So I got scammed on eBay...... #1

Basically selling a DOTA 2 invite, some guy bought it for $25, sent paypal money, sent the invite, all seemed well. Until a few days ago. The dildo fucker files a case saying that I didn't send him an item going on with some bullshit that "I didn't receive a CD with the game and I thought there would be a CD." He goes on with that bullshit despite me knowing full well he's bullshitting me to get his money back. I have screen shots of me friending him, him asking for the invitation, me sending the item, him receiving it, him saying thanks, him playing the game, and him having 18 hours clocked in.

Despite this, eBay files in his favor and eBay gave him $25 dollars back.... to add insult to injury, the fucker messages me today and says, and I quote,
"hehehehehehehehehehehehehehe

great game ! but not CD lol
got refund free game."

I'm on the phone with eBay appeals now, and try to find someway for me to submit my evidence of this. I WILL NOT FUCKING LET THIS FUCKER FUCK ME OVER LIKE THIS.

I know typically, eBay doesn't allow the transaction of virtual goods, and this was the first item I sold on eBay, and there were a number of other closed auctions of DOTA so I figured it was allowed.

Ugh... fucking pissed off right now.

UPDATE: Yeah... I'm fucked.

Moral of the story: Don't use eBay or Paypal...

Had the same thing happen with the new ipad. Sold a 32 giger to a guy with a verified address, used shipping confirmation, and made him sign it to receive it.

Not ten minutes after he signed for it he did a chargeback on his credit card, paypal gave him the money back, ebay STILL took seller fees from me, and he now has a free ipad and my money.

Called his local police station, "we don't deal with fraud and for all we know you could be lying! You said you're from xx right? maybe next time you won't sell something on the internet. Have a nice day."

So he's selling something that's free? Probably against the games TOS so the account could get banned at any time could it not?

For big sales like that isn't a money order the safest way? I get it, the ease of internet transactions, but it takes 5 seconds of reconsideration to realize your scenario is a possible and likely outcome.

I sold a pair of headphones for $250-ish on head-fi, and shipped them out to Canada from the US. Canada Post decided that attempting delivery once was enough, and proceeded to lose the package (it would inevitably get returned to sender, but I didn't know that at the time). Right about at this time, Paypal froze my account with the $250 in it (even though the buyer never complained or anything), making it impossible for me to do anything other than give the other person a refund. Had the phones not come back, I'd have been out $250 and a pair of expensive headphones.

They just don't care.

Good luck convincing a buyer to use a form of payment where all the power is with the seller, especially when they can just go on Ebay and have all the power themselves.

While "deserved" is taking it a bit too far, I can only "sort of" feel for the OP because why were you selling a beta code to begin with? (rhetorical question, to make money, I know)

I mean..I've been buying/selling stuff on the internet since 96..before Paypal and Amazon and eBay.. I never ran into these issues and still never run into these issues assuming I take the time to protect myself and ensure a safe transaction. If someone isn't willing to pay with a form of payment I request, I don't sell it to them. Not that hard. I've probably sent/received over a thousand money orders in all of these years. Yes, I do use Paypal or bank transfers as well, but, again, only after properly screening potential buyers.

For the iPad, I believe Paypal will actually side with the seller if he has some sort of shipping confirmation UNLESS the seller says "the item sent me a box of rocks." Otherwise you can prove that you sent it. Beware though- the box of rocks thing is common. I was looking up eBay scams (after being scammed myself) and found that that method is recommended.

Don't sell digital goods on eBay unless it's your only option. If you get scammed once, you lose the money you would've had, you lose your item, and you get charged a chargeback resolution fee of like $20-30. So you essentially lose out 3x off one asshole. I had a buyer who had like 5 sellers leave chargeback warnings against him and Paypal STILL sided with the scammer buyer.

I've tried selling things through money order. Maybe it's because of the year we live in, but no one I've found is willing to risk it. The best alternative to Paypal I can convince people to use is Amazon, and even then people are worried about why I'm not just using the service that "everyone uses".

I'm not sure what you sell, but if people are willing to buy it via money order, you've got a good thing going.

Having them sign for the package is supposed to be good enough, but it seems like that isn't even a guarantee these days.

Craigslist. Meet in a public place. Accept only cash. Done.

Back when the iPhone 3G was new, I got about $550 for mine within 30 minutes of putting it on Craigslist. No PayPal fees. No eBay fees. No shipping.

In this day and age I'd be reluctant to sell large stuff on ebay. I don't know how companies survive. There must be scammers everywhere!

Having said that, I'm set up an ebay shop today selling iPhone accessories. Low value goods, high volume is the way to go. I can absorb the odd douche trying it on!

Just got off of eBay appeals.... they ain't doing fuck all..... They require "tracking information," in order for something to be done and say that I listed it wrong despite me having what I have....

Guess the only thing eBay is good for is buying cheap cellphone cases from Hong Kong...... It is what it is I guess, lesson learned.

I realize in this day and age people are quickly shying away from "paper" but if you were going to sell a car to someone, even face to face, would you ask them to paypal you the money? We're not quite there yet with making everything into invisible electronic waves.

I sold my Steam account when I got rid of my PC, the buyer was so nice he actually sent me a message saying his son only played games on weekends and asked me if I wanted to use the account through the week, even though he had paid me for it. I declined, but I felt fuzzy inside because of his kindness.

Paypal already awarded the buyer his funds back, didn't they? I doubt they'll take them back based on their rules (that they should have known about before awarding him money).

I wonder if you could snitch to Valve about the code being stolen OP, and at least get the guys ability to play the game revoked.
