It was in highsec space so it's protected by CONCORD ships (AI controlled police). There's just so many organized attackers and ships available that they're able to overcome this. Not just any guild could pull this off.

As much as I loathe the very idea, others find it fascinating. Its really weird. |

Hah, no longer hiding behind NPC corps lol.
However, I don't know for how long they can pull this off. Every hostile action on hi-sec reduces the player security level and once it goes down enough they can't even undock without getting attacked by CONCORD. Specifically if they use smartbombs, they're gonna podkill people and each podkill is (used to be) very costly in security terms. And of course getting your security back up again is a massive timesink. The real story is how all those assets are now permanently locked in Jita. We're talking billions and billions, probably over half of the game's easily tradeable assets are now landlocked. No one is gonna risk moving their shit now so... basically every single tradeable good in the game is gonna at least triple in price while the Jita blockade lasts. |

It's the reason why people remember Ultima Online so fondly. There's more than enough regulated 'themepark' MMOs out there (not saying they're bad, but there's a lot of them). Playing in an actual sandbox, a fully realized player-run universe was a breath of fresh air for me.

But since the cat is out of the bag, everyone is probably avoiding Jita or else just not undocking from the system stations.

Too bad CONCORD it´s invincible, it would be fun to see Jita reduced to ashes. Loved Eve the months I played, but I was too out of the loop and it demands team work to make the most of it which I couldn't allocate on my schedule. There are ways to play solo but it´s not as interesting that way. Not going to sugar coat it, it can be really boring. But at the same time it can't be incredibly exciting. Trying to trade in lowsec or passing through 0.0 to arrive faster to a point gave me a great feeling of danger that I really enjoyed it, even if I knew I was betting my ship on it. I still hope for a new Sandbox MMO that I can play from the beginning. |

Too bad all it will ever be is the chit chat you hear around the web. In my mind I envision a massive space battle of unprecedented proportions, what I get is very boring streams and youtube videos.

It is all one instance, if that is what you mean. But, they have a way of creating clusters of servers. I think Jita is on its own server cluster and that server cluster has a way of handling the load. I am probably not the right guy to explain it as I'm no techie.
edit: I found this article that might help (its a bit old, so maybe the tech has changed since then) http://massively.joystiq.com/2008/09...-server-model/

What are those two giant ships in the middle?
<-- Limited knowledge on Eve. Truth, I tried the trial and felt overwhelmed. Major props to those who wrapped their head around the game. |

A friend of mine gave me a 21 day trial code which I've yet to use. I've looked at a few videos of it on youtube and I'll probably just be perplexed with it all. That said, nothing ventured, nothing gained. Maybe I'll give it a try next time I have a few days off work. |

Any MMO that is designed to make player agency of this type impossible is no MMO.

I love EVE. While still about progression and obtainment, it's fueled by openness and player creativity. The opposite of WoW, a glorified Cow Clicker, a game about extremely linear progression in the name of acquisition.

Oh man, CCP.
Such an awesome team behind this game. edit: update from the failheap, it appears the goons have so far destroyed over 100 billion isk in assets.

... Wait, what ?!
Oh gosh, Goonswarm strikes again... In D&D terms, I don't think I would be mistaken to call them Chaotic Evil. I heard some stories where the line between gaming and real life became really blurry in EvE. The story about Goonswarm's leader, Mittani, if true, disgusts me... Harassment is still harassment, offline and online. What he did (and what others players contributed to) sickens me. |

Anyway, those stories you heard about the blurring of the lines are probably very true. Forum intrusions between alliances and corps aren't uncommon occurrences, not to mention stories of people infiltrating corps and alliances for theft and intel gathering purposes. It's EVE's metagame, and something that makes EVE very unique. :) |
