NeoGAF Mobile launches
#1
Hey there. We're pleased to announce that NeoGAF's resident webdev guru ckohler has partnered up with us to design a fantastic custom NeoGAF Mobile platform, which is now ready for launch. We decided on a web-based platform instead of OS-specific applications in order to ensure the greatest device compatibility and ease of use. To start using NeoGAF mobile on your smartphone, tablet, or any other compatible mobile web-enabled device, simply point your mobile browser to:
m.neogaf.com NeoGAF Mobile is designed to be fast and lean, but it is also fully featured, with multiquoting, thread subscriptions, and the other features you'd expect from the desktop site, and also includes special options in the Preferences section, including a dark theme and the ability to customize whether photos/avatars/gifs display, to save on bandwidth and load times. NeoGAF Mobile UI Tips: -Use the button on the top right of the page to access the quick menu -The NeoGAF icons on the top left and bottom left of the screen act as a back button -The blue bars on the top and bottom of the page are quick jumps to the bottom of page and top of page respectively. Update 3: Mobile browsers will be automatically redirected to m.neogaf.com from neogaf.com. If you would prefer to stick with the desktop site instead (for example on high resolution tablets), you can disable this redirect by clicking on "Disable Mobile Website" on the bottom of the NeoGAF Mobile home page. You can un-disable this via a link that will subsequently show up for you on the bottom of the page on the desktop site.

Nice! It was kinda bothersome not being able to see both community forums under secondapps.

Fantastic. Layout is similar to the Secondapps thing, but more fully featured (I was kinda wondering why the secondapps wrapper wasn't being updated...) I'll definitely use this.
One criticism: For some reason the login page did not notify me that I had actually logged in and forward me to the main page. I had to back out and manually redirect to the main page to see that I was indeed logged in. iOS 5, if it matters. EDIT: Wow, a "Spoiler" button, heh.

It looks really nice. A tad bit choppier than the old version on my 3GS, but I'll disable images and/or hope for more optimization. Good work, ckohler.
(I wonder if the full site is going to redirect soon. I'd like to follow links without the hassle of editing URLs) |

Not that I actually intend on browsing on it, but the site doesn't work on the Kindle Keyboard browser. Gets the standard "This is mobile only, go to the desktop version". I assure you, this is definitely a mobile device.
You can detect it by searching for the substring "Kindle" in the user-agent field. There are enough different models that I'm not sure if there's any more specific way to detect. |
