Photos of off-the-grid North Americans
#1
I'm sure there are a number of people on GAF that have fantasized about vanishing into this sort of lifestyle. There's something romantic about it, I've always felt.
I wish the photographer would have included more information, such as where in north America these groups are, but the photos are fascinating nonetheless. http://www.ericvalli.com/index.php?/.../off-the-grid/ A few favorites:

This is my dads dream. I love the outdoors myself, fishing, camping, hiking and nature but I dont think I could leave the grid. Ive been 'online' since the 80s with a 300 baud modem so its in my blood.
Very romantic like you said though, a fantasy and I envy those who are so carefree they can pull it off. edit. Now I'm inspired to go take photos today.

Nature's a nice place to visit, but I wouldn't want to live there.

I hope I do. :P
What I'm trying to say is that people have a tendency of making it "tourist attractions spots" i.e. an increase of people joining them or following them. Telling where they are is simply going to attract the wrong crowd. They're off-the-grid for a reason. |

http://www.mfilomeno.com/eric-valli/...n-canal--.html I hope it's more about people actually living there and not about city people who gives the lifestyle a shot for what ever reason and after month writes a blog about it.

also, i don't know why living "off-the-grid" has to mean "looks like i fell out of a remington painting". is it really necessary to survival to adorn your various jugs and jars with pseudo native artwork or put feathers in your hair? surely somebody is doing this without reverting to 1880s fashion. |

I wish the photographer knew how to use his camera, these pictures suck! He can't even focus properly for the portraits.

with the amish looking folk it seems like they're purposely being anachronistic for some reason i'll likely never know from just looking at the photos. but the dude with the arbitrary feather in his hair and the flower child with the painted jug and the hollowed out horn/gourd hanging from her belt...just look like extras from a period piece of post-apocalyptic film. |

Your feet can really toughen up quite well if you don't protect them, and on the plus side sandals will dry fast and they won't smell as bad from trapping all the dirt and sweat inside like boots. I'd pass on all the leather shit they're wearing though, but I guess it's probably durable (and stylish...)
