If the dialogue was any more spliced up in this trailer, we would have only had syllables. Also, lets condemn a script as terrible based on not only a synopsis, but a rumored synopsis. I would certainly hope that a film could be greater than the sum of it's taglines.

I dunno, man, was it really directed at me?
No, by "cheap drama", I mean "cheap drama".

That's you condemning it as something based on a paragraph of story beats.
"OMG MY PANTS ARE GONE THE PRODUCTION VALUES LOOK INSANE" and you saying: "The writing is terrible." Based on a trailer.

I said left by the crew of the Prometheus, not originating from the Prometheus, because we know the warning signal is coming from the derelict spaceship. So perhaps they leave on on board/around that area.

We are all talking qualitatively about aspects of the movie based on 2:30 of footage, but there are some things that give a more complete impression in that condensed amount of time than others.
If you were saying "The use of CGI looks bad" or "I really dislike the production design", then I would completely disagree, but at least I would understand that you have something to base your statements on. The first third of the trailer is cut to get some semblance of a plot into the minds of the audience, but the vast majority of it is spent on establishing the atmosphere and scope of the visuals. Conversely if this was a trailer for a Quentin Tarantino movie, you would probably have plenty of content with which to base an opinion on the writing.

I noticed some differences as well, but the similarities make me think the thing might still be legit, an earlier draft that is still fairly recognizable (unless those particular details were already known back when the thing was first posted, I imagine).

Sorry, I accidentally left out the "In My Humble Opinion" before that. I never said that every aspect of the film including the writing would be a masterclass, based on such a limited sample.
Only that the footage shown has an intangible quality that I find so gripping, if just what we've seen was stretched to 2 hours long, I would not be disappointed. I think it has the potential to be far more than that, but I was just establishing my baseline. |

curious to know if you have read any of the Barsoom novels after enjoying the movie so much.

The UK trailer has far less spoilers than the US one, which when I think about does actually seem to spoil the entire third act of the film, but lacks the 'punch' of the US trailer.
In fact the UK trailer arguably flows better but seems more generic to me. And getting to see more of Fassbender's synthetic is nice too. The blonde hair gives me a really interesting look. |

You mean that this movie might not follow the single biome sci-fi trope of Dagobah, Hoth, Tatooine, etc.? Shocking. Although it IS still grey rocks. They're just shaped a bit different.

Dude it's sci-fi. We know that means every planet is defined by one type environment; the desert planet, the forest planet, the ice planet. Clearly there's a weird alien Giger-esque planet and a normal rocky one. They can't overlap.

Alien Harvest was leaked onto the Internet years ago and was a 'hard sci-fi' tale that told the story of the space jockeys. IIRC it featured some pretty out there concept including (apparently) two captured male humans who the Space Jockeys made have sex with each other which I assume didn't make it to Prometheus. Obviously FOX was never going to go for that so Lindelof was brought in to rewrite the story into something more palatable. I wouldn't be surprised if what is on screen in Prometheus is Spaihts original concept but heavily rewritten by Lindelof. |

So maybe the space jockeys made a weapon (aliens), but since all the humans force the ships to crash, the weapons basically spills out and takes over and kills everything, including the jockeys, hence Alien 1. But then that makes you wonder if the jockeys themselves are not a dormant weapon of sorts, waiting to be contacted by other species, to then go and wipe them out. If so, it would leave the door open to another race behind everything. |

lol i think the reason you guys don't ever like anything is because you always spoil it for yourselves...
i'll be treating this thread like kryptonite and trying to forget everything i saw in the trailer (i was too weak!) |

If the writing or the story suck, is that a "minor quibble"? And aren't you arguing right now that you can't tell based on a couple of trailers? What gives? So, if anything, the position you expressed in that post was actually more extreme than mine (I don't know whether or not the story will suck; right now, I'm annoyed that the trailers seem to contain elements of a stupid rumored synopsis).

I'd really like some "hard SF" movies, someday... Well, just something other than evil alien monsters and lasers instead of bullets, really. What happened to Rama, anyway?

But if Prometheus is a hit it would be a step in the right direction. I'll be honest, I was expecting to find something horrific under that spoiler. |
