What would make you quit gaming?
#1
I see a lot of posts on how if some companies would were to leave the gaming business, said fans of those companies would quit gaming. I've mostly seen this for Sony and Nintendo. Microsoft seems to be a bit too young to have developed such a loyal fanbase. I could be wrong, however.
Moreover, with all the anti consumer practices on the rise, many have also mentioned quitting gaming if this continues, such as rumors of new consoles that are anti used gaming. Of course, these are still rumors and I don't believe them. Personally, I see gaming much like other media. I won't quit reading books or watching films for example. I would never quit gaming, per se, but I could see myself moving to PC gaming, such as using a Steam box if that ever materializes, if the console holders do end up enforcing these rumored policies.

I'd probably stop playing games if people stopped making games that I wanted to play.

This. If Sony and MS blocks used games next gen, I'm out. Or go exclusively PC (even though you cant sell used pc games either, but that doesn't feel as bad for some reason)

Everything going "free" to play, honestly. It works for some people but I much prefer paying a flat rate and having all the content rather than being bled for every weapon, costume, area, etc.
Bullshit DLC makes me feel the same way, but I have no interest in a f2p future. |

Honestly nothing would. There will always be alternative outlets to find games I want to play.
Let's take the worst possible future. Microsoft wins console war and buys out every gaming company and you have to register the game and pay a monthly fee to even boot up your game. At the same time they've managed to somehow defeat apple. There would still be some open source operating system out there somewhere and there would be someone making games that doesn't treat the customers like shit for it and I'm sure there would be some games I would like on it. Hence I'd still be gaming. Feel free to insert Sony or anyone else in place of Microsoft. Just using them as an example. |

Basically if this happens.
I would not quit gaming, but I would quit console gaming and just invest in a decent PC. Paying for software that I do not actually "own" is painful enough, but paying for hardware that I do not really own...

Pretty much this, given I could afford the games themselves and everything else that's necessary to play new games I want. Even if that weren't the case I'd still play video games because I have a hell of a backlog.

Even if I somehow end up completely alienated by every single game directed at the younger crowd when I'm old, there will still be a massive audience of people my age and a lot of people making games for us.
I mean growing up I've pretty much been forced to live in the baby boomer's world. That's part of what videogames resonate with me; the mass culture side of them is actually directed at people my age unlike, say, television as a whole. There will always be games like the ones we remember. |

I feel much the same way. And there are new companies this generation that are making fantastic games, so I doubt good games are going away any time soon. If they did, I still have entire franchises I've never played anything from, like MegaTen.

Everything being some social or multiplayer experience.
Everything using the F2P model. Nothing but low budget indie games that are more timewasters than any kind of meaningful experience. Motion control being forced into everything, especially the shitty Kinect-style motion that can't play anything of any depth. |
