Go Right

I didn't see this epic love letter to 2D games posted. I wasn't really ready for the nostalgia or the (unexpected) emotional impact it made.

Why is this whole thing shot with a shaky camera? It looks horrible.

That sure is a video of game characters walking right.

Sweet, shaky-cam offscreen footage of video games, with music appropriated from a movie to give the whole thing some sort of undeserved emotion.

Fantastic video. Reminds me of the awesome Game Deaths video Boing Boing made awhile back.

Did the person film this of a screen? Or did they use some sort of post processing filter?

It looks gorgeous.

I actually like that.

That said, 90% of this video emotional power comes from the (cleverly chosen) music. Same as with the other "Deaths" video, the GOW commercials or Journey.

I really don't think so. Simply taking some music you like from a film and putting over a collection of platformers doesn't suddenly give it meaning.

I could take a bunch of shooter footage and set it to a song from Schindler's List and call it "Fight for Your Life" and it would be an equally ridiculous and empty video. There's no connection between the footage and music.

The shaky camera I assume, is to represent players who have recorded their own gaming home videos with cameras before capture cards became standard, or even those who still do so. I suppose it's to add a nostalgia feel to it.

Too bad they are using emulators. So amateur.

Saw this on dueling analogs. I'm kind of curious about what all of the games used are, I was surprised to see Dustforce represented.

Check out the other videos on that channel to see a shocking reimagining of Mario 64's story (somebody played Braid), and a Minecraft video about the fragility of life or something.

I love the shaky cam effect. It looks great, especially on the Yoshi's Island shot. Judging by the motion blur on that shot specifically, I'd bet the whole thing was recorded off of emulators and handy-cam'd in post.

Or the closely shaky closed cam video for Mario Galaxy with Sigur Ros

on a related note, both made me cry ='3

Really enjoyed it, thought the handycam was great, made me realise games are an experience that we watch, they are something that happens. Usually I'm too immersed to notice that. Games look cool! Could do with a bit of polish though I think, the ending is a bit abrupt too.

Fun fact, in every 2D metroid game the correct path to go from the start is left. (except metroid 2)

Super Metroid only counts if you ignore the space station at the start of the game.
(where you have to go down and then right first)

But yeah, the video is nice.
For me, it represents the courageous player (character) when he starts playing. Then later, when the game starts to get difficult, they waver, consider to give up or turn back, but in the end manage to persevere and beat the game.

loved this.

slate.com actually wrote an article about it:

Quote:
It’s a brilliant concept, alternately touching and absurd, and sometimes—as when Mario attempts to retreat into his past but finds only an invisible wall behind him—both at once. The execution is also expert. The heroes are filmed in close-up, with just a touch of shaky cam that helps to make even the 8-bit graphics seem cinematic. (The music, taken from the gorgeous score for The Piano, also helps.) The clips come from over 25 years of video games, both iconic (Castlevania, Super Metroid, Sonic the Hedgehog) and forgotten (Gunstar Heroes, The Astyanax, QuackShot). Those nostalgic for those games may be most affected by “Go Right,” but even those who aren’t will grasp the montage’s central theme: When we press forward, we often leave simpler times behind.
