These shots are all spaced several shots apart, but I really enjoyed how they illustrated Kaoru's cousin's idle curiosity without drawing attention to it. A less confident director would have cut to a closeup of her watching him at some point, but here they just leave her unobtrusively small and unfocused within the frame. It's a good decision because his cousin really isn't an important part of this scene, but it's a nice little touch to add some visual fun to the scene and a little bit of characterization for a minor character.

I really did enjoy that whole sequence. I actually didn't notice her head poking up during the first shot, but I did during the scenes where he was actually playing the piano. It works nicely with everything going on around it, and the way the scenes are cut together work for Kaoru's ongoing development. The visuals and music communicate his feelings pretty well, and there are a lot of small little touches that bring it all to life.

Yeah, I noticed that in the scene as well -- I was wondering if they were going to show a reaction shot from her point of view, and when they didn't, I simply put it out of mind, but when you phrase it like this I can see why it was better to not do so.
I liked the repeated shots of him running up and down the stairs as well.

It was rather neat in the sense that the audience(or at least me anyway) is expecting her to come bursting in the room, but it never actually happens. Or at least some sort of close up as you mentioned. In my mind I am thinking, "I've seen this before. She's going to come in and then he will start bumbling around to trying to hide what he is doing, etc etc."

It became a nice extra detail to the scene instead, I like that.

Well, the best way to recommend an anime is to some it up in a neat catchprase or write a whole thread for it. I've already done that for Rose of Versailles, Mushi-Shi, Angel's Egg, Legend of the Galactic Heroes (0 posts, you guys suck), Giant Robo, Patlabor, Kaiji/One Outs, GAINAX and Master Keaton. It tends to be the stuff that I am most passionate about.

Giant Robo was good and I'm glad you recommended it.

Mahjong itself played no real role in the major plot but the game itself might as well have just been people flipping tiles and making up words for all that could come across to me. As such, I had no idea what they were actually doing or what any of the terminology they used meant. While I appreciate the involved response most of it with the names still flies over my head, so it's probably not worth me going too in-depth on, particularly if I'm not watching more of the show.
