The Max Payne 3 TV trailer is one the best/coolest I have ever seen #1

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QPc9LhKA5C4

Saw it last night for the first time, immediatley YT'ed it and since then I haven't gotten Health's "Tears" out of my head nor have I stopped watching it. The way its put together, coupled with the music just blows me the fuck away every. single. time. It's like the first time I'm seeing the trailer for "Heat" or "300". And now I find out Health is doing the soundtrack too which is fucking awesome in its own right. You really gotta hand it to R* and their editing dept and whoever decides what music is gonna play and all that. This shit is perfect.

"Tears" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SL6MY...?v=SL6MY9OO8vI You can download it there too. I think it loops, but who gives a fuck. It's awesome.

I dunno, I found that trailer pretty incoherent. Jumbled. I like trailers that either have their own short narrative, or at least tease the one in the finished product.

Glad you liked the music, though.

Ergh?

I think the music is great, but the trailer itself typifies everything I don't want to see in an advert for the medium. It's just shots of people shooting each other with a few explosions in between. It makes the game look like juvenile wank, which to an extent it might be, but still it mentions nothing of Max's personality or motivations that make the franchise so interesting.

I actually saw the advert the other day whilst watching the Champions League and thought it looked pretty bad, besides the music, like I say.

It sums up my actual feelings on Max Payne 3, to an extent. Unlike Rockstar's other games there's no sandbox to play with, it's just a linear shooter. Hopefully the engine can make it stick for me.

I would've preferred less shooting and more character moments, and to have what shooting there was really showcase the range of animations, but this still works. They can always roll out another ad catered to those aspects of the game.

I think it'd also work to showcase the seamless transition between cut-scenes and game action.

Well, sure. But it's pretty clear the two are on a vastly different scale. Hell, there aren't many games that don't technically have a 'sandbox'. Call of Duty has a 'sandbox'.

To me Rockstar have pioneered a mature approach to narrative this generation, something you could show someone less interested in videogames as an example of something beyond what they're used to.

This advert displayed none of that. It had guns. And explosions. And women dancing.

That advert is a stereotype, and one I wish the industry would actively avoid.

I don't think that's strictly true, there are cuts of him lying sweating on the floor, him taking some kind of drug in his drink, and crouching over a sink, among others all suggestive that he is not entirely stable. The way it's cut heavily alludes to the chaotic nature of his story even perhaps his mental state, and we see him with various styles of suits, haircuts and facial hair suggesting that perhaps he undergoes some sort of transformation on his journey. In terms of the music, it is both mellow and trancelike something very atypical of a trailer for a modern action shooter trailer, which is usually loud and brash, and so the game aims to capture a more mature audience.

or perhaps I'm reading into it too much

I agree although its a pretty damn stylized take on the stereotype.

But its only an issue if this is their only ad. So I figure this one is tailored for a specific audience.

Adverts deliver a message. To me this trailer screams, "You shoot things and they die or explode!". That's obviously not false advertisement but I'd like to think there's much more to the game and it's story than that, considering it's Rockstar.

I don't think anyone without prior knowledge of the series, and possibly even people who played the previous games so many years ago, would arrive at the interpretation you did.

Totally Michael Mann/Tony Scott-esque in its style but I'm fine with that. Hasn't really been attempted, or accomplished in gaming IMO so I like it. The song is great, and sure to make people pay attention to the TV when it comes on.

It's a game which is primarily concerned with shooting people while jumping through the air in slow motion. Truth in advertising if you ask me.
Edit: I also think the ad delivers on the exact level you say it doesn't, Max is shown as tortured and lost, juxtaposed against the images you describe. The trailer sets a tone and mood, plus it has guns.

You're right. They wouldn't. But it would be very hard to sell Max Payne on what is to the mass market, which is what Rockstar go for with all their IPs these days. Having said that, if the game was representative of the trailer then it would keep you entertained for all of five minutes.

There are ways of marketing successfully and truthfully without firing peoples senses through slow motion bullet scenes and big explosions.

Primary example.

I think you've developed this belief because of your preordained knowledge of the franchise and this particular instalment, rather than from the advert itself.

Meh. Gameplay trumps live action any day, even though I do love some live action trailers.

My favorite would be the full We Are ODST ad. It tells its own small story and introduces you to the hell jumpers at the same time. Brilliant.
