green Grass. A mini film fest. Friends (Old / New). Adventure. Overwhelming happiness. Hugging a stranger by accident. Sharing and Generosity. Bonnaroovian Dancing. Hyperbolic verbiage. System overload. The perfect bite of ice cream. Sandals. Fallovers. Chirping Birds. Flashing Lights. Food and Drink. Variety. Singing. Laughing. Short shorts. High-Fives. Rocky IV in the cinema tent at 3am. Spicy Pie. Memories. Someone dressed up like Teen Wolf. Holy Cow(!) Moments. Interesting factoids. More music. Adventure. Deep Breaths. Big smiles. This. That. The Other. Hellos and Goodbyes and reminders of all that we have to celebrate and look forward to next year and in the future.

Bonnaroo is a music festival held in the middle of a farm in the middle of Tennessee that prides itself on 100% self-sustainability. There are many activities to the end of eco-friendliness, but at its core, it's about camping and listening to music with like minded folks.

Our festival site is a beautiful 700-acre farm, located in Manchester, TN, about 60 miles southeast of Nashville and 40 miles northwest of Chattanooga. Once a year, our little farm becomes Tennessee’s 7th largest city—basically overnight. This can mean traffic, lots of it, when you arrive at the festival site. So consider carpooling. It helps reduce traffic, saves money on gas and the earth will love you.

June 7-10

General admission is now on sale

Band schedule will go here when it's available.

Listen to the Spotify playlist of every artist!

And the fake was fake!

Radiohead, Phish, Beach Boys, Umphrey's McGee, and Ben Folds Five are worth the price alone.

My wife and I are doing VIP this year after missing the last two years.

I would have flown out to Tennessee if Prince had really been playing.

Pretty happy that Prince isn't going, to be honest. It sets the stage for another epic Radiohead marathon, and makes them the biggest act by a mile.

Gary Clark Jr. is something special. I had a chance to see him play a dive bar in Bryan, TX about 5 years ago. I can't wait to see how much he's grown musically.

That's the real fun of these things. Yeah at night you go and see some headliners and they're awesome, but a lot of the times you just head out and find some "nobody" who ends up being your favorite of the whole event.

I'm familiar with a lot of the undercard (Grouplove, The War on Drugs, and El Mariachi Bronx are all excellent), but the fun begins now when I research the artists I've never heard of.

I've been a HUGE Ben Folds/Five fan since I was a kid. I've seen Ben seven or eight times before but I didn't think I'd ever see Ben Folds Five after missing out on tickets for the Myspace Show. That show alone almost justifies the price of my VIP ticket. Then you throw in The Roots, Beach Boys, Black Star, Major Lazer, Bon Iver, Alice Cooper, etc., etc.? Man, I can't wait!

Has anyone ever done the VIP? I've never felt the need to pony up for it since I always thought some of the fun was getting gross and dirty with everyone else in the fields of mud. Plus they always looked like assholes (no offense) when they would just cut lines and crap with their showered bodies and shopping bags. Or maybe I was jealous. Nah.

- Flying Lotus
- St. Vincent
- Little Dragon
- The Black Lips
- PHANTOGRAM
- The Joy Formidable
- The Antler
- Here we go Magic

ok, not as shitty as i first made out to be. Actually, its pretty ok. Just shitty headliners (except Radiohead.... i suppose)

I've never done it before. It was a requirement from my wife to get her to go. It seems fairly nice though. You're close by, have an easy entrance to Centeroo, showers and actual bathrooms, air conditioned tents, and large camping spots. I remember going in '09 and the walk from Centeroo to my campsite was at least 25 minutes which sucked when deciding on what to pack with you.

You have a fucking awesome time camping out and being surrounded by lots of cool laid back people.

That's just not worth the money to me. What I remember from bonnaroo was waking up at 7 in the morning from the unbearable heat and sitting outside with all the other people who woke up because it was too hot. It sounds horrible, and it kinda was, but you know, it was fun.

Yeah the packing can be a pain. My motto for those days was 'not worry about it' and it worked pretty well. I had water and money, that's all I ever found myself needing.

I haven't done VIP yet, but I did go with an Artists lanyard back in 2008. I actually camped in the middle of Centeroo with the Such & Such group (fire people). It's definitely nice to be close to the center.

Showers, flushable toilets, close to Centeroo, and a private low-security entrance to Centeroo make it worth it for me.

I got my VIP tickets! Now to sit patiently for 4 months.

I spaced out while playing Skyrim and forgot to order Atlanta Radiohead tickets. This is a very nice second chance.

Bands you should acquaint yourselves with: Phish (Rift, Lawnboy, Junta, Billy Breathes), Umphrey's McGee (live shows... search Youtube), the Avett Brothers (Emotionalism, I & Love & You), Ben Folds Five (Entire catalog).

Yeah he's been there what 5 years in a row now?

And he talked about going there in that popular stand up of his. Where he went to the pipe jungle or whatever and didn't get it. Then went back on drugs and thought it was the greatest thing ever.

So yeah sarcasm.

Been going to Bonnaroo every year since 03 and this is the first show i will miss which is a huge bummer but at the same time i am not that sad because the quality of the show has been declining over the years as they bring in shittier and shittier mainstream rappers.

I didn't mind the bigger known bands that were actually good like Pearl Jam, Flaming Lips, Bob Dylan, Widespread Panic etc. but then they started bringing 50 cent and Kanye.. ugh. Regardless i am sure this year will still be excellent and if i didn't already mistakenly made plans for June 8th-15th i would go.

You'll get two spots. When you drive in and get through the security try to keep the cars together and get spots next to each other. If you want to sort of game it when you're getting directed on a field by the dudes, you can park just slightly more apart and they won't care too much. Just don't be an ass and leave like a car width apart or they'll get mad. But with 4 you'll have plenty of room with even just one spot, unless you have like a boys tent and a girls tent or something silly. I would even recommend just going with one car (unless you have a lot of stuff, which I can't really think of why you'd want or need "a lot" of stuff anyway) to save on gas (if you're traveling far) and hassle getting in.

Can't help it. 2 of us are coming from Texas, the other 2 from NC. Won't even be getting there on the same day.

Guessing we might be hosed in terms of being next to each other in that case.

Definitely. I would say you have like no chance. You can talk to the people directing traffic and see if you can get to one of the outer fields that might fill up last, but they usually have no clue whats going on and aren't helpful. It's not hard to meet up with people though. Hopefully you have a car charger for you phones! I would usually recommend no phones the whole event, but you know you're trying to keep together

If you're lucky though a lot of the time there is a SUPER long line on the shoulder of the highway to get into the campground. Like it takes hours to get in off the highway. If you're only a few hours apart you could be chilling in that line when they get there and they could sort of squeeze in next to you (although thats sort of frowned upon).

Oh you're not even getting there the same day? Yeah no chance.

But yeah at the end of the day I wouldn't say it's that big of a deal. If you're in your tents for any reason other than sleep or sex, and not spending the rest of the time at shows, you're doing bonnaroo wrong.
