Manual land-tapping is an option that should have been available since the first game, considering how crucial mana management is in MTG. But, I could forgive even big flaws in a first effort. However, I don't see any reason why it took until the third entry to finally get it. It feels like WoTC are intentionally withholding basic MTG features, that have been staples since the game's inception, for use as incentives to purchase their yearly iterations. Last year, they allowed us to remove cards from decks. This year they're going to let us manually tap our lands. Maybe next year, they'll actually allow us to construct a deck from our entire pool of cards.

And like an abused spouse who can't quit his lover, I'll likely keep coming back.

Not sure where I'd rather have this... iPad would be nice but Steam is where the guys I'd play this with are.

I would love that, but they're probably afraid it would eat into sales of the actual, physical cards or the online equivalent. This entire game is meant to serve as a gateway to buying physical decks and expansion packs to get the "full" Magic experience. That's a shame, because this format is pretty slick otherwise.

Yeah I doubt we'll be able to construct full decks from scratch, I agree it would largely render buying cards pointless.

DOTP 2012 was fantastic, still got a load to finish on it. Got me buying a few packs for the artwork. Might actually play properly some day.

It would also drive up the barrier to entry for online play and make balancing a pain. It's fair easier to balance decks against each other than to balance a whole collection of cards.

Didn't stop them in 09 from making Elves Deck Top Tier to the point all other decks were mostly useless if they couldn't stop the Elves quickly (and most couldn't given the lands being tapped with no control screwing you over 9/10 of the time)

Frankly, switching cards out to other decks is all I want. "Full deck editor," basically but fuck it. I want to be able to take cards from one deck and put them in another (see: multi-card deck to mono-color) and have a better playing deck because of it.

I hope the iPad version has fast multiplayer like the pc version!

Can't wait for this. After seeing how perfect the iPad is for stuff like Ascension and Ticket to Ride, it's the version I want most. I'm worried about how the interface would work, though. If my opponent has 30 creature tokens on the field, how cluttered is it going to be and how tough will it be to select one? And how readable are the cards going to be? Zooming on specific cards could get messy with no buttons.

I've got the PSN versions in the past, but I've gotten really annoyed with the sluggish interface, so I might switch to PC this time if the iPad version's a bust.

For what its worth I used to play the PC version of 2012 on my Galaxy Tab with a remote PC app. Worked well enough, was perfectly playable.

I'm hoping the iPad version takes advantage of the retina display though!

I think that would be better as a separate game. Basically MTG Online with DotP's interface.

I do look forward to whatever comically broken deck they give to Nicol Bolas. Karn's was already pretty hilarious in 2012.

the only downside I can see in a tablet version is the fact that the AI takes forever to compute its move in some game modes on console. it may be sluggish on tablets unless they scale it down a bit

Few other details I hadn't seen before: http://www.gatheringmagic.com/gregha...-and-m13-news/

They are adding the end step into the game so you can actually do stuff like save instants till the end of an opponents turn. So now stuff like this won't happen again! And it makes it more like the actual rules of the cards which is always good.

Also, there appear to be 40 cards to unlock per deck which should hopefully allow for a lot of shifting archetypes even within a single deck.

So they added the end step and let you tap your own mana? Wow. We're approaching actual, IRL grown-up Magic here. Last year's version was a big step up from the initial offering so if the same success repeats itself this could end up being really good.

Achievements are out: http://www.xbox360achievements.org/g.../achievements/ so it should be sometime soon.

2012 came out Mid-June so I imagine that would be a fair guess for 2013.

The iPad essentially runs the exact same internal configuration as the Playstation Vita except the vita has twice as many cores.

Would it be safe to assume this will be on the Vita as well?

That seems fine. Most of the time you won't even need to use it.

I didn't really expect them to let you actually manually tap lands whenever and then cast your cards because that would require displaying floating mana and probably having a way to undo it.

yup to me that seemed just fine, honestly I think I prefer something like that instead of full blown having to click my lands to add mana to my pool. The times where the game gets the land wrong isn't all that often, so just having the option to see what it will work well enough, and the fact that I can change it will be a great change from previous entries.

I really wish that they would confirm a release date for this though, so I can know when I am going to lose a ton of time to magic again.

Ten decks but they haven't given concrete lists for them yet. The people over at the official forum for it have started to put together decklists based on what has been seen in videos and screens: http://community.wizards.com/go/foru..._Planeswalkers

Mid June is also my expected release date.

On a different note, I know I recall reading somewhere (on eurogamer I think) that the archenemy mode won't be in 2013 and will just be replaced by planechase instead of having both modes. Has this been confirmed?

Mid June sounds about right. Duels of the Planeswalkers 2012 was June 15 last year and a month before the yearly 2012 expansion of the actual card game.
