Magic The Gathering: Duels of the Planeswalkers 2013 Announced (PC, Consoles, iPad!!) #1

http://www.wizards.com/Magic/Magazin...ily/arcana/945

Quote:
Here's why we're excited about this:

iPad: This summer in addition to XBox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC, Duels of the Planeswalkers 2013 is going to be available on iPad!

Planechase: Not only is Wizards of the Coast coming out with four new Planechase decks on June 1 (which introduce the new Phenomenon card type), but you'll be able to play Planechase multiplayer games in Duels of the Planeswalkers 2013!

Optional Manual Tapping of Lands: Although Duels of the Planeswalkers is mostly for people who are new to Magic, it's a lot of fun for people who have been playing Magic long enough to know what's what. So for Duels of the Planeswalkers 2013, you can turn on an option to let you choose exactly which lands to tap!

New Decks; New Challenges: Naturally, a new Duels of the Planeswalkers means new decks to battle with and new puzzles to solve.

Meet the New Boss: The final battle in Duels of the Planeswalkers 2013 is someone you might recognize. Say hello to Magic’s ultimate evil mastermind, dragon Planeswalker Nicol Bolas!
Big news this year is the iPad release and the ability to manually tap your lands. Finally, you can save that Lightning Helix for your opponent's turn and cast your Squadron Hawk without fear of the game using your only Mountain. And no, there won't be a full deck editor. Because they would be silly to do that with Magic Online existing.

shut up and take my money!

i hope they will do a better job with expansion packs releases (i'm looking at you PS3 version)

the only thing i didn't like about 2012 was that there was only one real expansion... i enjoy deck packs, but i want more!

Hopefully they let you at least cross over cards between decks that share the same color. Baby steps. Last year we got the ability to remove cards when adding extras.

yes, that would be awesome... or they could come up with a couple of decks that belong to a same theme and let you move cards amongs them... giving you a pool of about 180 cards to make your deck...

what i really, really want is the ability to take away lands from my deck, i think some of them had way too many and i was forced to put extra cards just to avoid drawing lands every single turn

ps: am i the only one worried about loading times on the ipad version? i mean, it takes forever to boot the game on PS3

They had me at "on iPad"

The Magic clones on there are just the worst. I mean, DotP is another clone really, but it's still pretty damn fun...to a point.

Finally let you tap your own lands. ABOUT FUCKING TIME. I wonder when they'll say what the promo card is?

I hope the online works well on iPad. It'll have to be real time though, because asynchronous Magic would be the worst.

They'll say it is an M13 Titan and then it'll be as if thousands of Magic players cried out at once, and then were silenced.

I remember playing this game when I was a kid. This was like baseball cards to me, I always had to buy packs of these. I'm assuming the game, you have to buy cards? That seems like it'll get expensive.

No, it comes with all the cards you're allowed to use.

Nah, that's Magic Online. This game gives you all of the cards in-game (except for some relatively inexpensive DLC a few months down the road)

:lol That would be insane amounts of trolling. I hope they make all versions get the same. PC getting shafted last time was stupid. I like when it's one rare.

what WanderingWind said.

plus once every couple of months they release a deck pack (2 new decks) for about 2-3 € or an expansion (3 or more decks plus new campaign, plus new puzzles) for about 5 €

This version of it just gives you a bunch of preconstructed decks you can use and edit a little bit by unlocking new cards (by playing the single player). In the past two versions they've released expansion DLC that includes some additional cards for decks and new decks. Since it is technically a beginner level product they don't let you build your own decks.

If you ever wanted to try and play Magic again this is the perfect thing to buy.

They have another product for PC called Magic Online that has most of the cards that exist in the tabletop game, but you have to actually buy packs of cards.

Does Magic have an equivalent to the Yu-Gi-Oh World Championship series? I've always wanted to play more, but I'm not much of a social gamer and I hate games that force pre-constructed decks on you and/or typically require to pay a little bit for each decent card you want/need.

A Magic game on the 3DS that at least includes all of the most recent sets would be awesome. I'm surprised Wizards haven't had one made by now, on the DS at least.

Well, because what you're talking about goes directly against their basic business model. It's a collectible card game, so yeah, they want you to spend money on cards. Duels of the Planeswalkers is the pretty dang close to what you're asking, but this recent announcement is the first time it's been released on a mobile platform.

Maybe in the future...

that would eat on their magic online sales, so i don't think it's ever going to happen...

the reason because yu-gi-oh has that kind of game is probably because a business model like magic online is not feasable for that game...

The existence of Magic Online makes putting out a game like that a financially bad proposition for them unfortunately.

Manual land tapping and Planechase were two of the three features I was expecting, the other being the introduction of Planeswalker cards to the format. Got to save something for the expansion I guess.

I may have terrible luck when it comes to Magic. Sold my 360 and the original Planeswalker comes out for 360 only. Now, most of my casual gaming (like card games) is done on my phone/tablet - bought an Android tablet and they announce this for iPad. And it's not just video games; a week after I got into the physical card game, the Wizards of the Coast shop near my house closed down. Terrible luck.

Not buying unless there is an option to randomize decks in multi-player. Tired of playing against the same 3 decks every time.

One feature that'd be wonderful: let us set up best of 3 (or 5, or whatever) matches in MP and let us sideboard in between games.

I don't think the DotP userbase has the patience for that (or Commander, for that matter) sadly.

Don't rub it in. :(

PS3 instead of 360!
Android instead of iPad!
Pokemon TCG early adopter instead of Magic!

I feel like only one of those was the right choice.

If you mean real cards, then yeah I understand that, but Yu-Gi-Oh sells real cards and Konami still produces games based on it.

Mobile platforms always seem to be my choice when it comes to games like this, largely because the basic card-based strategy suits handhelds more than consoles mainly due to convenience.

I really hope that you can turn the time limit off when playing with friends. In previous versions sometimes its impossible to block if your opponent attacks with lots of cards becuase there simply is not enough time to to select your blockers.

Does anyone remember the old school Duels of the Plainswalker game? I think it was microprose.... but it had an overworld map where you traveled to different locations defeating people and then taking their ante cards and adding them to your collection, best part was the full deck editor letting you build whatever deck you wanted from all of the cards you collected. Still the best MTG game.

It seems like it's now finally become an annual series. I'm not sure how I feel about this. I bought both the original and the 2012 edition when they were on sale on steam. I've logged maybe an hour on each and cannot tell the difference.

I hope there's more to it than just the few bullet points listed in the OP.

Well, the basic rules of the card game aren't changing. New installments just add new decks and perhaps a few new game variants.

The differences will probably just be the new decks, new challenges and modes. Since it is (presumably) only ten bucks I don't have that much of a problem with it. Heck, I'd pay a decent amount just for a bunch of the challenge puzzle things. I enjoy those way too much.

I do look forward to whatever comically broken deck they give to Nicol Bolas. Karn's was already pretty hilarious in 2012.

For $10 you can get Magic Online which has the "planeswalker" set of cards that is almost identical to duels, but lets you build your own decks.

I just hope they don't make Archenemy part of the campaign again. Or at least don't make an achievement for it. Playing that with 2 AIs on your team is an exercise in horrendous frustration. "No Jace, don't use all your mana. He just revealed a Massacre Worm and has the mana to cast it next turn and you have a Counterspell. Nooooo."

I ended up only beating it by having two controllers in my lap to play two hands at once.

Yeah, I think the foil ones could only be unlocked with money. Of course, why anyone would actually pay money for a digital foil effect is beyond me.
