Google not policing YouTube comments at all is nearly a society level problem in my opinion...
I mean, it's breeding a sense that it's normal to say certain things or express yourself in ways that are beyond just being rude. I'm the last person to say we need more censorship but if people on Xbox Live said the same sort of things and then were not banned, people would be all over Microsoft's rear end. |

To be honest, I don't believe we're getting all of the information on this.
People don't realise that included in the theory of evolution, as Darwin espoused it, is the idea that the different human races are in fact different species, and that it was considered a process of natural selection (by Darwin) that the negroid species would eventually be killed off by the other species. I am thinking this girl from the video came upon these more sinister aspects of the theory of evolution during home study, or alternatively, the professor could have dropped the information in class himself. Perhaps she did not know how to approach these ideas from a purely intellectual viewpoint and internalised what she perceived to be a natural process that presented a threat to her ethnic group. I'm just saying, there is often more than one viewpoint to any given story. And I blame the professor for not defusing the situation, when he obviously could have, assuming his job title means he has a comprehensive knowledge on the theory of evolution. |

I think she's probably not lying when she says she was upset by the Trayvon Martin murder, and she was probably stewing in anger and connecting everything back to that. She probably had enough of standing still and going about her normal life, so she snapped. All of that is perfectly understandable though not ideal, but what is unforgivable is that after snapping she went on a racist rant about whites and Jews and "sand niggers" and such. That's some suppressed hatred pouring out.

Or she is just fucking crazy, which seems to be the case. You don't verbally and then physically assault people because they aren't the same race as you when they are just sitting next to you. I think it's quite comical that you actually attempt to find reason behind such a hateful tirade. |

Also, having spent more than ten years at various tertiary institutions I know how career academics can get when it comes to actually teaching -- most would much rather be back in their cosy officies, doing research and writing the articles for which they are paid, and which forms the greatest part of their daily functions. I'm African and grew up in a multi-ethnic community. I've known violence, bigotry, hatred, etc. all my life. After a while you can't do anything but develop an interest into the how's and why's of ethnic conflict.

I don't think there's any reason to assume the professor could have averted the situation, nor do I think it's reasonable to expect him to. |

If she has special needs, then she needs to find a program that caters to that. |

What I am trying to say is that there is no conflict. She creates one and then lashes out on innocent people. Or are you not seeing this?

It's okay if we disagree on our individual interpretations of the incident. |

What you call inner conflict, most call crazy. But if you want to justify or put the blame on others for this, so be it. |

You expect the professor to defuse her? It's not his job to try to shut up crazy. The fact that she asked such a dumb question without allowing him to answer it and just kept yelling means she didn't want to hear what he said. |

"At some future period, not very distant as measured by centuries, the civilised races of man will almost certainly exterminate, and replace, the savage races throughout the world. At the same time the anthropomorphous apes, as Professor Schaaffhausen has remarked, will no doubt be exterminated. The break between man and his nearest allies will then be wider, for it will intervene between man in a more civilised state, as we may hope, even than the Caucasian, and some ape as low as a baboon, instead of as now between the negro or Australian and the gorilla (p. 521)." “[t]he chief distinction in the intellectual powers of the two sexes is shown by man’s attaining to a higher eminence, in whatever he takes up, than can woman—whether requiring deep thought, reason, or imagination, or merely the use of the senses and hands.... [T]he average of mental power in man must be above that of woman.... [M]an has ultimately become superior to woman” (pp. 873-874). Direct quotes from Charles Darwin's "The Descent of Man" |

Boerseun said "included in the theory of evolution, as Darwin espoused it, is the idea that different races... etc" So maybe just a poor choice of words, but that might be the point of disagreement here.

I can understand his point on that, but I disagree with him on his other point that the professor is to blame for anything. He's looking at this from the perspective of the crazy girl and only the crazy girl. He also said the girl was obviously emotional and thus the professor shouod have done ore to assauge her, but her emotionality wasn't obvious until after the professor gave his answer. |

I've met some people that have the idea that everyone in the world is racist, but I've never seen someone that actively seeks justification that the WORLD is racist.

Also Boerseun seems to think that teachers should be psychologists, and waste valuable class time catering to a single student at the expense of every single other student. Am I on the mark? |
