I just got the new iPad today and I've been playing with it. This is my first real mobile computer ever (I have never needed a laptop and still don't). It's essentially a big gadget for me to play with. So far I'm really enjoying it. The dictation really makes posting on NeoGAF a breeze! I don't really see myself carrying it around places, though. It's not quite as convenient as my iPhone which easily fits in my pocket. Still, it's great for browsing NeoGAF and for viewing YouTube videos while sitting on my couch. I find myself watching a lot of streaming video on it especially. Anyway, I'm going to give it a couple of weeks to see if I feel it's really worth owning. Don't get me wrong, it's amazing. I'm just not sure if it's $500 amazing. So far, I think it may be.

I use iA Writer and ByWord, personally.

I tried iA writer after all the great reviews and the awesome icon. Sadly it was a load of garbage. Really ugly interface and zero options. I know it's about simplicity but at least let us change the awful font. The focus mode is pretty shitty too.

Bought ByWord yesterday and it's a lot better. Folder support would be nice but the interface shits on iA writer.

edit: sucks how I can't get a new line on Notepad on my computer. Everything is put on the same line no matter the formatting on the app

I don't think this is earth shattering or anything, but I do think SOME kind of keyboard is a necessity if the iPad is literaly the only computing device you plan to use day to day. Not because you can't use the software keyboard...but because I can't type long posts on GAF as quickly as I'd like without one.

This is basically a "type on GAF more" tool.
iPad is your only computer now? Good luck on that. It's clearly the future you are living out. Obviously people will be able to use tablets as their only computer the way many use laptops
but for me while I can use iPad 80% of the time I still gotta go back to my MBP that other 20%. I can't wait for when iPad can take over that last part, probably won't be long. A revision or two and a few more iOS upgrades and I'll be there. Each year the list of what I still need a traditional computer for thst a tablet cant accomplish dwindles.

The one thing I think android tablets do better is the lock on keyboards with extra batteries in them that can double battery life. I really hope Apple does that for iPad 4. They make an iPad keyboard already so I don't see what is holding them back on that and with the endless keyboard attachments from third parties the demand is obviously there for an official apple solution.

So I had a go of an ipad for the first time today, at a supermarket display. Lovely crisp display and very smooth animations. Very impressive. I can easily see why a lot of people not into the whole tech/computer thing (eg old people) are getting these.

The no flash thing seems a bit rubbish, though. If you spend £400 on one of these and aren't very tech-savvy, you don't want to go to the bbc news site and see "you don't have the right player for this, click here to download" where a video should be, you just want it to work, I'm sure.

I'm not too worried about the lack of flash. HTML 5 will make up for lost animations and interactions, and besides, with the way iPads are outselling conventional laptops content owners will be catering to Apple devices.

That isn't a problem. Like 90% of flash sites use HTML5 when accessed from a mobile deice.

lol no the porn sites seem good with HTML5, porn is always at the tech forefront it seems

My issue is with live streaming, mainly of MMA events.. UFC's website is all flash only for all their live streaming stuff, they show prelim fights on ther Facebook page which is flash only and lots of other streamed MMA events use shit like flowplayer which is flash only. Also, live streaming sports sites are almost always flash only too.

How is the osx version of byword?

And how is copy/pasting the byword content into a word file or whatever?

I use ai writer right now - mostly cause I need to have access to the same document on both iPad and my Mac air but I don't love it. I also can't send out the documents I create to clients in some weird markdown file format so I always have to paste it into word or pages and it always comes over as a mess.

I'm totally willing to jump ship if it fixes my main complaints.

To be completely honest, no. Desktop GAF does make better use of space when in landscape orientation, but desktop GAF just isn't finger friendly enough. Also, the font is way too small. I think it is too small for the desktop, to be honest. I may tinker with ways of making the mobile site more iPad friendly, though.

I personally like desktop Gaf better on the iPad. I would like the mobile interface better if you had the option of putting the page navigation and new reply stuff at the top and also if you could keep the menu button open between pages

In terms of quality of the magazines themselves, probably Retro Gamer and Edge. If you look at the reviews though you'll see that the apps have some problems. Unfortunately afaik very few magazines take advantage of the medium properly or even provide just a jank-free version of the print mag (happy to hear about any standouts though -- New Yorker after the recent update is great, for example).

Also bothers me that I'm a long-time subscriber to both and my sub doesn't carry over to digital like it does for New Yorker and others. At least give me a discount. :/

Your beefs with the full site are the same as mine: Not finger friendly and small font. But I hate the way the mobile site looks on the iPad. It's just so... Blank. It looks great on a small screen but it's too sterile for a big screen. The spacing between a user name and the quote button is ridiculous looking.

Do you still need to go to iCloud.com or whatever for pages to see the files?

That is (was?) my #1 complaint and why I branched out and looked for a different solution. The way ia writer handles documents and iCloud is exactly how I wish pages worked

A vote for Mr. Reader from me. The twee name is possibly its weakest point, it just does everything so well in my opinion, although a 'nice UI' is obviously a subjective thing. More functional than beautiful perhaps, but the per-feed full text reading options (Instapaper/Pocket style) work really well.

Really needs a 'lite' version or something, I'm sure many a GR addict would try it and feel no need to look any further. Really well suited to plowing through feeds quickly, lots of clever little touches and features - I recommend checking out the features list on its webpage.

This and my iPad are now my preferred means to catch up on news, and I spend far more time with it than I do with Google Reader in a browser nowadays.

Though it's probably not necessary, I'd like to echo this. I have gone from having a Google Reader tab open at all times on my PC to exclusively using Reeder on iPad. Combined with Readability, it's perfect.
