The thing I love the most about both games: they're so similar and yet so different. Dark Souls is the perfect sequel because it doesn't try to be better than its prequel, it just tries to be a great, standalone game.

Yep, E3 build. You started inside the portcullis gate, and approached the Red Dragon from the opposite direction you do in the final game.

There was also a bonfire right before the Gargoyles.
