A big theme this episode as far as Sally was concerned was her growing up (her trying the fish, Roger's jokes about her drinking, etc). She's at the point where she's looking into the world that these adults are living in, basically at the threshold herself... and then she sees how full of shit it all is. I don't think it's even about the blowjob, that's just a detail. It's about that moment of disillusionment (it wouldn't even be an exaggeration to say 'horror') when you realize that despite all charming and accomplished appearances, they're often concealing something almost sick or insane... that adulthood isn't 'better', it's really just more complex, both good and bad (and especially the bullshit). I think the 'horror' would come more from the cynicism of these people, and the startling lack of integrity, the sexual act is just incidental.

I mean I know that was essentially my most 'traumatic' memory from growing up, it's still vivid enough that I had no difficulty relating to what I assume were her feelings, despite now being a bit cynical myself. For a previously naive person, sensitivity to that sort of thing is pretty acute... it's practically like the king of all disillusionment, or a blow that doesn't really heal.

After seeing the last scene of Meghan in the episode I took that scene to indicate that perhaps this jobs supposed "high points" arent nearly that satisfying to her as it seems to be to others and that the show is going to head into the direction of Meghan being conflicted with her dreams and her love for Don/comfortableness of the life she has at the cost of never being fully satisfied with her accomplishments.

What a great episode. The shot of everyone coming back to the table from their separate experiences at the end was too good.

Great stuff.

The Heinz dinner table pitch must have satisfied all those who were missing the old Don, surely?

This latest episode was so good, i love Mad Men so much.
It's sad that season 5 is already halfway through, hopefully not as much of a gap between seasons this time.

All the French in this episode reminds me of when Roger 'hired' Don in the bar. He says something like "Garçon, je m'appelle Roger, je suis un taxi" which according to my bad French is "Boy, my name is Roger, I am a taxi" right? If so, hilarious.

That's right.

I think the entire point of that was that it wasn't the old Don. That was all Megan. The pitch was her idea, and her idea to tell them over dinner. As Don said, he was just going to yell in their stupid faces.

I liked one thing pointed out in the A.V Club review, that Don got smacked down for not doing his job last episode, and this episode he did pretty much nothing but lie on his couch learning French.

Both very interesting points. Don's business skills this entire season have been terrible. The writers give the character the happiness he longs for, and then they spend the last 6 episodes castrating him in front of the viewer. He finally becomes likeable in the real world, but trades in the characteristics the audience tunes in to watch him for.

I agree. The way she fed him the idea and then carefully prompting him at dinner, Don running with it without missing a beat. And then the lust in the cab after. Great scene.

Don hasn't had a single "Don moment" with a client this entire season. Dude is getting soft and complacent.

Also, I loved that the one guy (can't remember which company he was with) pointed out that none of the people in that ballroom would ever give SCDP their business because of the Lucky Strike letter. I had been pondering the same point for months. How could anyone trust him?

I'm starting to think that the series might end with a dead agency.

Betty is definitely toned down this season due to her actress having a baby

I think Don might start getting even more soft. Actually getting the Heinz account without getting angry at him (and that guy deserved to get shouted at). Then finding out The Letter might have screwed them out of future business. I foresee Old Don gone now :(.

eh, I'm not sure it's his happy marriage that's making Don soft or lose his edge. I think it has more to do with no longer having to hide his Dick Whitman identity. He has job security, a wife who knows his "secret" and doesn't give a shit, and an inflated ego that's pretty much squashed any fear he had of losing it all. I think that fear drove him in the past, but he's become complacent since.

I was actually afraid that Peggy's mom might "accidentally" slip that detail to Abe to try to sabotage their relationship. But I'm starting to think that she's pretty much given up any hope of "saving" Peggy.

I like Glen but the character isn't really doing much at the moment. He's just there for Sally to talk to so her character can be fleshed out. He serves that purpose well, but it feels like a bit of a waste.

It's a credit to the show that I'm sad that I won't get to see Sally and Glen when they're older, though. Usually I wish death upon most child actors.

well yeah that too, she wasn't as happy as she clearly should have been. And like I said it marks the beginning of the end. She'll want to switch jobs, don will flip out, they'll break up, and such is life.

When they both end AMC is so fucked.

Well at least they'll have the TWD ratings beast.
