Videogamer.com review. 8/10

"It takes a couple of hours to uncover it, but there's actually a game hiding in here too, and it's a pretty good one. So good, in fact, that all that non-gamey stuff starts to become a hell of a lot more fun once it pops up. When you're not having your eyeballs torn out by some of the most incredible scenes of unfathomable madness ever put on screen, chances are you'll be smacking seven shades of Shinto out of the Gohma, the red-tinged ancient enemy of the people of Gaea.
...
Good or bad, game or no game, you've just got to play Asura's Wrath. And, in truth, that probably says it all."

Pretty hyped for this one. It's been a long time since I've sat down in front of a home console and really just enjoyed a fun, crazy game.

The amount of loading screens does seem like it'll be the more annoying issue for me. But still looks like a blast.

Hey did you guys hear about the new DLC? It's real interactive 2D anime.

If you're morally opposed to DLC, don't worry, you can just mash square rapidly while you watch an AMV on youtube.

Also, this.

I was pretty surprised (read: saddened) by the active rejection of gameplay.

I loved Bayonetta and would be thrilled if we ever get another game in that genre with similar quality, but I also appreciate that other games are produced trying to do new/different things, even if they're less adapted to my tastes.
There is no real problem of game quality on this generation, but on game diversity. So I think that Asura's Wrath is probably fine as it is, even if I would have enjoyed it more if it were a Bayonetta clone.

This game is great for people who always wanted to play Bayonetta/DMC but couldn't due to the difficulty barrier.

Unfortunately for Cyber Connect/Capcom I don't think that audience is a huge amount of people.

But it sure is wacky!

Asura’s Wrath could have been very disappointing – in fact, in some ways it is. There isn’t any exploring, anything to collect or any upgrades and it’s all very scripted and beyond linear. Those are things we’d expect from a normal game though, and Asura’s Wrath shows that it’s anything but that. To put it simply, Wrath will leave you in awe with the incredible enormity of it all. It’s a good story with a brilliant setting, and everything is in working order.

It’s by no means a brilliant game, but it is a good piece of interactive fiction and a new approach, which we’ll happily welcome with open arms. Six of them.

This is a game in only the loosest sense of the word, but is an intriguing proposition nonetheless, especially for those with a penchant for action based manga series. Asura’s Wrath is an original, engaging and occasionally ridiculous game and as a result is certainly a novel experience, though whether it’s an experience that most gamers will be happy paying top dollar for is another matter.

In Short: A wonderfully imaginative and beautifully presented interactive anime, but one that cannot maintain a regular enough supply of surprises to justify even its short running time.

Pros: Incredible presentation and some of the best cut scenes and boss battles in all gaming. Superb art design and the combat has a great sense of violent contact.

Cons: The two best episodes have already been extensively previewed and demoed. Very short, with almost no replayability. Shallow gameplay and plot.

Score: 7/10

I totally agree with this, and I thought I would really hate it based on the demo, but after playing it I found myself kind of enjoying it. There is gameplay, It's basically Naruto ult ninja storm 2. Most of the episodes seem to run for more like ten minutes rather than twenty, so For a full priced new release purchase no way, but it makes a good rental. Especially if you enjoy the type of anime its emulating.

For some reason I thought this game was dropping next week.

Knowing this is a fully interactive anime now, I'd be willing to play through the game once just to say I did. It would be the perfect game to play the next time I'm sick, when I don't have the wherewithal to concentrate on a more taxing game like Ninja Gaiden, but I'm not unconscious enough to have bad television on while I'm dozing off on the couch, either. The demo and other preview video gave me the impression that it's ideal shōnen escapism.

Asura’s Wrath isn’t as brainless as it may want you to believe. The ridiculous moments and likable characters kept me smiling, which was odd, considering it’s essentially a story about misery. It’s a nice change of pace from other hack-and-slash games, featuring an interesting story that’s not blocked off by insurmountable difficulty.

Just got up to the part past the demo. This is REALLY fun so far, I also love the music that plays in the inbetween episode art segments.

The actual combat is pretty simplistic but there's already more of it than I expected. You do get to pick easy/normal/hard and I'm on Hard right now.

Yup! Only on the difficult level you've completed though (I only played on hard so for example I couldn't do ACT 2: Episode 12 on easy without replaying the game on easy).

OK. I've watched a full walkthrough of the game, withl only the final boss and ending scene to go.

I now understand why this game is getting average reviews when on the surface it is an awful game.

The setting, plot, character progression and narrative are simply amazing, even viewed purely as a cgi movie. It actually really does blow some of the most established story focused games out the water.

Not only that, it is true there is SOME game in there, im not sure you would call it an action game in the same vein of DMC and its ilk, but it is there. Nothing fantastic, but serviceable.

Honestly, the problem with Asuras wrath is not with what it is itself, but rather how it was marketed. This would a perfect "game" for a staggered episodic release over several months over the online services and if you ever watch the game you get the feeling that may have been the original plan.

I am conflicted. As a game i still am slightly insulted and offended that capcom expects me to pay $60 for this...something, when i wanted another character focused action game.

that said, i cant shake the feeling that something really worthwhile is to be found with it and this is the first and only time watching a youtube playthrough of a videogame has had me so involved and engrossed.

watch someone play it though, rent it over a weekend or buy it at a reduced price. Its a worthwhile "experience" to be had, although i hesitate to call it a good or even average videogame, least in the purest sense of how I define such a thing.

I feel the same way. It has that whole "just one more episode" aspect of it. I'm getting ready to tackle 13 in a bit.

To be honest, I haven't been this immediately entertained by a game in a fairly long time. When I grabbed it earlier today on the 360, I was pretty excited. With the mix of the on rails shooting, melee action and QTEs, I'm pretty much in a personal, multigenre heaven. The combat is also fairly solid. Once you get in the groove and know the rules of battle, you can do some fun things.

As far as complaints go, they're extremely subjective. The first issue being that the dodge and lock on buttons are mapped to the bumpers. I would just prefer them to be mappable to the triggers. The other is about the frame rate. At times, the game still has some serious "slide show" scenes. It can be jarring at times. Otherwise, the game runs at a fairly steady 30fps more often than not.

Well, the episode select menu has been looping for a bit now. Off to kill some gods.

I agree totally. You are also right about the price killing it, this game should have been a 1200 point arcade release (its development budget would prohibit this of course). I can't see many people replaying it and after paying full price for the game its hard not to feel ripped off. Its easy to see a lot of work went into this game but if it did have a deeper fighting system for the gameplay sections, like Dmc, it would be a far more worthwhile proposition. This will be coming to a bargain bins soon, thats when it will be worth picking up.

I did the "one more episode" till like 15 or 16 I think.

The game is so bananas.

I really hated one level (playing on hard), I think it was episode...15 or 14. Where You're falling through the sky as Yasha. Those fireballs the fish kept firing (not the ones you throw back) I couldn't dodge them and eventually just got killed by them. :(

I need to let my brain process what in the world just happened.

Also, totally got the "View of the Valley" trophy. As I should have. And I totally want some of those art pieces in the interludes.

The "Denied" one was perfect with the achivement popup. Trophies always seem to pop later which sucks for how this was timed RIGHT when Augus punches you in the face when you try to grab one of the girls.

Same with "Heads will Roll" right when Asura blows up the fleet in episode 12. Busted out laughing with both.
