I've spoilered the plot synopsis for those who don't wanna know, but I really enjoyed Drive (really slow first half asides), so I'll check this one out too.

The movie is about Gosling's character, Julian, who is a retired hoodlum and kickboxer living in Bangkok, who has to get back into the criminal life when his brother is murdered by Thailand police. Here's a more detailed synopsis if you're wanting spoilers (thanks to SlashFilm): Bangkok. Ten years ago Julian killed a cop and went on the run. Now he manages a Thai boxing club as a front for a drugs operation. Respected in the criminal underworld, deep inside, he feels empty. When JULIAN’s brother murders a prostitute the police call on retired cop Chang – the Angel of Vengeance. Chang allows the father to kill his daughter’s murderer, then ‘restores order’ by chopping off the man’s right hand. Julian’s mother Jenna – the head of a powerful criminal organization – arrives in Bangkok to collect her son’s body. She dispatches Julian to find his killers and ‘raise hell’. Increasingly obsessed with the Angel of Vengeance, Julian challenges him to a boxing match, hoping that by defeating him he might find spiritual release… but Chang triumphs. Sounds like Refn's going into the heart of darkness. I like it. So long as the characters are interesting enough to make the Archer-like scenario work, I'll trust the director to make something at least at the level of Drive.

It wasn't. Style over substance only works if the style is ballin', which it wasn't. Hopefully this film has some substance to it. If not, I think I'll be done with this pairing.
