Fuck yeah, nice to see someone else remembers that game! Pretty mediocre but for some reason it always had a place in my heart.

Amazing game. Amazing music. Fucking difficult. I've only beaten it once and it's just one of those games where I look back and wonder how in the hell the child-me could accomplish what the near-30 me cannot.

I recently went to my friends house to check out his wii. I was generally impressed. It was larger than I expected though.

Never played the Original, but I also wanted to recommend BM: Overdrive for Wiiware.
It's a prequel story-wise, but also kind of a remake (Music is remixed from the NES version).

Pros:
  • Awesome and totally hilarious manual!
  • auto-map feature
  • save points
  • Nice animations for the tank/character/enemies
  • giant bosses!

Cons:
  • levels are kinda bland and look the same
  • high difficulty (You lose weapon upgrades every time you get hit in the on-foot stages)
  • You will die a few times at the later bosses (and will have to travel through an enemy-infested cave to try again)
  • some caves are just time wasters (Strong enemies inside, but contain no or only unimportant power-ups, which means you lose more than you gain by entering them)
  • some people seem to have trouble with the controls (unfortunately no Classic Controller support)

I beat it 2 times already, each time taking about 12 hours (in-game-clock says differently, but it doesn't count all your failed attempts).
Despite it's flaws, it's still an enjoyable game and satisfied my longing for a Metroid-like game at the time.

This is the first videogame I have memory of playing. It has a very special place in my heart. I really can't play it again because I get really nostalgic about being a little kid and I get sad. :(

It was a great game but the lack of any save or password system really limited my playing time with it. I would play it once or twice a month, get to level 5 and die and couldn't be bothered to go through it all again.

Did they ever end up patching the controls? Finishing that game cramped my hand something fierce with the way the directional-lock for walking worked.

Unfortunately a patch can't really fix the uninspired level design and lack of compelling enemies... :( At least the remixed music was cool.

I really wanted to like Overdrive. It was just so average.

Sadly, no patch was ever released.

And while I agree on the levels looking boring compared to the original Blaster Master, I tried to look past that (knowing of the Wiiware size limitations) and tried to remember games like Metroid 1 or 2. Those levels looked all the same as well, but the games could still be engaging.
But yeah, it could have been so much better ...

I've play it with the Wii wheel, B button was more easier to use.

Really? That tip was included in every NES game that came out at the time (on the Nintendo Power sub card). I'm not sure how you could've avoided it!

Man....Blaster Master was such a good game. Even with rose tinted glasses, I still recognize that that era of excellence is behind us and died after the 16bit era. (for me at least)

I didn't know about this until earlier this year actually. But, in my defense, I only got to play NES at my 'sitters house -- I had a Sega Master System at home.

Blaster Master was a great game though, I'm sure if I played it again today I'd still think it IS an awesome game.

Actually this may be as good a place as any to ask, but I noticed there was actually a Playstation Blaster Master title....I never knew this. Was it any good? I suspect since i've never heard of it that it probably was not, but you never know.

looks ugly as sin, but most 3d games of the time do anyway.

I was a kid when it came out, and the impact of the game was huge upon its release. I believe it was part of the second or third generations of nes titles, so developpers were really finding all the workaround the limited hardware at the time.

For that era, The music was something else and unlike most titles of the same. The fact that you could exit the tank was WTF-awesome; and also the fact that when you went inside a cave or building, the game would switch to another point of view with 'giant' (at the time) sprites. I remember when it came out, I was at this birthday party for a classmate, and he got that game.. We were like 5-6 kids all packed around his small tv, amazed by Blaster Master, simply because it felt so much advanced compared to other titles at the time.

It's certainly a classic!

I wish someone would make a new game that played in a similar style to Blaster Master except making the on foot segments more Zelda-y.

Also, when I was young I totally thought that the frog turned into the tank and felt really conflicted for the main character.

"NO, FRED!

...that's a sweet tank."

My rule is if you can beat the lobster you can beat the game.

I won't say its all downhill from there but its certainly one of the harder fights.

The single most difficult learning curve in the game is dealing with the wall/ceiling upgrades properly.

Once you master that the rest of the game becomes relatively simple.

It was an update for Wii-ware, some in here have said that it's not quite as good, I don't own a Wii myself so I have no been able to check it out. It does look pretty awesome though.

Is there any confirmation that Wii-ware and virtual console stuff will carry over to the Wii-U yet?

lol blasphemy, it's one of the best intros in the NES library imo, especially of course when you consider that awesome theme.

Overdrive was a humongous letdown for many reasons, not the least of which it only ran in 480i. Yes, a 2D Wii game. The original game through an RF switch was higher definition.

The original is one of the finest pieces of crafted gaming ever. I remember leaving my NES on overnight many a time since there was no password or save system.
