For RPGs I start over. It's madness trying to just jump back in and remember the story, quests I was on, mechanics and so on.
I just did this with Dark Souls. Had a 10 hour save file and just said fuck it and started over. I was able to quickly catch up and surpass where I left off though due to remembering the stuff I had done alread. |

I'm in this kinda painful space with Xenoblade where I imported the Euro version, played 15 hours, then sold it in anticipation of the NA version.
It's been long enough that I forget the flow of the game, and I don't really feel ownership of the save (not to mention that I can't play it on my NA copy anyway).... but it hasn't been long enough that it feels fresh again. It's kind of a slog :/ |

I take it on a game by game basis. I try to recall what has happened to that point. I check out the journal/log and if the story and mechanics come back to me, I'll continue where I left off. If I can't remember where I was in the story or I need a complete refresher on the mechanics, I'll restart.
Dragon Age Origins is an example of a game that I came back to but started a completely new character. Red Dead Redemption is an example of a game that I just picked up where I left off months prior. |

I've done that a lot. The last few games I beat on my 360 were situations like that; HL2, BioShock 2, Black Ops campaign...
I don't start over, I just jump back into it and try to relearn everything as I go. For things I forget or need a refresher on, I just read a guide. It was especially a little difficult in BioShock 2 as I was doing a Hard Mode Brass Balls run while also attempting to get all the campaign achievements in one play through. |

I used to restart but I find I'm now just continuing. I like to play through a game in one block of time(2 weeks or a month or whatever) but there are too many games out there to play to spend too much time on one game. Plus the start of games now are often the worst parts with the boring stories & lame tutorials.

Depends on the game and how long I've left it. But most of the time I will restart the game... Even though my annoying habit is getting a good 80 - 90% of the way through and then leaving it (biggest and most recent example being pretty much at the end of Super Mario RPG and then leaving it).

This is an issue for me, if I stop playing a game for a few months when I'm most of the way through I will never go back to it, I can't bring myself to work through the game again and I've never got an interest in just playing the tail end of something.
