They weren't cheering because they believed that OJ was innocent of killing those two people. They were cheering because, for the first time in American history, a black person got away with murder!

Really? I was pretty young when the case was on television though i never thought of it that way. I was neither happy or upset about the case.

He will be arrested, charged and, hopefully, tried before a jury of his peers, which is all many people wanted in the first place. Myself included.

I am, of course, invested in the end result - I hope he's found guilty - but this is enough to turn down the boiling pot of rage in my chest every time I hear the name "Trayvon Martin" or "George Zimmerman."

Some of the reactions to the OJ Simpson acquittal still baffle me? Not to derail the thread but can anyone break down why there was such a joyous reaction from some?

In the context of the early 90s, after the Rodney King beatings and the LA riots of '92, the LAPD had zero credibility in the black community. It was widely suggested that they were targeting OJ, a popular black celebrity, and had fabricated any evidence linking him to the crime. Therefore, when it turns out that the lead investigator Mark Fuhrman had a history of using racial slurs against blacks, it just cemented this opinion. When he was acquitted, it was widely seen as a victory for blacks against police corruption.

It looks bizarre in retrospect (I think you'll find that most sensible African Americans you meet nowadays will readily admit that he was guilty as hell), but these are the kind of things that happen when your harbor mistrust in the populace over decades.
