Someone obviously missed 5 years of the entire industry fanboying up the 360 and insisting the Wii was "just a fad". It only seems calm now because we're at the cusp of a new generation and most people's energy is going towards speculation nowadays. Once the WiiU, PS4, and XBox3 are all on the market (or at least fully revealed) the flame wars will start up again. And the 3DS vs Vita has just gotten started, not to mention the Everything else vs. iOS war that's ignorant journalists/analysts keep trying to throw fuel on.

"LOL THE XBOXORZ SUX" read the declaration of war, signed by the European Union yesterday evening. "ONLY XTARDS WOULD PLAY ON DAT STUPIT SYSTEM BLURAY MAKES GAMES BETTUR"

The USA was quick to defend its honor, declaring war upon the Europeans for their heinous allegations against their system of choice.

"SHUT UR MOUTH U FILTHY PS3RS" responded the USA on the popular video game forum, Gamespot's System Wars. "UR BUYIN A CONSOLE THAT HAS ZERO GAMEZ AND THEIR ALL UGLIEZ"

The European Union struck the first blow of the Flame Wars today, attacking the country's west side in a stunning blow against the Redmond area, headquarters of Microsoft and the makers of the Xbox 360. Seventeen bombers flew over the city, laying waste to the factory of the monolithic company. Further reports indicate that the Xbox team has were moved to safer locations before the attack and will be contained until fears have dissipated. The Zune team was lost to the attack.

"Right now," said the United States on System Wars, "nothing, not even the safety of our citizens, is more important than defending our video game console."

Other countries around the world declared their allegiance. Russia has joined the United States on the side of the Xbox, as has India and Canada. Japan, most of South America, and most of Asia have all joined on the side of the Playstation 3. China and Mexico have developed their own faction based around the Nintendo Wii. Australia didn't join any faction, instead saying "PC's are the best, you guys, and you're all a bunch of consoletards."

"We hate nothing more than the PlayStation 3," said the United States. "It leaks malice and hatred. It's smug, good-game-less arrogance is nothing more than a posh, stupid grin on Sony's evil face. It is our duty, as Americans, to purge the world of their corrupting influence."

The PS3 coalition responded "WHTVR LOSER DONT CRY WHEN UR 360 GETS RROD LOL ROFL"

We will continue to offer coverage as the situation unfolds.
I came in this thread not expecting much, but this was actually funny, thank you.

And related to the thread, my feeling is that as long there there is chauvinism there will always be people(I hope I am talking mostly about teenagers here) to apply the "philosophy" to any other cause, even one as stupid video game consoles.

I could swear the enthusiasm has greatly diminished compared to the zeal we had from the 90s up to 2002 between Sony, Sega, and Nintendo. Nintendo doesn't compete anymore (they just sell a ton of units) and the differences between the 360 and PS3 turned out to be, in a word, boring.

Apple is as off topic as flash games are on this forum, so I didn't feel like qualifying it.

It gets me thinking.. of course we know about Sony/Nintendo fanboyism, and Xbox fanboyism has been kind of quiet...

But actually, a good generation of humanity has now grown up with Xbox doing quite well. To many it is their normal, standard, home console. I think we have a lot of unconscious fanboyism that will only be expressed if Microsoft's kind of "easy success" in the marketplace is challenged.

For example, let's say that a future Xbox has its "Gamecube", "PS3" or "Saturn" moment where it becomes kind of marginalized compared to its prior success... well, I think you'll find a lot of kids today who'll find that challenging and uncomfortable, and they'll cling to a kind of defensive fanboyism around what they know.

Well that is true. I do imagine some people out there are Xbox fanatics.

I seem to remember a lot of atrocity when the Xbox 360 launched, and was destroyed by the Wii. Of course it never compared to the months following the PS3 launch, but honestly, manufacturer loyalty seems so weird.

I just vouch for the system which has the best games. I absolutely hated everything Xbox last gen, but the Xbox 360 came to be my favorite system this gen. Prior to that, I preferred the PS2. Even before that, I liked the Saturn the most, and before that the SNES.

I didn't try for it but at the moment I own all 3 consoles, and a gaming pc. The reason I don't play certain of the consoles is because I don't buy good games for them, and the reason I play on the pc mostly is because I'm always using it and because the games are on the HDD as if they were PSN/XBLA games.

I think we need better figure heads for next gen if the drums of war are to be beat.

Which brings me to another point, does anyone else miss the British guys that used to speak at E3?

Phil Harrison - Sony
Peter Moore - Microsoft

Now we have that dweeb at MS and the nervous guy with Sony. I just don't feel it. On top of them before, we also had guys like Krazy Ken stirring shit. What made it even better at the start of this gen was one console had sold 100+ million whilst the others were around 20 million. That lead to over cocky CEOs and fanboys which adds fuel to the war. Like you said OP, since all consoles have sold well, I can't see any of the companies making wild statements.

We'll never ever see a head of Sony/MS/Nintendo say something like "People need to get 2nd jobs for this console", which is a shame. They'll be there for sure but I doubt we'll ever see anything like this gen again.

It has only been dying down as we're so late in the generation that there are no game-changers left.

When Wii-U, PS4 and Xbox 720 are all out, I'm sure we'll see the same old tired arguments back again for a new era.

Evidence I feel, that franchise and hardware fanaticism is possibly bolder than ever, especially where platform exclusives are concerned.

-The staunch defenses of the indefensible have been insane this generation. Hoards of enthusiasts have leapt into the fray to defend RROD, Sony remotely lobotomising functionality in their customers privately-owned property, Bethesda conning millions out of their customers by willfully selling them broken games, Nintendo's unnecessary region-locking of the 3DS and various other anti-consumer acts. More than every, I think some fans are ready to defend whatever abhorrent decisions are made by their "team".

-The collective denial exhibited towards the beginning of the generation was incredible in certain communities. Desperate to somehow exclude registering the Wii's success, we had various attempts to disqualify it from the generation. "Wii is a fad"; "it doesn't count, its last gen" and other bizarre flights of fancy were pretty commonplace in parts of the internet.

So yeah, I don't see any signs that the flames of fanboyism are going anywhere. The "console warriors" are still out there, and they'll be with the industry as long as there are individual platforms and exclusives.
And once again Mama Robotnik sums it up nicely.

The intensity waxes and wanes but the highs are VERY high.

That's not fanboyism though, that's rational preference. A fanboy is someone who has an irrational allegiance.

It's even possible (although so unlikely to be highly improbable) that someone could actually only like the software library on one system. It doesn't innately make that person a fanboy.

Fanboy war, fanboy war never changes. Since the dawn of human kind, when our ancestors first discovered the killing power of rock and bone, blood has been spilled in the name of everything: from Sega to Nintendo to simple, psychotic rage. In the year 2077, after millennia of armed fanboy conflict, the destructive nature of man could sustain itself no longer. The world was plunged into an abyss of nuclear fire and radiation. But it was not, as some had predicted, the end of the world. Instead, the applecalypse was simply the prologue to another bloody chapter of fanboy history.
