We are all talking qualitatively about aspects of the movie based on 2:30 of footage, but there are some things that give a more complete impression in that condensed amount of time than others.

If you were saying "The use of CGI looks bad" or "I really dislike the production design", then I would completely disagree, but at least I would understand that you have something to base your statements on. The first third of the trailer is cut to get some semblance of a plot into the minds of the audience, but the vast majority of it is spent on establishing the atmosphere and scope of the visuals.

Conversely if this was a trailer for a Quentin Tarantino movie, you would probably have plenty of content with which to base an opinion on the writing.

Only that the footage shown has an intangible quality that I find so gripping, if just what we've seen was stretched to 2 hours long, I would not be disappointed. I think it has the potential to be far more than that, but I was just establishing my baseline.

Dude it's sci-fi. We know that means every planet is defined by one type environment; the desert planet, the forest planet, the ice planet. Clearly there's a weird alien Giger-esque planet and a normal rocky one. They can't overlap.

We even had a big argument about the globular helmets. I was certain that I wanted the fully spherical glass helmet. In fact, in my research, I read this biography on Steve Jobs’ life and he talks about how he wanted to make his entire office of this glass, which is called Gorilla Glass, and this guy said, “We don’t make it anymore.” So, Steve Jobs actually then re-opened up the factory and started remaking Gorilla Glass. If I’m in 2083 and I’m going into space, why would I design a helmet that has blind spots. What I want is something where I have 360 [vision]. I don't think it's supposed to be the same place. I think it would fit with what the script might be about: basically, when an advanced alien species reaches the location they were "drawn to" by the master race, they get attacked and either wiped out or at least severely harmed, so what the Nostronomos crew found was just another ship wiped out by the aliens "weapon", not the same one we see in this movie. This whole alien race has been taken out by making the same mistake humans are about to make. It's like a virus that spreads to wherever the species in question has managed to space-travel to.

The 'spine' of the original story for Prometheus was a script called 'Alien Harvest' by a writer named Jon Spaihts who wrote an awesome script called Shadow 19. If you can find a PDF of Shadow 19 online I recommend reading it.

Alien Harvest was leaked onto the Internet years ago and was a 'hard sci-fi' tale that told the story of the space jockeys. IIRC it featured some pretty out there concept including (apparently) two captured male humans who the Space Jockeys made have sex with each other which I assume didn't make it to Prometheus.

Obviously FOX was never going to go for that so Lindelof was brought in to rewrite the story into something more palatable. I wouldn't be surprised if what is on screen in Prometheus is Spaihts original concept but heavily rewritten by Lindelof.

Yeah, it could be that there are multiple ships heading for Earth, and they take them all down in this movie. It does seem to imply that "they are going to Earth", as if there was many of them.

So maybe the space jockeys made a weapon (aliens), but since all the humans force the ships to crash, the weapons basically spills out and takes over and kills everything, including the jockeys, hence Alien 1.

But then that makes you wonder if the jockeys themselves are not a dormant weapon of sorts, waiting to be contacted by other species, to then go and wipe them out.

If so, it would leave the door open to another race behind everything.

So, if anything, the position you expressed in that post was actually more extreme than mine (I don't know whether or not the story will suck; right now, I'm annoyed that the trailers seem to contain elements of a stupid rumored synopsis).

The US trailer and its Inception-like fade to black annoyed me, but it looks good, sure. Thing is, my main issue with the current state of science fiction in US movies isn't the quality of the special effects...

The problem with hard (space based) sci-fi is that it's expensive to produce and it doesn't tend to attract a larger audience that would be needed to offset the budget etc.

But if Prometheus is a hit it would be a step in the right direction.
