Google unveils augmented reality glasses #1

This is some sci-fi shit right here:

Quote:
A long-rumored Google project, the Project Glass augmented reality glasses were unveiled today by Google on a new Google+ page. The project is specifically from the Google[x], the company's "secret lab" focused on long-term projects. The New York Times's Nick Bilton writes that the prototype glasses that Google showed off look like a "pair of wrap-around glasses with a clear display that sits above the eye," and a clean Google UI is integrated directly over your vision.

They're early prototypes, and Google says, that these are possible designs that show what the interface and design could look like, and the video demonstrates "what it might enable you to do." The demo video shows off a day in the life of a New Yorker moving through the East Village, ending with a rooftop sunset video chat. Overlaid on the narrator's vision are text messages, map directions, calendar reminders, and — of course — Google+ integration.

Developing...

It seems the glasses have moved past the concept phase, though. Speaking to Bilton, someone who has used the glasses said, "They let technology get out of your way. If I want to take a picture I don’t have to reach into my pocket and take out my phone; I just press a button at the top of the glasses and that’s it." In late February, Nick Bilton reported that "Google employees familiar with the project" confirmed the glasses would be available to the public for around $250 to $600 dollars by the end of 2012. At Wired, Steven Levy argues that Project Glass "is very far from public beta," and that an end of year product launch is "extremely unlikely."

Note that these are all early prototypes and not real products right now.

So bad-ass... I could see this kind of stuff being as common as smartphones in about 10-15 years.

If this does come to pass, I hope there's some solution for command input aside from talking to yourself. People with bluetooth headsets are already annoying enough.

Ah yes. That's what I was thinking of. It's hard to keep track. Google had 23 different pranks this year, apparently.

Implantable contact lenses with heads-up displays are the real future. Glasses are an antiquated design and will be gone the way of the Dodo eventually.

While I see a huge market for wearable technology it's not going to be glasses, way too obtrusive. I'll imagine a wristband or something that's easily accessible is going to be a lot better.

Also google is the wrong company to leverage this. The last thing I want is an ad company seeing and observing me constantly, serving up ads when I don't want 'em.

Yeah...no. There's zero percent chance that the actual product will be anywhere near as useful or responsive or accurate as that.

Give it a few years. Great idea, but no way this is ready for primetime.

This the best they could come up with for a concept video for augmented reality? I could think of a hundred life-altering applications of this idea off the top of my head, and the best the could come up with is "checking in" at you favorite food place through google plus? So lame.

Google really is the new Microsoft.
