Its hard for me these days because his older fiction defined a lot of my adolescent reading, and nowadays I get to a.) see him try and fail to capture what he used to have with a series of mediocre books and b.) descend further and further into homophobic nuttiness.

Yeah, that stinks, seeing your favorites just get worse and worse over time, as creators of entertainment and just people in general. My favorite wrestler of all-time was Chris Benoit, who up until 2007 was simply the best damn pro wrestler ever. Then he murdered his wife and child before killing himself, and nobody mentions his name like Voldermort in Harry Potter. So he went from totally awesome to WTF WHAT A MONSTER, was a real shock to the system.

It's a weird thing, to try and separate the art from the artist(or if you even choose to do that), and I think everybody has to deal with that in their own way.

I started reading Enders Game, it has some significant homoeroticism. I found this fact funny, since I heard he was homophobic.

In cases like this it's obviously much better to separate the author from his work and your enjoyment of it. I mean, J.D. Salinger drank his own urine, but I don't let disturbing stuff like that get in the way of my enjoyment of Catcher in the Rye.
