I could swear the enthusiasm has greatly diminished compared to the zeal we had from the 90s up to 2002 between Sony, Sega, and Nintendo. Nintendo doesn't compete anymore (they just sell a ton of units) and the differences between the 360 and PS3 turned out to be, in a word, boring.

For example, let's say that a future Xbox has its "Gamecube", "PS3" or "Saturn" moment where it becomes kind of marginalized compared to its prior success... well, I think you'll find a lot of kids today who'll find that challenging and uncomfortable, and they'll cling to a kind of defensive fanboyism around what they know.

Well that is true. I do imagine some people out there are Xbox fanatics.

I seem to remember a lot of atrocity when the Xbox 360 launched, and was destroyed by the Wii. Of course it never compared to the months following the PS3 launch, but honestly, manufacturer loyalty seems so weird.

I just vouch for the system which has the best games. I absolutely hated everything Xbox last gen, but the Xbox 360 came to be my favorite system this gen. Prior to that, I preferred the PS2. Even before that, I liked the Saturn the most, and before that the SNES.

I didn't try for it but at the moment I own all 3 consoles, and a gaming pc. The reason I don't play certain of the consoles is because I don't buy good games for them, and the reason I play on the pc mostly is because I'm always using it and because the games are on the HDD as if they were PSN/XBLA games.

What made it even better at the start of this gen was one console had sold 100+ million whilst the others were around 20 million. That lead to over cocky CEOs and fanboys which adds fuel to the war. Like you said OP, since all consoles have sold well, I can't see any of the companies making wild statements.

We'll never ever see a head of Sony/MS/Nintendo say something like "People need to get 2nd jobs for this console", which is a shame. They'll be there for sure but I doubt we'll ever see anything like this gen again.

In my experience, the flames of fanboy fanaticism have been brighter this generation than ever before. -Recall the insane fanatical reactions to certain reviewers scoring of Twilight Princess and Uncharted III, from a group of enthusiasts that hadn't even played the games. Evidence I feel, that franchise and hardware fanaticism is possibly bolder than ever, especially where platform exclusives are concerned. -The staunch defenses of the indefensible have been insane this generation. Hoards of enthusiasts have leapt into the fray to defend RROD, Sony remotely lobotomising functionality in their customers privately-owned property, Bethesda conning millions out of their customers by willfully selling them broken games, Nintendo's unnecessary region-locking of the 3DS and various other anti-consumer acts. More than every, I think some fans are ready to defend whatever abhorrent decisions are made by their "team". -The collective denial exhibited towards the beginning of the generation was incredible in certain communities. Desperate to somehow exclude registering the Wii's success, we had various attempts to disqualify it from the generation. "Wii is a fad"; "it doesn't count, its last gen" and other bizarre flights of fancy were pretty commonplace in parts of the internet. So yeah, I don't see any signs that the flames of fanboyism are going anywhere. The "console warriors" are still out there, and they'll be with the industry as long as there are individual platforms and exclusives.

That's not fanboyism though, that's rational preference. A fanboy is someone who has an irrational allegiance.

It's even possible (although so unlikely to be highly improbable) that someone could actually only like the software library on one system. It doesn't innately make that person a fanboy.
