The Hunger Games (Dir. Gary Ross) |OT| May The Odds Be Ever In Your Favor #1

Welcome to the 74th Annual Hunger Games

Every year in the ruins of what was once North America, the evil Capitol of the nation of Panem forces each of its twelve districts to send a teenage boy and girl to compete in the Hunger Games. A twisted punishment for a past uprising and an ongoing government intimidation tactic, The Hunger Games are a nationally televised event in which "Tributes" must fight with one another until one survivor remains.

Pitted against highly-trained Tributes who have prepared for these Games their entire lives, Katniss is forced to rely upon her sharp instincts as well as the mentorship of drunken former victor Haymitch Abernathy. If she's ever to return home to District 12, Katniss must make impossible choices in the arena that weigh survival against humanity and life against love.

The Hunger Games is directed by Gary Ross, with a screenplay by Gary Ross and Suzanne Collins and Billy Ray, and produced by Nina Jacobson's Color Force in tandem with producer Jon Kilik. Suzanne Collins' best-selling novel, the first in a trilogy published by Scholastic that has over 23.5 million copies in print in the United States alone, has developed a massive global following. It has spent more than 160 consecutive weeks/more than three consecutive years to date on The New York Times bestseller list since its publication in September 2008, and has also appeared consistently on USA Today and Publishers Weekly bestseller lists.

Jennifer Lawrence (Katniss Everdeen), Josh Hutcherson (Peeta Mellark), Elizabeth Banks (Effie Trinket), Liam Hemsworth (Gale Hawthorne), Woody Harrelson (Haymitch Abernathy), Lenny Kravitz (Cinna), Amandla Stenberg (Rue), Alexander Ludwig (Cato), Isabelle Fuhrman (Clove), Wes Bentley (Seneca Crane) and Donald Sutherland (President Snow)

Tributes are the individuals who are selected (via lottery) to participate in Hunger Games. Some individuals can choose to nominate him/herself in place of another elected tribute. There are 12 districts in Panem and from each district 2 individuals, one boy and one girl, are usually selected to participate in each Hunger Games. Here are the tributes for the 74th Annual Hunger Games:

To be honest, the casting are not exactly who I had in mind for the characters. Katniss, Peeta, Gale, and even Cinna are completely not who I imagine they'd be. But oh well, let's see if the casting director was right or wrong.

Anyway, please tag all spoilers/discussion about the book. Happy Hunger Games! May the odds be ever in your favor, etc, etc!

Someone who knows the books can spoil me via PM or something: how long does Clove survive? I want to see the Orphan girl, but I'm guessing she's a very minor character without much face time.

For YA literature, yes. Good message, well written, reads briskly... yeah it's good. They can be a bit soapy, but the other stuff works well.

This is one of those movies that I'm kind of ashamed to be semi-looking forward to. The books are entertaining, guilty pleasure stuff for me, though nothing mind blowing. I will probably have to see a late showing of this at a local theater that doesn't let kids under 16 in after 9. I'm honestly not expecting much out of it, so if it's halfway decent then it's a win.

I'm curious about the series now. I might have to read it. Movie looks wicked, and Jennifer Lawrence makes it an easy sell for me.

We had to make a display for this at my store. We're talking stacks of the books and other promo stuff.

Agreed. The books are very political but I have a very strong feeling this is going to be more about the love triangle that was only touched on here and thee throughout the series.

I enjoyed the first book. It was actually the first I read on the kindle and blew right through it. As I was reading it I couldn't help thinking that it would make a good movie, and here it is.

Still have to read the other though. I think they're free with the kindle lending library too.

The first one is pretty great considering the target audience but it goes downhill FAST from there. Still I have my doubts about the movie as they seem to try to cater to the Twilight-crowd by playing up the love triangle/romance which wasn't really that big of a plot point in the book.

Yeah, I can definitely see the books being pretty good, but knowing what kind of things these big budget hollywood "event" films usually go for just makes it impossible to work up enthusiasm for this. You know it was fucking focus grouped to death and watered down in the process.

There is some good talent behind the movie and according to the wiki page of the film, Collins herself wrote the screenplay so thats a plus. Steven Soderbeg ( traffic ) served as 2nd unit director. Lawrence can act.

I liked the books so hope this is good if not better.

I enjoyed book one, even if the rest of the books were really a let down After book one, no one does what a real person would do...ever.... Hopefully this will be a good adaptation, though Lenny as Cinna and Woody as Haymitch are making me wonder. (I do like Jennifer Lawrence though, so hopefully she can carry it)

Did you see the film and hate it but read the book after and now like it? Or do you hate the film but think it does a good job of capturing the book after reading it?

I could see that. I think Harrelson looks wise is probably the best known quantity for me. I didn't picture Lenny Kravitz at all in the movie, for his character I pictured someone.. different. Just not him.

Good to hear. Like I said, hoping for an entertaining popcorn flick. Really hoping they don't beef up the teen romance fantasy aspect moreso than it is in the books. There are some great moments in the books, then it degenerates into romance novel fodder occasionally.
