Unconventional ways you've done things in games
#1
I guess that at least some of you did stuff like these. Doing stuff earlier than excepted, skipping levels and areas, doing a mission not like it was intended to or something similar.
---- I defeated the second boss of Twilight Princess just with arrows instead of pulling the chains to make him fall. It takes around 25 arrows to kill him with that technique, but it was still kinda fun. In Dragon Quest VIII, I got a certain jewel, the Venus Tear, from the swordsman labyrinth way earlier than intended. Normally, the thief "Red" asks you to get the Venus Tear for you, but at that point I already had it. I was quite surprised that the developers even thought of that, because they added a cutscene for that. In Ocarina of Time, I used the crooked cartridge trick to get out of Kokiri Forest without a sword. I've beaten the whole kid section of this game without using a sword. |

In Super Mario Sunshine, there was some black soup in the harbour and you were asked to move along some platforms/cranes or whatever. I simply used the rocket water pack to get to the star.
Just a different way of doing things: In The Last Story there was a spider. You could either slash on it from the outside, but I got eaten by the spider and killed it from the inside, which was much quicker and easier. |

When I played Ocarina of Time 3D Master Quest, I did the dungeons in a very odd order. Why? Because I wanted the invincibility spell early. Didn't actually need it much, but it was fun. It helps that in Master Quest, a lot of the items are easy to reach in the dungeons, as you get them much earlier than in the normal levels. I think the order I did was Forest, Spirit, Water, Fire, Shadow. Fun fact: Morpha, despite being made of water, is immune to Ice Arrows.
Also, in Prince of Persia: Sands of Time, I fixed a glitch in the game by rewinding time to before it happened and playing on from there. That one REALLY shouldn't have worked, but it did. Have to wonder how the Prince narrated that one. "And then reality broke and I fell through the floor into nothing, but I used the Dagger to recover from it." |

Grinded my way in FVII until I could absorb Beta and beat the Midgar Zolom. Little did I know the thing just keeps respawning and I was supposed to rush through the grass and into the cave entrance. At least that made things piss-easy for a good chunk of the game.

I had so many moments in Far Cry 2, faults aside. For shits and giggles I decided to stack some cars up (like...3 or 4) near an enemy outpost, far enough away that they didn't notice me, and I hid nearby and shot a missile at them. The massive explosion got their attention but the fire that was started combined with the wind blowing in their direction set the whole area on fire and into the outpost. The guys there were losing their shit and a couple were even killed in the fire and I was able to walk right in to the base and get what I needed. I'm pretty sure they never even saw me.

In Sega Superstars (eyetoy PS2), the Crazy Taxi minigame was stupid and noisy : you were supposed to gesticulate and shout to catch the cab's attention. Instead of that, I just held the camera in my hand, shook it around so that it saw motion everywhere, and whistled into the microphone. Perfect score.

Solved a ton of bridge puzzles in portal 2 by blocking lasers with cameras instead of with cubes. Took more aiming of the light bridge to elevate them high enough though.
Also I abused the whole get hit by an enemy to knock yourself onto platforms trick in castlevania a lot. In addition, as a kid I beat Skullman first in Mega Man 4. Not Brightman or Toadman who were by far the easiest. Skullman. |

Get everything I can in a Zelda game before I enter a dungeon.
My best accomplishments (THat are now the norm on most FAQ's) Legend of Zelda NES: Have the blue ring before even entering the first level among other collectibles. Link's adventure: Level up 5 times before beating the first temple. Link to the past: Have 10 heart containers right after entering the dark world. Ocarina of time: 10 heart containers before turning into an adult. (This requires getting the heart in the chest games, which statistically you have a (1/2)^5 chance of winning without the lens of truth. You get the idea.... although Skyward Sword bastardized this concept. DAMN YOU LINEARITY!

I remember there were one or two buoy tokens in Spiderman 2 that couldn't figure out how to reach, so I got side mission enemies to spawn near their locations, lured them to the edge of the island and got them into infinite aerial combos, and, once I got far enough, I just dropped down to the tokens.

Not me, but when my brother plays pokemon games, he just makes the game harder for himself. He'll always be under-leveled, or have a team that doesn't really make sense. It's not that he purposefully does it, he just sort of goes into the game one way, and tries and tries again until he wins.
Yet he still manages to beat the game quicker than me.... |

Two examples from HL2. And while they may be unconventional, both sem to be intended by the design of the areas.
First one I have a video for. Shortcut at Gate 5 in Water Hazard. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJcSSE_oGYw (skip to about 1:10 to see the shortcut) Second one is from a later area in Nova Prospect where you are supposed to hold off guards until Alex arrives. The game gives you three turrets sitting in a section of 4 turret closets. It's not obvious, but it is that way because you can take the 3 turrets out and turn them around (so they are facing out) and put them back in the closets. Leave 1 of the middle of the 4 closets empty for yourself. Climb in and let the turrets do all the work as the combine rush in.

My favorite Oblivion character to date:
- marksmanship - no melee skill - no magic skill - no armor - high agility/acrobatics - high sneak/alchemy - run like hell when in trouble - turn the difficulty level UP What a friggin' adventure! It was filled with some really tense moments, where if I were caught, I was surely dead. Ever since, I've had trouble being entertained when playing as normal, balanced characters. |

Killed the Tower Knight in Demons Souls one my first try by standing at the top of the far right stairs and spamming soul arrow.
Used the gravity gun in HL2, to make a ramp out of a car and some wood to get up to a platform. There was nothing up there. :( Blew up a tank in BFBC2 with C4 thrown from the back of a quad, killing a third of the team and saving the match. Maybe not that unconventional, but man, it was all kinds of cool.

A bow in Demon's/Dark Souls is your key to an infinite amount of unconvential solutions. Best example would be the two bosses in Demon's Souls (That I know of) that you can kill without actually triggering the boss fight.

Man...that's unconventional and fucking impressive! Did you just forget to level up, or just fancy an inhuman challenge? I grinded like a lunatic and still struggled to finish it. Still one of my best gaming accomplishments for me, game is fucking nails.

There was a mission where you had to carry coconuts from a platform to a vacuum, driving back and forth until you had enough points for the jiggy and/or the trophy or the time runs out. After a few tries, I just took the vacuum to the coconuts. |

I beat FF VIII without junctioning anything but Guardian Forces. I did not 'get' junctioning as a game mechanic in any way, the only JRPG's I'd played prior were Phantasy Star 3 and FF VII; both of which played fairly traditionally and the materia mechanic of FF VII was well explained and introduced.
I expected FF VIII to have very similar mechanics and so got in early grinding up levels and completely ignoring drawing anything at all from enemies (save GF's which the game forces you to do). I figured out about 2/3 of the way in enemies were levelling with me, thought it was a bit unfair and kept steaming on through right the way to Ultimecia, where I had to use a shop glitch to get 99 elixirs to spam just so I could hack away at her for 3 hours and finally beat her. Probably explains why I vehemently hate FF VIII. |

The first time I played through Half Life 2 I pulled off something that I thought was kind of silly looking back. There is a section in the game where you have to find a couple of batteries to provide power to open a fence, or something like that. Well I didn't realize this at first so I moved around a bunch of wooden planks and such to create a ramp against the fence. I proceeded to back up in my car and floor it. It took a few tries, but I eventually made it over.

You can shoot at Maneater through the fog gate if you angle it right, and you can shoot at Old King Allant because he will just sit there until you get close enough, but you need a real strong bow to actually kill him this way because each shot will knock him back a bit, which makes you walk closer, which triggers the fight.

Here is another one from Route Kanal. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4d8YwTi2l8Y It's not the way most people would cross the plank, but I believe that by design it is intentional that you can do it. |
