Might want to not hotlink...and sort out the image size.
Anyway, for my money, the best gaming magazine was the period when Paul Davies was editor of CVG. Started the out of five system, freeplay(awesome arcadish news), and generally better standards everywhere : ![]() Super Play & Official Sega Saturn Magazine were great through their runs, taking great interest in import games: ![]() ![]() And spare a thought for the awesome but short lived Maximum. ![]() None of these magazines assumed their readers were morons either, which was quite refreshing compared to online publications these days.

![]() look at that shit, i wanted every one of those games really, no one else loved Game Players? i was all about Nintendo Power, PSM, some Next Gen and the others, but Chris Slate & co got me to play gems no one else really talked about like Suikoden. it got weird later with Bill Donahue in the letter section, but I still dug it. weird to not see more VG&CE as well as Next Gen, unless i missed em. edited for images! ![]()

![]() ![]() I liked a lot of magazines, mostly British ones and loved the value for money a giant PC Gamer was...but the Australian NMS and PCXl were easily the ones I cared about most. NMS ended up being rebooted and made a shadow of its former self, PCXL - of course, got cancelled. Shame. |

This, by far my favorite (later turned into Official Nintendo Magazine). Quite critical (well back then) for a nintendo mag and also pretty well written. I guess being European it also felt closer to me culturally than the American mags. (I also liked SuperPlay, but NMS felt more...mature?) |

GAMEFAN was that magazine I'd never see except for in airplane terminals, and when it was there, I asked my mom to get it. I loved the huge thick book, pages upon pages of material, itty bitty text so they crammed in a LOT, and the sleek feel of the pages.
Easily the best mag when I could find it. The first mag that tipped me off about Seiken Densetsu 3. |

CVG was the best by far, with really great, funny writers doing honest reviews. Ed Lomas - legend. Then it went all mainstream and started treating its readers like they were little kids after the company got bought out in the late 90's, from what I can recall, and had an almost complete change in staff.
Also, Diehard Gamefan was great. I remember their article backgrounds would consist of just a splatter of screenshots. Edit: Great to see the love for CVG on here, and also for the official Saturn mag. Those guys went nuts over Fighting Vipers and smashing off Candy's armour...ah the good old days.

I collected Nintendo Magazine System from issue 19, it was my only monthly regular, sometimes padded out with odd issues of CVG, N64 magazine, EGDE and EGM if teh covers/bonuses attracted me.
This however was perhaps the greatest issue ever imo, after all the buildup to Ocarina of Time, everything that came out of Spaceworld 1997 was in this one issue (Child Link ffs!!)I nearly creamed my 11 year old self. ![]() EGDE is the only magazine I oft buy now though. |

Ultra Game Players. Largely because of their weird sense of humor and the utterly crazy letters section. I still remember a lot of the memes.

EGM 100th issue was my very first EMG purchase. Ever since then I bought every single EGM mag for years. Those were the good old days, the magazines would be about 300+ pages. Now magazines are more expensive with barely 100 pages.
I remember back before Next Generation magazine went out, they had an issue talking about Microsoft creating a console before it was any announced. I would love to read that article again. Also, I cant remember the name of this magazine, it was supposed to sell for cheap, probably like 3 bucks, and it came with a demo disc inside. They probably came out with for about 4 magazines. I remember the first issue that came out, the demo disc had a video previews of Black & White and Halo. The video of Halo I have yet to see on the net. Anyone know the name of the magazine? |

Easily Gamefan. The problem was finding it.
Followed by PSM. As a comic fan, it was awesome to see some of the hottest artists in that field illustrating covers, and the occasional interior pin-up feature. Even the envelope art section inspired some of the best fanartists to fight for a space in the mag. |

Good to see Sega Saturn Magazine has alreday been mentioned a few times, definatlky my no.1 mag of that era too. Will also add the mag that came before it..
![]() and Mean Machines Sega. Yeah, they're all Sega mags because those were the systems I mainly had, but I have a complete collection of Sega mag and a almost complete Saturn mag collection and they still hold up in the presentation and writing really well. |
