Someone obviously missed 5 years of the entire industry fanboying up the 360 and insisting the Wii was "just a fad". It only seems calm now because we're at the cusp of a new generation and most people's energy is going towards speculation nowadays. Once the WiiU, PS4, and XBox3 are all on the market (or at least fully revealed) the flame wars will start up again. And the 3DS vs Vita has just gotten started, not to mention the Everything else vs. iOS war that's ignorant journalists/analysts keep trying to throw fuel on.

It will never die. Just look at the number of unjustified, poorly veiled potshots at various groups in this thread alone.

And related to the thread, my feeling is that as long there there is chauvinism there will always be people(I hope I am talking mostly about teenagers here) to apply the "philosophy" to any other cause, even one as stupid video game consoles.

I stopped taking sides about these things when I finished college and got a job. Now that I look back on it, I used to be such a douche about the whole console/HD format "wars". Truly, it was a waste of time.

As long as there are multiple consoles, people will always feel the need to convince themselves that the one(s) they have are best, and the one(s) they don't have suck.

Console wars are so boring since the generation has lasted so long. What hasn't been said? What hasn't been done?

This gen has been running pretty long, so things have died down considerably. Things ought to get back to full speed after this E3, with the new console announcements.

If fans exist, there will be wars. The team names may change over the years but fanboy wars will always exist in some form or another.

I could swear the enthusiasm has greatly diminished compared to the zeal we had from the 90s up to 2002 between Sony, Sega, and Nintendo. Nintendo doesn't compete anymore (they just sell a ton of units) and the differences between the 360 and PS3 turned out to be, in a word, boring.

I think as long as Sony and to a lesser degree, Nintendo, are still making hardware there will absolutely be fanboy wars.
Apple is as off topic as flash games are on this forum, so I didn't feel like qualifying it. |

See, owning all three consoles does not diminish preference. People seem to think this.

But actually, a good generation of humanity has now grown up with Xbox doing quite well. To many it is their normal, standard, home console. I think we have a lot of unconscious fanboyism that will only be expressed if Microsoft's kind of "easy success" in the marketplace is challenged. For example, let's say that a future Xbox has its "Gamecube", "PS3" or "Saturn" moment where it becomes kind of marginalized compared to its prior success... well, I think you'll find a lot of kids today who'll find that challenging and uncomfortable, and they'll cling to a kind of defensive fanboyism around what they know. |

I seem to remember a lot of atrocity when the Xbox 360 launched, and was destroyed by the Wii. Of course it never compared to the months following the PS3 launch, but honestly, manufacturer loyalty seems so weird. I just vouch for the system which has the best games. I absolutely hated everything Xbox last gen, but the Xbox 360 came to be my favorite system this gen. Prior to that, I preferred the PS2. Even before that, I liked the Saturn the most, and before that the SNES. |

I didn't try for it but at the moment I own all 3 consoles, and a gaming pc. The reason I don't play certain of the consoles is because I don't buy good games for them, and the reason I play on the pc mostly is because I'm always using it and because the games are on the HDD as if they were PSN/XBLA games.

Eh, it's just too early and too light on details for a comparison between future platforms to start dividing people up into their respective camps. Just wait until more concrete tech news and software announcements hit later in the year and into next.

When you see how some people can argue about petty things like console wars you realize that there will never be eternal peace around the world because human nature is human nature.
It will never die out. |

I think we need better figure heads for next gen if the drums of war are to be beat.
Which brings me to another point, does anyone else miss the British guys that used to speak at E3? Phil Harrison - Sony Peter Moore - Microsoft Now we have that dweeb at MS and the nervous guy with Sony. I just don't feel it. On top of them before, we also had guys like Krazy Ken stirring shit. What made it even better at the start of this gen was one console had sold 100+ million whilst the others were around 20 million. That lead to over cocky CEOs and fanboys which adds fuel to the war. Like you said OP, since all consoles have sold well, I can't see any of the companies making wild statements. We'll never ever see a head of Sony/MS/Nintendo say something like "People need to get 2nd jobs for this console", which is a shame. They'll be there for sure but I doubt we'll ever see anything like this gen again. |

I will always be partial towards Nintendo unless they go completely batshit crazy and start developing inferior games, but surely I'm not the raging nerd I was during the Megadrive/Snes era
there will always be fanboys unless Nintendo merges with Sony |

It has only been dying down as we're so late in the generation that there are no game-changers left.
When Wii-U, PS4 and Xbox 720 are all out, I'm sure we'll see the same old tired arguments back again for a new era. |

everyone always has a preference of product, and they will defend their preference vehemently. especially on the internet. me personally i like ps3 more, but the 360 was still the one i bought first because it had the software i wanted.

It's even possible (although so unlikely to be highly improbable) that someone could actually only like the software library on one system. It doesn't innately make that person a fanboy. |

Fanboy war, fanboy war never changes. Since the dawn of human kind, when our ancestors first discovered the killing power of rock and bone, blood has been spilled in the name of everything: from Sega to Nintendo to simple, psychotic rage. In the year 2077, after millennia of armed fanboy conflict, the destructive nature of man could sustain itself no longer. The world was plunged into an abyss of nuclear fire and radiation. But it was not, as some had predicted, the end of the world. Instead, the applecalypse was simply the prologue to another bloody chapter of fanboy history.

Look at this article in Wikipedia.
This thing is more complex and deep than you think, not just games have it,it will never die unless there is one product that everyone will buy which is impossible. |
