I have read a few comments here where people would like the main threat to be the zombies. I totally disagree with this, sure they should be very dangerous if you're noticed by them, but other players should always be a bigger threat. Zombies should be there to add pressure on you when you enter a town or city. You should be able to defeat them by closing a door (unless there are too many) or losing them in the woods. Only ever becoming a big threat in numbers, which I think the game does well so far (Other than barricading with doors and losing them is nigh on impossible and hopefully gets fixed)

The main danger should always be other players, like the best zombie films, whether it's the hillbilly rescue party that kills the protagonist in Night of the Living Dead, the Bikers in Dawn of the Dead or the great Captain Rhodes from Day of the Dead. Zombie survival has always been about humanity breaking down and people fucking each other over.

I use a pretty rubbish metaphor that you, the player are like the submarine red october, the zombies are the ocean, a constant danger ready to come flooding in if you fuck up, the other players are like the enemy submarines out to hunt you down.

I need to know if Gabe Newell is actually playing as a bandit or a normal skinned player? It matters, I need to know of the hunter.

I agree with you DeathCubeK, I find the best thing about this game is if your in a city and you spot another play you think twice before straight out shooting as you could end up swarmed.

Goes to show what a fresh idea can do. Team up with the creator and you could have your next big hit on your hands! ;-)

This mod reminds me of when I used to be big on pc gaming before I made the switch to primarily consoles.

Yes, thank you for creating the closest thing I have to my dream zombie apocalypse game.

We don't need a rubbish Hollywood story or stereotyped characters or special infected monsters. Stay true to the zombie genre and keep it as hardcore as possible :)

Think this is the first time a mod has made me want to buy a game. Whenever I get around to buying ARMA II I think I'll have to donate some money to the modders too, only seems fair.

Making my way up to Berezino through the woods, 7 deer stands, several farms and a factory later, still found no weapons, thats 3 days now and no weapons. Tin cans, crossbow bolts and chemlights are that greet me. Someone is surely anticipating where i'm gonna go and stealing all the shit before i get there :(

You where lucky. This is a known bug.

One of the worst things that can happen while entering a crashed helicopter is that your character turns into a boar. Permanently.

The servers get pounded, and there is a master server that goes down sometimes as well. Just exit and try another server, I usually have to try about 5 servers before I can connect successfully.

Helped out a guy attacked by zombies
then got shot at from other direction by two guys.

One said to to the other to shoot me....
they began shooting at me again attracting zombies, they ran away maybe 600 m and got rid of the zombies. Whem they thought they were safe I shot both in the head with my Enfield

Now I am a bandit...

It's an easy fix, they need to offer a PVE server or server options to turn friendly fire off. I have to admit though, I am a "carebear".

I would love to play PVE, especially while trying to figure out the game.

I'm Arcane on the servers - forever friendly...

Yeah I've been in situations where I opt not to shoot back just because I don't want to be a bandit.

One time a survivor threatened to kill me if I didn't give him my gun, but I figured it's easier to find another gun than to regain humanity, so I told him he'd have to kill me for it, at least forcing him one step closer to bandithood.

Before they did this they would need to allow more than one character that was locked to pvp or pve. Else people would go to a pve server, load up on all the good shit and then return to a pvp server armed to the teeth. It could be a real problem.

Then it's basically just "team" deathmatch with zombies, and one team has the advantage (the side that actually wants to kill the other side). It doesn't sound like Rocket wants that to happen either, since it sounds like he wants to make some way for players to be valuable to keep alive instead of just constant PVP killing.

My concern about this is that the boar thing would last forever, and you would never be able to play DayZ again (since apparently the bandit skin lasts across all profiles and deaths and respawns?). I still haven't gotten confirmation one way or another.

That could actually be pretty fun, whether you can just post notes anywhere, or just write one as/after you die and it stays with your body.

You could:

-write warnings to other players (e.g. "Don't trust ________" "Bandits in Elektro")
-set up treasure hunts, (leave a trail of hints/riddles on how to find your stash)
-Make signs to help players navigate/meet up without maps
-Bait(i.e. bandits place a note, and then shoot while players are occupied reading it)
-Etc. (e.g."Tell my wife I love her")

I played for a good 3 hours last night and had a blast. The one thing I think would be awesome would be if large bands of people became legitimately organized. Imagine having a base camp somewhere, full of supplies, and guarded by a few lookouts. While they stand guard, others would head off to forage more supplies for the group, and if they had a vehicle to speed off in, they could do so at an even faster rate.

It would be even better if factions emerged, with each having a large amount of members. When new players join, factions could vie for these new recruits to add to their force, and send escorts to bring them back to their base. New recruits would be relegated to menial tasks (e.g. foraging for supplies) until they earned enough trust, and be assigned to more important tasks (Guard, Driver, Scout). With this being the case, you would not only have to worry about individual bandits, but larger organized forces attacking. Spies could try to infiltrate opposing factions and steal supplies or weaken their defenses and firefights could break out among rival foraging parties. Even more interesting would be seeing how larger groups would hold together, especially when facing tough times. If a player is approached by an stronger rival faction asking him to join them, he has to make a decision of whether to stay loyal to his friends, or betray them for an increased chance of survival. This concept doesn't need any mod updates to work, it just needs a good community to work. And hey, who is to say this won't happen naturally over time, as people realize they have a better chance at surviving together in the long term, rather than going solo and backstabbing each other for short-term relief.

Something else that would be cool for the game would be vaults (or locked up packs if using the same old models), which would require a password/combination/key to open. You could store supplies there without fear of being robbed, and you could create a joint-supply depot with friends by sharing the password with them. Or you could need a key to open it, and you could create and give away as many keys as you want, but whenever you die, bandits can loot the key from your body, so the more keys you spread around, the better the chance that one of the keyholders might be killed and, his key will be used to rob your supplies.

Oh yea, been meaning to ask how the game decided who you are, is it by ip address or your cd key?

After telling my brother a few stories and showing him some of the videos he'd love to try this too but afaik you can't on the same pc? I have another pc here but I'm not sure if it's worth going through the hassle of setting this up if it's decided by ip address.

I was going to ask about this.

Forts/Base Camps would be an awesome feature. It'd also help/push people to work together a bit more (and open the game up to raiding each other for items I guess).

It's worth running through the intro tutorial (either Arma II or OA) to get a feel for all the controls before diving into DayZ.

I saw on some other forums people writing short stories about their experiences in the game and thought it would be a fun thing to do.

I'm useless at anything creative so sorry if this is a bit amateurish, I had to cut a lot out because it got far too long so if it jumps about a bit im sorry.

Feel free to share your own stories.
Quote:
I awoke at dawn on Day Z+3 with the campfire embers still smouldering, I rubbed my hands over them in vain to try and get a little heat into my body having slept under the elements for the third day since waking on the shore.

Rubbing the sleep from my eyes with a grumbling stomach I grabbed my pack, wolfing down the last of the cooked meat I had been saving despite the obvious stench of decay, I decided it would be better to eat it instead of wasting it as I had nothing else left. I reached for the weapon I had found on a corpse days earlier and checked the magazine, 27 bullets left.

I looked up at the dark, gloomy, foreboding sky hoping that it would stay dry until I had found shelter. With the rising sun behind the clouds in my eyes I decided to head east, having no compass or map the sun was the only bearing I had in this, what seemed endless forest.

Stumbling through the forest I tried hard to keep thoughts of food out of my head but my body betrayed me by the constant knotting and grumbling of my stomach, I felt myself getting weaker by the day and if i didn't find food soon, well that didn't bear thinking about. After hours of trudging I spotted movement in the forest, fearing it could be one of them I readied my weapon and creeped slowly forward.

Rounding the tree I was overcome with joy at the sight of a goat, I was amazed that the animal was still alive after seeing so many ravaged corpses in my travels, I raised my weapon and squeezed the trigger, I felt guilt at taking the animals life but I rationalised it in my head that the animal wouldn't last long, either by my hand or the teeth of one of them.... taking out my knife I hesitantly plunged it into the animals carcass trying very hard to suppress my instinct to throw up, I couldn't afford to lose any fluids.

After having spent the next few hours cooking the meat and satisfying my hunger, I once again set off in search of rescue or civilisation, I would even make do with a nice dry place to sleep. As I went over the hill I spotted a fence, at last I thought, picking up speed I raced to the fence to see an airfield sprawling out in front of me, finding a gap in the fence I made my way cautiously to the air tower.

As I got nearer the stench of decay was heavy in the air and I could hear the buzzing of flies, then i spotted him, a corpse not long dead. I fought the urge to run fearing that they would be near the smell getting heavier the closer I got, I was surprised that I could see no obvious bite marks and no blood until I turned him over and saw two gunshot wounds. Great I thought not only do I have to dodge 'them' I also have to worry about survivors too?!

The person was worse off than I was, he only had a crossbow and two bolts so I left the weapon and opened his pack, I was overjoyed at the sight of tins of food, a water bottle, some painkillers and a watch.

Having taken what I needed I decided to explore the air tower but having explore the building it had been picked clean, maybe by the person who killed the poor survivor outside. I made my way back out and spotted movement off to my right, I hit the ground and crawled behind the fence surrounding the air tower, I held my breath as the survivor got closer and closer fearing that he was the one that made the corpse next to me.

Then he disappeared so I took a chance and started to crawl away, after what seemed like an eternity I reached the aircraft hanger and cursing under my breath I stood up and set off into a sprint, my lungs burning I daren't stop or look around and made my way to the treeline. After regaining my breath I once again set off east and after a few minutes I spotted the outline of a building in the distance, picking up the pace I emerged out of the trees into a burst of sunlight, my eyes adjusting I saw that the building was a supermarket, in the middle of a small town.

Checking my weapon again I decided to risk entering the town to see if it hadn't been picked clean, I cautiously crept towards the supermarket checking left and right my heart pounding I hear the telltale groan of one of 'them' my blood froze, I felt that the risk was worth the reward so I made my way as quiet as I could into the supermarket, peering around the door frames I couldn't see any of ‘them’.

The supermarket was a mess, all the shelves were empty, the windows were smashed, the doors hanging off their hinges, I scavenged what I could from what was left when i lent against a shelf it came crashing down, the sound was deafening in the silence......I heard a scream.

I ran towards the store room to try and go back the way I came when I saw the shadows and heard the footsteps, I switched my weapon to automatic and aimed it at the doorway, ignoring the fact that I only had 1 magazine I squeezed the trigger as soon as the first zombie appeared in the doorway and it dropped to the ground just as another zombie appeared, I squeezed the trigger again the zombie toppling over his friend, estimating i only had half a clip left more and more zombies appeared, quarter of a clip left, I started to panic zombies still coming, then I heard a click click click....

I dropped the weapon and ran back into the store with the intention of leaving by the front door not noticing a zombie had flanked around and grabbed me from behind sinking his teeth into my neck, I managed to shake out of his grip, turned and aimed my pistol at the center of his head pulling the trigger seeing his head disintegrate, the zombie fell on top of me knocking me over.

I led on the ground blood gushing from my wound, having no medical supplies I tried to stem the flow of blood but it poured out between my fingers.

With what would be my last act I pulled my radio out hoping there would be at least a bit of power left, I hit the broadcast button and gave out my location, warning people about the zombies and telling them where my supplies where, I dropped the radio and contemplated my fate hoping that if anyone heard my broadcast and found my corpse would fare better than I ever did..........

Are there any videos out there of players who have hoarded a lot of stuff and been able to survive on one character for a long time? It would be interesting to see.

I really don't like the flowery prose people put into the stories. I guess it's something cynical and broken in my brain. When a 3 foot drop into shallow water makes me pass out for a minute, or trying to take ammo out of my backpack makes all of my ammo vanish, I don't come up with a story for it, I'm just like "eh that sucks". :P

If I have time tonight I will try to play. Do GAF people play exclusively on EU hardcore servers now?

It's fairly easy to survive for long periods as long as you keep away from coastal areas and known hotspots like airports. Zombies are hardly a threat if you are even somewhat cautious.

lol, I did wonder, but just stating the facts was a bit boring, it seemed popular on other forums.

Can someone explain the coordinates next to people's names in chat to me? I always see things like 1-4-A, but I'm not exactly sure how to read that.

I bought ArmA II and installed DayZ.

I'll try to catch you guys on Mumble! Really seems like a mod that greatly benefits from having a bunch of friends to work with
