I hope somebody puts a video up of this talk afterwards.

the one time it isn't a boring load of rubbish with demos that don't work and nobody is streaming it.

Thanks!

Wow, Schmidt is nothing if not ambitious.

Edit: That question about when Android will be on feature phones was hilarious. His response was the great part, why would you buy a feature phone? Then bringing up that with Moore's law, smartphones will be the price of feature phones within the next year.

Just said that their fiber tech (like in Kansas City progam) supports 300-500 mbit sustained speeds. With that speed, holographic technology is possible, he said. YES ALL OVER MY FACE.

There is plenty, he just gave the speeds of Google fiber, and I fuck near wet my pants. Some of the questions arent that good though. But still, its a Q&A , so the PR talk is pretty much dead.

Damn, question from an Iranian journalist on why the Android Market is blocked in their country. Schmidt looked at a lawyer and asked if they could lift the block and the answer is no. It's impacted by US sanctions and can't be lifted.

Does it seem to anyone else that Schmidt seems to be one of the top visionaries of our time? I mean, God knows if half of this stuff will actually happen, but Google seems to have huge plans for the future, and the money to put behind it.

I was surprised the guy stuck with the question after that. Not sure what he was expecting..... There isn't anything they can do if the law won't allow it.

I'm wondering if there was a language barrier there.. He may have not understood how serious violating US sanctions would be. It is crazy how sanctions impact not only physical goods imported to a sanctioned country, but also digital goods. But I suppose it's the transfer of money that is the issue.

Edit: So a lot of his talk seems to be in terms of getting fiber technology around the world, and even to the "unconnected" 5 billion. That access to the internet and technology will bring significant improvements to their societies. And that fiber is essentially free as far as throughput, so there's no limit as to what TV channels, apps, games, etc that could flow through it.

Holy shit, "The good thing about these devices is that they have an off button, you can choose to use them or not." They're not making you do anything. In other words, we're making these things available, it's up to you to decide whether it's right or not by you using it or not.

Best Buy CEO wants to sell more unlocked phones

Quote:
Speaking in a keynote session at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona today, Best Buy CEO Brian Dunn identified challenges that were facing retailers in this connected lifestyle. Dunn identified three key areas for improvement for making the connected world more accesible and all three of them fall directly on the carriers:
Significant up-charge for a device that connects to the mobile internet
Plans that are expensive and hard to understand
Too many “locked” devices (devices that are “locked” to a given carrier), causing Best Buy to carry more SKUs and ultimately complicating the supply chain

Dunn said: ”We strongly believe in the notion of a Connected World, one in which people are able to access their information, entertainment, services and human networks – whenever and wherever they want.”

I can't believe how much the system sucks for buying phones in the USA. The carriers insist on their own models and lock everything up tight.

In the UK it's all Gsm and if you want to unlock your phone to use on another carrier it's easy. Or just buy an unlocked OEM.

Feel sorry for you yanks.

The smartphone won Laptop Magazine’s Best Budget Smartphone, with Laptop Magazine writing:

Though the Lumia 610 will be marketed at budget-conscious consumers, Nokia didn’t skimp on this Windows Phone’s style or software. Available with a stunning metallic-edged black, cyan, red or white bezel, this handset (189 Euros unsubsidized) looks sexier than ,any high-end superphones. Even with just 256MB of RAM and a lower-end 800-MHz processor, the Lumia 610 provides smooth performance when navigating through Windows Phone 7.5 and using Nokia’s suite of innovative applications. It’s also the first phone to come bundled with Nokia Transport, a new app that helps you plan a route using public transportation rather than a car.

The smartphone won an even bigger accolade from Tom’s Hardware, winning their Best in Show award.

QWERTY smartphones are hanging on by a thread man. AFAIK there were none shown. The only QWERTY smartphone line that I know that is still alive is the Droid line. And thats probably just coasting along on tradition.

It must suck to prefer hardware keyboards these days, the industry dropped them like a rock.
