Just finished watching the BBC highlights, some dickhead in the Football OT spoiled the result for me after I asked for no one to post about it (not too unreasonable a request) just in case anyone was going to. Pretty pissed about that but whatever.

Anyway, good race from McLaren that, pleased for Jenson. RBR's quali must've only been a slip-up, Mercedes were disappointing and feel very bad for Williams, deserved those points.

Alonso too, drove the wheels off that Ferrari.

This is true. I'd hate to see what he could do in a truly great car... it would be scary shit. He may be lacking a little of the heart that he's had in previous years, but given the situation with Ferrari, it's understandable. Hopefully he finds it before Malaysia and he can give us a great show.

As I thought, Alonso's almost half a second faster than Kimi. Ferrari is in much better shape than how media is making them look... They're just disappointed they're not fighting at the very top

Kimi thoughts after the race - http://www.lotusf1team.com/Kimi-Raik...we-have-a.html

Excerpts

Quote:
CONGRATULATIONS KIMI, THAT PERFORMANCE MUST MAKE YOU ONE OF THE HEROES OF THE DAY

(Laughs) I don’t know about that, but today went pretty well.
Quote:
The DRS is easier to use in the race than in practice or qualifying because there are only certain places you can activate it, whereas in the other sessions people will try to push the limits of how early they can use it which can easily lead to a mistake if you are too aggressive.
Quote:
YOU CAME ON THE RADIO ASKING THE TEAM ABOUT THE BLUE FLAGS; WHAT HAPPENED THERE?

Nothing at all really, I was just wondering what was going on as they kept showing me the flags but I knew the gap to the leader was nowhere near a whole lap! I assumed it was for the car behind that I’d just overtaken but it seemed to go on for a while, so I was trying to find out why they were still waving at me!
On Malaysia
Quote:
It’ll be hot and humid which is a challenge but we have a good car, so as long as we don’t make the same kind of mistakes again in qualifying I think we have a chance to fight for podiums. We’ll have to wait and see.
Let's hope so.. only 6 days to find out :)

No, he's threatening to do it and requested to sit with Mercs and FiA. So basically if he doesn't get an idea of how it works he'll do it. Few teams are backing him as well.

He might have read it "somebody post" ?

What did he say? did he apologise?

EDIT: and btw, the best way to avoid any spoilers is a media blackout. Just watch the race with a nice drink and stay away from the internet. Even if this guy gets banned/smacked/raped for spoiling it for you. You can't guarantee it won't happen again :)

I've not seen any Sky coverage, but I'm sure you're imagining it. In the short term, the Sky coverage gives the teams yet another platform to get exposure for themselves and their sponsors, so they aren't going to be shunning that.

Plus Sky's increased payment for the coverage means the teams get more money out of it. I can't remember the estimated figure, but I think it was around a million each.

Sure, in a few years if interest in F1 has dramatically reduced, they may well start to have issues with FOM about it, but even then, they still wouldn't shun Sky.

As for the BBC's coverage, my fears have been largely eased. Sure, it's a shame to have only 10 minutes of pre-race coverage, and to nearly entirely cut parc fermé celebrations, but you know what, they aren't worth hundreds of pounds a year.

Going by his edit it looks like he knew rightly what he was doing. He hasn't posted on GAF since, I had a look at his post history lol.

And that is true, I thought if I limited myself to only non-F1 GAF threads and nothing else (no Facebook, Twitter etc.) I'd have been safe.

The irony is had I not mentioned the F1 in that thread it probably wouldn't have been spoiled :\

Definitely unfair, no matter what. Some people are such low lives that actually think it's fun to do stuff like this, but you should be able to ask for such a simple thing without shit like that happening. I'm feeling with you, as I know how I would feel.

Nice feature from ESPN

Driver-by-driver run down

I suggest you rad them all, but here are the ones for this thread :)

Quote:
Jenson Button - 1st

The perfect start to the season was based on the perfect start. While Hamilton lost time in the second phase, Button eased alongside and then proceeded to pull away at an impressive rate from his team-mate. The safety car threatened to ruin his day, but he then displayed the ruthless raw pace that we came to expect from Vettel last year in order to immediately pull out a cushion which he maintained to the flag. Continues to get better with age.

Mark Webber - 4th
The best result of his Formula One career at Melbourne, but it could have been so much better. A very poor getaway was made worse by contact with Hulkenberg, which resulted in the Force India retiring. Having been ninth at the end of lap one Webber showed he had the measure of his team-mate for the first time since Germany last year with some blistering pace, but he was unable to find a way past Hamilton.

Fernando Alonso - 5th
Arguably the drive of the day. The Ferrari was clearly a slow car around Albert Park - with Massa at one point being caught by a Caterham - yet Alonso transcended it thanks to a blistering first lap and some superb racecraft. Never a match for the McLarens or Red Bulls, he held off Maldonado in a quicker car and drove around the F2012's tyre problems to ensure solid points after starting 12th.

Kamui Kobayashi- 6th
Another strong drive as Kobayashi was able to display the pace of the Sauber despite having sustained damage. A broken rear wing endplate didn't help his performance, but Kobayashi remained in the mix throughout and two-stopped to match Raikkonen before showing a cool head to make the most of the last-lap drama and gain an extra two places.

Kimi Raikkonen - 7th
After his error in qualifying, Raikkonen confirmed that he's lost none of his racecraft as he climbed through the field to score points. He ran as high as second before his first stop on lap 20, at one point lapping over a second quicker than the leaders, and will have enjoyed putting a move on Massa into turn one. May have been able to finish higher, but was caught a bit cold by Kobayashi on the restart after the safety car.

Felipe Massa - DNF - Collision
Compared to Ferrari team-mate Fernando Alonso, Massa's performance simply wasn't good enough this weekend. He blamed the balance of his car, but when you consider his team-mate finished best of the rest behind the top four and he was running a lowly 13th before he retired, it's hard to defend his performance. Perhaps most concerning is that Ferrari does not understand the reasons for the poor balance, and there isn't much time to figure out the issue ahead of Malaysia. After a disappointing season in 2011, this is not what Massa needs at the start of a crucial season for his career.

Pretty ominous quote from Whitmarsh (albeit, I'm sure, not without a hint of gamesmanship):

Quote:
"We were more than marginal," revealed Whitmarsh. "Had we raced unfettered we would not have got to the finish line with either car, so from lap eight we were in severe fuel saving mode.

I believe it. McLaren and Button were so confident this weekend; there has to be a reason behind that. They seem like Red Bull were last year.

I don't see McLaren running away with it though. It's only a matter of time before Red Bull improve the car enough, and maybe Mercedes and Lotus will make good on their quali pace.

The whole "vettel can't race" was fanboy bullshit made up to dismiss his speed. The boy is fast and aggressive. Redbull catching up will be a scary sight for the whole grid, again.

Lewis needs a lesson in conduct. His attitude isn't going to make him many friends in the team.

In the unlikely event that anyone's interested, I timed the BBC coverage from lights-out to chequered flag. 70:20. I make that about 23:50 minutes cut from the race; I suspect a big chunk of that would be under the safety car, though.

I have to admit, watching the highlights, it didn't *feel* cut to shreds most of the time; possibly because the commentary always felt continuous, which must be a reasonably impressive editing feat.

We don't need to assume that, we know some countries got a live version of the BBC feed (weren't some of our Canadian members mentioning they had a DC commentary?)

Nevertheless, the commentary we did get sounded continuous.
