The problem with Marty isn't Marty, it's perception. He's fallen a good deal from his pinnacle, but at his peak, he was god tier, and his peak lasted for what seemed like 15 years.
Going from GOAT-level to pretty good is a huge drop, sure, but he's still pretty good. Let's not act like he's a bad goaltender now. He's also certainly not a great one. He's capable of vintage dominant games, but the number of mistakes or poor plays has risen to downgrade him a good deal. His mistakes jump out based on what people remember of Marty at his absolute best. |

Yeah, that goal was all his fault, nothing to do with the terrible line change that left him with no one in front of him to defend the Jersey rush apart from that pylon Lilja.
And missing their best rookie for most of the game. |
