Gosling/Refn's next film - Only God Forgives - Gosling's face is fucked up #1

First image (or second? There are others. Anyway, new news new thread).

Sounds (and looks)... pretty brutal.

http://www.aintitcool.com/node/54576

I've spoilered the plot synopsis for those who don't wanna know, but I really enjoyed Drive (really slow first half asides), so I'll check this one out too.

Quote:
The movie is about Gosling's character, Julian, who is a retired hoodlum and kickboxer living in Bangkok, who has to get back into the criminal life when his brother is murdered by Thailand police. Here's a more detailed synopsis if you're wanting spoilers (thanks to SlashFilm):

Bangkok. Ten years ago Julian killed a cop and went on the run. Now he manages a Thai boxing club as a front for a drugs operation. Respected in the criminal underworld, deep inside, he feels empty. When JULIAN’s brother murders a prostitute the police call on retired cop Chang – the Angel of Vengeance. Chang allows the father to kill his daughter’s murderer, then ‘restores order’ by chopping off the man’s right hand. Julian’s mother Jenna – the head of a powerful criminal organization – arrives in Bangkok to collect her son’s body. She dispatches Julian to find his killers and ‘raise hell’. Increasingly obsessed with the Angel of Vengeance, Julian challenges him to a boxing match, hoping that by defeating him he might find spiritual release… but Chang triumphs. A furious Jenna plots revenge and the stage is set for a bloody journey through betrayal and vengeance towards a final confrontation and the possibility of redemption.

Apparently, Gasper Noe is doing some work on this movie too. He did some minor consulting on Drive for the scene where Driver stomps the guy's face in, so he's likely doing more work on that end for this movie.

I have a feeling that Drive was the start of a beautiful working relationship.

Can't wait. Drive was my favourite movie of last year.

rofl I really liked this movie but I definitely had a problem with the real hero song. All I could think about was the elevator bashing. The song is just corny on it's own though.

Here's the first official image:

Also:

- film takes place mostly at nighttime.
- it will be a culmination of his last three films in terms of themes.
- it is said to be more violent than Drive.
- lots of swordplay.

Can't wait!

Sounds like Refn's going into the heart of darkness. I like it. So long as the characters are interesting enough to make the Archer-like scenario work, I'll trust the director to make something at least at the level of Drive.

Funny thing, I think that the guy who wrote that post didn't recognize Gaspar Noe on the picture...

For some reason Americans have this odd obsession with Ryan Gosling & I think all the attention has gone to his head. We all know he's too cool for school but to have a “tea handler”… really? Man can't hold his own cup of tea?

It wasn't. Style over substance only works if the style is ballin', which it wasn't. Hopefully this film has some substance to it. If not, I think I'll be done with this pairing.
