In junior high I knew a guy(and his mom) that fell for one of those envelope packing scams. They send you a bunch of empty envelopes, and some made up pamphlets. You stuff the envelopes yourself thinking you get paid for each one you pack.. even though they have machines that do this stuff alot faster and cheaper..

Indeed. At the same time, I have an incredible urge to smack some sense into this guy.
I'd be scared for my own life, if I had a brother like that.

I attracted a lot of attention from these scammers. For example, one claimed to want to hire me to drive him around town on his vacation. I had some fun scam-baiting. Many attempts were made to scam me when I was selling my old PS3, too. (when I correctly predicted slim + price drop)

Since I'm a junior member who can't make threads yet and this thread is about having a degenerate human being for a brother, I might as well tell you guys about mine.
In 2004, my brother started high school. In 2008, my brother was on pace to finish high school - standard 4 years, had a B average. Not Harvard material but still decent. Just needed to pass five more classes, one of which had to be English. Otherwise, he was free to do whatever classes he wanted. 2008 - Enrolls in six classes, fails four of them, drops one. The one he passed was Grade 12 Drama. He got a mark of 27% in English. Hides all the report cards from his parents and spends $400 applying to university to keep up the fraud that he's doing well in school. 2009 - Now needs to pass four more classes, still needs English. Enrolls in five classes, fails all five. His mark in Grade 12 English is 23%. Somehow he gets a lower mark despite taking the class twice. Actually managed to fail Gym. Still applies to university. No idea why. 2010 - Still needs four classes to graduate. Enrolls in 3. Barely passes English - 51%. Fails the other two. This is the final year he is allowed to be in a regular high school. You cannot enroll in a high school if you will turn 21 at some point during the school year in Ontario. My mom decides to make him join the army. He purposely fucks up his application by "forgetting" to fill out his name so the army doesn't accept him. He enrolls in online courses for adults in the summer to make up for his failed courses. 2011 - Remember those online courses I was talking about? He takes an entire year to do them and one of them was English. If you're keeping track, he has taken Grade 12 English four years in a row. Graduates. 2012 - Pretends to be enrolled in a community college for an entire year. Even asks my mom for money for tuition. Is not actually enrolled in college, dropped out after two months as blows the money on gas, eating out and being a piece of shit human being. When parents find out, his compromise is to enroll in online high schoo courses. Again. This is his 8th consecutive year taking high school classes in some form or another. I no longer live close to home so I decided to just cut him out of my life. He's a walking cancer. I'm pretty sure my mom is cutting him out of the inheritance and giving it to me. When that happens, I'll probably give him 20% of the money and tell him to fuck off.

That's the fucked up part. He doesn't drink, doesn't smoke, doesn't do any drugs. He even has a hot girlfriend. His girlfriend is a sweet girl who's working full time and paying her own way through college.
His thing in life is being a fucking degenerate loser. |

All the things you mentioned are just plain old laziness. Lack of motivation. That's not what I think of as a degenerate human being. He's not fucking scamming people with fraud like the person in the OP. He just needs actual psychiatric help. There's something very wrong with you if you didn't put this together before. |

I don't know, man. I think my wife's friend is the dumbest person on the planet when it comes to money.
Twenty nine years old and worked in shitty IHOPs and McDonald's since he was in high school. - Lost his license due to parking tickets and it was gone for 5 years before he finally paid the $700 he owed. - During that time he saved nothing and would spend his 4-500 dollar income tax checks on tickets to Britney Spears for example - found out he has AIDS and quit his job. Then suddenly realized he had no insurance and tried to get his job back, but they wouldn't let him come back because he "tendered his resignation by phone" and frankly I think they were trying to find a legal loophole to prevent a gay man with AIDS from working with food - finally got disability payments and went out and spent the first $2000 on absolute shit, including a $500 GPS when he doesn't have a car and never leaves his little town. - pays half the rent on a three bedroom apt. His sister pays the other half and she has a room and her children have another. The third bedroom? That's where his brother sleeps - his unemployed, broke brother who is 26 years old and puts nothing in the coffers every month. Our friend who pays half of everything sleeps on the couch. - bought his brother's recent girlfriend a $200 swimsuit - note that since Jan 1st of this year the brother has had at least 4 girlfriends and he's only been "dating" her for 2 weeks. He's also fucking his last girlfriend on the side. - is being driven to Ohio to see some family he hasn't seen since he was a kid and who don't know he's gay or has AIDS. He assumes they'll accept him with open arms and let him sleep at their houses, despite the fact that he's only talked to one of them, once, in the last 20 years and that person removed him from Facebook after he came out. He's paying all his fellow traveler's expenses, because they're all unemployed, which includes three of his brothers friends who he just met. He's also buying these friends tickets to some amusement park in Ohio and the tickets are nearly $100 a piece. |

I feel for you man because my brother is prone to doing similarly dumb things. I mean, it's got to the point where when he told me he was doing a charity bike ride I was checking out the charity to make sure everything was legitimate, because it'd be just the think for him to be duped by such a scheme.
And it's genuinely worrying for me, because he's my brother. You just want to help them but they keep shooting themselves in their foot, unwittingly. |

Well, hey y'all. Great news, seems my brother hasn't pulled any stupid shit in the past couple of months, and seems to really been repentant and remorseful about hustling money from my mom, the banks and random strangers. He even finished the semester off with a 3.5 GPA. Things seem to finally be looking up.
Haha, I'm just fucking with ya. He's just as much of a fucking retard as ever. Alas, it turns out that my genius brother went for a NINTH attempt at fraud recently. Get this: He somehow got a hold of my mom's bank account number (some time during his last visit, I'd guess), went online, created an account for her (since she never used online banking), withdrew $300, and used that money to create a joint account with her. So I went to the bank with my mom today to straighten that shit out, and the bank representative made an identity theft report, and said they'll be starting an investigation. But there's one little distinguishing feature about this situation compared to the rest. It seems it won't be ending happily for my dimwit of a sibling. I asked if whoever these people in charge of the investigation will pursue any legal action even if he straightened things out with my mother. The guy's response? "Let me put it this way: I really wouldn't want to be your brother right now. " I'm sure I've mentioned this before in the thread, but really, my brother is the dumbest motherfucker on the planet. He is phenomenally retarded. That wasn't a typo when I said this was the NINTH time he's tried to pull this shit. This is a few months after he got screwed by someone attempting fraud on him, immediately after which he thought he could pull on someone else in return! He's the type of person who will ignore 1,000 people saying it's a bad idea to eat broken glsass, as long as there exists ONE person saying otherwise. He's the dumbass in the movies who pushes the red button that's responsible for launching nuclear missiles or activating the building's self destruct sequence SOLELY because someone told him not to. I fear for what's about to happen to him in the near future. FML. |

This thread started out as me thinking "Man Oblivion's brother must be really naive." But as the thread progressed it looked less and less like his brother seems to be the Gilligan of the family and more and more like a drug addict or someone who owns the mob money. This has become insanely obvious. Nobody tries the same thing this many times. His brother has to be desperate either due to an addiction or really got himself fucked that Oblivion doesn't know about. Dumbasses don't try to get reign checks multiple times, and they especially don't secretly steal from their mother. That's what drug addicts do. And now to me Oblivion seems like the naive one in this situation, not the brother, because he is likely missing something that is incredibly obvious (I.E. a drug addiction, criminal involvement, etc.) Again this no longer sounds like an idiot who is trying to make a quick buck, but someone who is diehard desperate to get money from any source. He isn't Stimpy from" Ren & Stimpy" but likely Harry from "Requiem for a Dream".

Not sure how people are diagnosing GAFer's siblings with everything from depression to drug addiction based on a few stories...

Hey, wait a minute. How can you create an online account if you only have the number of the bank account? I mean the only way I know you can make an online account is to go to the bank, prove your identity and then ask for codes for online banking for your own accounts.
Anyway, this is like the perfect lesson on how to fuck up your life. Sure he must've had some problems with money to begin with, which is acceptable, but instead of being open about it and working towards fixing things he took another route. Let this be a lesson to you all: Kids, easy money doesn't exist. |

When you can correctly diagnose yourself with something as rare as Aspergers, then you can reconize every other condition as well with little to no trouble.

He lives at home. I'm assuming he's being taken care of. Why is he so hard up for money that he's willing to risk being kicked out the house for stealing?

What a coincidence! I happen to be an ABC representative and this sounds like a great idea. Just have your brother wire me $5000 tomorrow to cover start-up costs and I figure we can have this thing up and running in the next week. Hell, he'll be a millionaire six months from now!

He does this shit cause (and this goes to the question of diagnosing him) he's as far as I can tell, almost literally a child in a 21 year old's body. If you met him, at first glance he'd seem like an average young adult. Nothing glaring about any physical or mental problems. But once you start talking to him, you realize he's an extremely immature, naive little dullard. He literally doesn't understand simple things (like creating additional fake checks to pay off a balance you've accrued thanks to PREVIOUS fake checks), he spends a good chunk of whatever money he happens to get, on things like candy and such. I forget if I mentioned it in this thread, but a few weeks ago, he took a chunk of the money he got from financial aid and spent $150 on renting a car that he drove for ONLY THREE HOURS. There was no practical purpose for it. He wasn't using it to practice driving, he didn't need to move anything that required transportation, he just did it BECAUSE HE COULD. This is the type of person my brother is. |

He's at fault for his own actions obviously, especially the stubborn way he repeatedly attempts this stuff... But with regards to the cheques, he couldn't have done that shit in the UK and I think its stupid you can anywhere. You can't access money from a cheque here until it clears, period. Problem solved.
If he lived here though he'd probably be on the hook for 1700% Apr short term loans instead |
