Got the email about the back bay store yesterday. To be honest, I really wasn't that surprised when I heard about it but only because it never seemed busy inside. And like someone said, that space must cost a fortune. But it sounds like it might have been a busy store at times listening to you guys. Oh well, Landmark and Cambridgeside are both close by and really easy to get to(and the latter has a taco bell in the mall) and then there's another in Dorchester.

Bestbuy fucking blows. Why won't amazon grab some of these companies and create retail stores?

also, I believe they are destroying the retail industry for what it is. :/

The writing is on the wall. Why would Amazon want to buy into a dying market.

I really don't see that as big doom and gloom for Best Buy. only 50 stores our of what? over 1000? Just seems like a small thing, certainly not the Circuit City meltdown.

It has to start somewhere. If certain parties involves panic, it can escalate.

The cause for concern is that this form of retailing has no announced/known way of returning to prominence. This is of course assuming the wizards at Best Buy do not have some magical business plan outside of selling phones. Right now they are sliding along horizontal thanks to moms and dads who are afraid to buy online or don't know any better. Once the generations more accustomed to buying online become a bigger percentage of the market, Best Buy will go the way of CompUSA and Circuit City. It really is only a matter of time. Their business model is antiquated and it does not look like they are really trying to right the ship outside of short term profit seeking.

Was at the only store in my metro area that's getting closed today (not one of the usual ones I go to.)

There's a reason this store is getting closed in particular - oldest Best Buy in the area, shitty layout (more so than your average Best Buy), and just sort of in disarray. The clearance discounts kind of suck too (at the moment). I did pick up ME3 which was on sale for $40 this week though.

I may go back when they're in the final days before closing and see if there's any decent pickings left if the discounts start to go 50%+

Hope the one near me closes soon. Basically anything in that building would make me happier than a Best buy.

That makes no fucking sense, the whole point of online retailing is that you bypass all the overhead costs involved, if you want to get informed on the item, you have to read the features list and feedbacks.

Online retail operations aren't the ones destroying the brick and mortar industry, the lower prices and margins are, you're only going to need how many? Two? Three tvs at most? Big screens used to cost from $2000 all the way up to $10000 for a nice pioneer plasma, plenty of margin and profits to be made, a $500 warranty is nothing compared to the price tag, now all your standard flatscreens TVs are $500 a pop or even less, even if you're making 20% margin it's still a hundred bucks, who's going to pay $200 warranty for a $500 TV? And how many TVs do you have to sell to keep your bills paid? The same thing happened to their computers and laptops division, everything is cheap as fuck and there's no margin in anything. Your store still costs money to run, your staff still needs to get paid.

Would you rather shop at a walmart?

It's a publicly traded company, anytime you lose investor confidence it can potentially be devastating.

Same. Microcenter is also right across the bridge and there is the Best Buy at Landmark like you said. The Landmark store is always really busy, so it's no surprise there. I'll probably go tomorrow and see what they have on sale, may pick up a game if anything..

I always wondered about the CompUSAs around here, they're tigerdirect stores now and there's so many of them in such a small area down here. How the heck do they make that work? I figured if you were an online site the last thing you'd want is b&m deadweight.

I'd love to see micro center expand into some of the area's that bestbuy will be leaving .We have one in paterson NJ but I wouldn't mind one in Paramus or up by the Wayne Area. The single one we have is horribly busy at night and the weekends.

I've lived here my entire life and somehow had never been to MicroCenter until last month (got a $15 coupon from the free stuff thread that prompted me to go). It was an incredible experience. I felt like I was a 12-year-old PC hardware nerd walking into a CompUSA for the first time again. I was also stunned at how busy it was.

I'll miss the Back Bay store because it was just nice to have two Best Buys within, like, a ten minute walk of one another in case something was out of stock or whatever. I'll probably make the South Bay store my second choice after Landmark, as it's not really a bad walk from downtown.

Systemax bought CompUSA for it's brand equity and retail presence. Apparently, it was only a $30 million. As one of the largest retailers in the world (5th largest computer retailer) that was already trying to build up a retail presence anyways, it doesn't seem like it was a terrible investment.

Also you can hop on the green line at Fenway and head up to lechmere. That store has a pretty bad movie selection though so beware. The mall also has a sears, apple store and a tiny GameStop.

I live on the green line, so I know all about that one, I just hate the mall and dislike that specific store in general — it's always been my last resort BB.

Ah. Yeah, south bay has the advantage of not being a mall store so it's got more room and better selection.

User reviews are a complete freaking joke, especially on things like headphones where EVERY pair has at least a few bad reviews. There is no way to get a feel for how good something is online.

I hope they close the one in riverside. they just closed the office depot next to BB so it would be great. it would be like a ghost town around here.

That shit annoys me so much. I've had that happen at Fry's as well but the guys that do that at Best Buy are so much more persistent and annoying in my experience.

I like Best Buy, but I was there a few weeks ago looking for Gremlins and the clerk had never heard of it and told me to try Target.

GREMLINS.

Only use electronics retail stores like Best Buy serve to me anymore is to try out products before I buy online for a cheaper price, or if I need to get something immediately to replace something important that broke.

It's funny that they mentioned Target. When Gremlins was first released on Blu-ray a few years ago, it was actually a Target exclusive.
