Got the email about the back bay store yesterday. To be honest, I really wasn't that surprised when I heard about it but only because it never seemed busy inside. And like someone said, that space must cost a fortune. But it sounds like it might have been a busy store at times listening to you guys. Oh well, Landmark and Cambridgeside are both close by and really easy to get to(and the latter has a taco bell in the mall) and then there's another in Dorchester.

The cause for concern is that this form of retailing has no announced/known way of returning to prominence. This is of course assuming the wizards at Best Buy do not have some magical business plan outside of selling phones. Right now they are sliding along horizontal thanks to moms and dads who are afraid to buy online or don't know any better. Once the generations more accustomed to buying online become a bigger percentage of the market, Best Buy will go the way of CompUSA and Circuit City. It really is only a matter of time. Their business model is antiquated and it does not look like they are really trying to right the ship outside of short term profit seeking.

Was at the only store in my metro area that's getting closed today (not one of the usual ones I go to.)
There's a reason this store is getting closed in particular - oldest Best Buy in the area, shitty layout (more so than your average Best Buy), and just sort of in disarray. The clearance discounts kind of suck too (at the moment). I did pick up ME3 which was on sale for $40 this week though. I may go back when they're in the final days before closing and see if there's any decent pickings left if the discounts start to go 50%+ |

Online retail operations aren't the ones destroying the brick and mortar industry, the lower prices and margins are, you're only going to need how many? Two? Three tvs at most? Big screens used to cost from $2000 all the way up to $10000 for a nice pioneer plasma, plenty of margin and profits to be made, a $500 warranty is nothing compared to the price tag, now all your standard flatscreens TVs are $500 a pop or even less, even if you're making 20% margin it's still a hundred bucks, who's going to pay $200 warranty for a $500 TV? And how many TVs do you have to sell to keep your bills paid? The same thing happened to their computers and laptops division, everything is cheap as fuck and there's no margin in anything. Your store still costs money to run, your staff still needs to get paid.
It's a publicly traded company, anytime you lose investor confidence it can potentially be devastating.

And then the LORD David Bowie saith to his Son, Jonny Depp: 'Go, and spread my image amongst the cosmos. For every living thing is in anguish and only the LIGHT shall give them reprieve.'

I always wondered about the CompUSAs around here, they're tigerdirect stores now and there's so many of them in such a small area down here. How the heck do they make that work? I figured if you were an online site the last thing you'd want is b&m deadweight.

I'd love to see micro center expand into some of the area's that bestbuy will be leaving .We have one in paterson NJ but I wouldn't mind one in Paramus or up by the Wayne Area. The single one we have is horribly busy at night and the weekends.

I'll miss the Back Bay store because it was just nice to have two Best Buys within, like, a ten minute walk of one another in case something was out of stock or whatever. I'll probably make the South Bay store my second choice after Landmark, as it's not really a bad walk from downtown. |

Systemax bought CompUSA for it's brand equity and retail presence. Apparently, it was only a $30 million. As one of the largest retailers in the world (5th largest computer retailer) that was already trying to build up a retail presence anyways, it doesn't seem like it was a terrible investment.

I live on the green line, so I know all about that one, I just hate the mall and dislike that specific store in general — it's always been my last resort BB.

It's funny that they mentioned Target. When Gremlins was first released on Blu-ray a few years ago, it was actually a Target exclusive.
