Anybody remember Freedom Fighters?
#1
Goddamn what a fucking game. Back when third person shooters had balls instead of... giant shoulder-ed space marines killing aliens. Remember when we were playing as plummers-turned-guerrillas in the Big Apple in a non-linear story line that you let you tackle missions at your leisure and objectives within those missions as well? Remember when completing objectives in one mission had impacts on other missions? Like taking out the chopper base meant the enemy couldn't use choppers, or taking out the snipers at the gas station cleared up a path in an adjacent area. Hell, this is the kind of stuff that Mass Effect should have been lifting from when it comes to choice-altering-gameplay and real consequences.
A goddamn third person shooter from ten years ago had more player-consequence than an RPG from this year. What the bloody fuck. Motherfucking Freedom Fighters. ![]() Holy hell, guys, I'm going to go reinstall Freedom Fighters. Too bad the console versions had balls controls (holding down the right stick to aim? WHAT) and the PC version had no multiplayer. Still though, one of the best games of last gen, and still better than most of the shit this gen. Too bad we'll never get Freedom Fighters 2, due to Eidos/Squeenix owning IO and EA (presumably) owning the rights to Freedom Fighters. But then again It'd probably be hyper linear, the squad mechanics would be ripped out and gutted in favor of poor AI-controlled squadmates, there would be a cover system and regenerating health, day one DLC, etc. Maybe Freedom Fighters existing in this purgatory is a good thing. Hell, the two games that come to mind since it's release are Homefront for it's similar premise, and Kane and Lynch for being by the same developer, and... yeah, maybe it's best Freedom Fighters 2 doesn't happen. RIP: We lost ye before we ever knew ye.

One of my favourite games of all time. Loved how the story took place over a long period of time and you saw a lot of change happen to both your HQ and your character. It was probably the last time I felt that disabling the helipad (or doing X before Y to make doing Y easier) ever mattered in any sort of open-ended/non-linear mission game.

If you're a premium member of giantbomb.com (you've probably already seen it if are) you can watch an extremely entertaining play through of the last level of the game. It's probably the only reason I remember this game exists even though I rented it one weekend when it came out.

Dude I totally agree with you, this is one of the best games I have ever played. Especially playing multiplayer with my brother. I remember my cousin reminded us on freedom fighters because he likes the game, and I'm sad that there isn't going to be a sequel.

Yea the game was and still is amazing. I saw it in gamestop when I was there sifting through their bin of unarranged PS2 games. In my quest to find the Onimushas' I happened upon it and reminisced for a second and put it back. I think I may return there and get it for the measly $3 it costs.

I think the allie A.I. is still some of the best in gaming today. I remember telling one to go to a spot. He would stop and take cover, shoot at enemies, then continue on his way. Mind Blown. Other then 'the Halos' I can't think of many games that had/have that good of A.I.

It was really fun. Really one of the view squad based games I was able to get into. The level deisgin, I also remember being great. The scale was very good and well just fighting in a war torn America was pretty cool and kind of new.
Really wanted another one. |

It's not like it matters at this point. I doubt anybody who worked on Freedom Fighters is still even at IO.

I played it on the GameCube but I understand that was the worst version. Is it worth getting one of the other versions?

Lol. No. They were equal. I liked the Game Cube controls more for this game. In the PS2-version you had to hold down R3 to aim. It was awkward as hell. In GC-version you held down L to aim. Much more comfortable.

I remember it had a great music track. Main theme or menu theme or something. And yea, it was a fun game for it's time.

Hell yeah, put me in the "one of the best games of last generation" boat...loved every minute of it, I'm amazed more games didn't mimic that order of operations style of objectives; the ability to, say, blow up a helicopter fueling station and effectively eliminate helicopters in the next level felt so powerful, like you were actually making a difference in the game world instead of following a predetermined string of events. So awesome, this was one of the few series that I desperately wanted to continue...it would still be cool, EA/IO :)
