LTTP: NyxQuest - Underappreciated and gorgeous platforming on your PC/Wii!
#1
I've had this game in my Steam library for a really long time, but never started it. Today I finally felt like it was a perfect day for platforming, and I'm very happy I did.
NyxQuest is a pretty simple platformer at its core. You play as the angel Nyx, who has befriended Icarus (yep, the greek dude that flew a bit too high). However, one day Icarus sears his wings and falls down to earth, unable to go back up to meet Nyx. So of course she goes down to find him. Personally I love greek mythology, so that's already one thing in the games favor. You use WASD to control Nyx, and you can flap your wings to stay in the air (like Yoshi) or glide with space. But that's not all! You also use your mouse pointer for various tasks, like moving blocks, catching fireballs or zapping those pesky harpies with lightning. This feature is used to great effect in the levels, requiring quite a bit of manual dexterity as you try to maneuver Nyx through obstacles all the while moving around blocks, killing enemies and stopping huge blocks from crushing you with the pointer. Did I mention this game is gorgeous? I'm really glad it didn't stay on Wii, because in 1080p it is simply glorious. The stereotypical "old greek" aesthetic is used to great effect, and the visuals are sparse but extremely crisp and clear. Heat shimmering and depth of field makes the backgrounds come alive, and the excellent, mellow music helps in setting the tone. The level design is very well balanced, introducing new mechanics at a brisk pace and making the obstacles just challenging enough that you'll just have to try "one more time" even if you die over and over. TL;DR: This is a gorgeous, well-designed and unique platformer that deserves all your money. Go get it!

I think it's on iOS too. Edit: yep, I got it during a free "sale" but I couldn't bother playing it on iPad2 after having played it on Wii.
Wii controls the best probably (analog & buttons for movement, pointer for the powers) but it may be the most expensive version. I need to go back to it to find some remaining relics and unlock the secret level still... Very nice aesthetics. Fun game too, not particularly hard but it did escalate toward the end and make you feel like you're using all your skills, multi tasking between moving the character and using the different powers on the level/enemies or yourself. It has some similarities to Lost Winds but that one's kinda more relaxing and easier to play, it doesn't ramp up as above. I'd only like to have seen a bit more story shown. It wouldn't take much, just a few more static images and lines written.

Very good puzzle platformer and very under appreciated. I liked this way more than the Lost Winds games for example.

It turn from a fun platformer with simple yet enjoyable puzzles into a tedious exercises once the shooting elements are introduced in the latter parts of the game.
Nice presentation. Always thought we'd see a heap more of this stuff on Wii. Don't think I'll double dip on the iOS version. |

And of course there are the Lost Winds games too. I don't think there's much else in this vein, plenty other platformers though.

I loved the bonus level (Arcadia?), it was very fun. Bought it on WiiWare when it came out.
Good game, but too short. By the way, fun fact: The game first appeared on WiiWare as Icarian: Kindred Spirits, but they had to change the name because there already was a browser game called Ikariam. |

I didn't really like NyxQuest. It felt pretty endless, very low key, kind of just like malba toast.
But I didn't enter the thread to complain--I entered the thread to ask about Dive: The Medes Island Secret, which is a WiiWare puzzle-exploration-platformer set underwater using the NyxQuest engine. Has anyone played it? Is it any good? Isn't it embarrassing that I have to ask this because it didn't (and probably still doesn't) have a demo? |

Great game, it blows games like Lost Winds and Trine out of the water in terms how far it pushes the concept of controlling a character and a cursor simultaneously in a sidescrolling platformer, and using them in conjunction with each other to pass obstacles.
Was it the eyeball level, by any chance? |

This was a superb game and the controls and level design were superb. Really enjoyed it and hoped that there would have been much more of this standard on Wiiware. I wrote to the development team thanking them for their hard work and for all the effort that had evidently been put into the development. It was a nice touch to get a reply from them thanking me for the kind words.
