Is this like Half Life: Opposing Force?
A dudebro shooter starring a spectacled quantum physicist.

Those were removed in MW2 except for where it made sense (snow base infiltration/exfil).
They made a triumphant return in Black Ops though. +1 to the Modern Warfare campaigns too. I'd add all of the Halos (except 2), Crysis 2 and Bad Company 1. Medal of Honor is short, but it follows the MW formula, only better in a few important ways.

This is going to get me killed, but I've always found Half-Life 2 to be incredibly boring. It looked great when it came out (always loved City 17), I like the universe and the story, but it's just so damn boring. I liked the episodes a lot more, especially the second one.
As for my favourites: System Shock 2, Halo: CE, Half-Life, S.T.A.L.K.E.R., Resident Evil 4, Duke Nukem 3D, BioShock, Max Payne 1 and 2, Metro 2033 (flawed, but pretty damn good) and CoD 4. Some of these aren't really pure shooters, but oh well. Honourable mention to BioShock 2's expansion, Minerva's Den. Better mechanics than the first BioShock with a tightly paced, quality story.

lol crysis was pretty bad, especially the second half of the game. The first half being just mediocre. I'm not seeing how Crysis was a huge step forward.

Now that you mention this, I had a lot of fun with Quake 4. Had a nice, old-fashioned feel to it with all it's weapons and varied aliens. Vehicle sections were pretty meh though, and I feel like they really wasted that COMPLETELY FUCKING AWESOME plot twist.

Yeah, you can lump me in with the "HL2 was actually kinda boring" crowd, but I appreciate what it is and what it did for the genre/gaming in general.
Best gunplay/mechanics: > Killzone 2/3 > Battlefield 3 > Gears of War 3 > F.E.A.R. Worst (and/or overrated) gunplay/mechanics: > every single CoD game > Homefront > anything that feels like CoD or Homefront And special snaps to Bioshock for being such an amazing game, that I barely noticed its odd gunplay/aiming idiosyncracies. |

With how expensive it is to develop games nowadays, I wonder if we'll ever see a shooter as relentless as RE4. You're constantly killing new enemies, seeing new environments and doing new shit for like 15+ hours. 7 years later and its virtuosity hasn't really been challenged.

Just recently finished Hard Reset
Campaign is damn awesome Resistance 3 is prob my fav this gen Got to give props to Killzone 2 too even though it really shines in MP. the gunplay and AI is good enough to put it in the ranks for top campaigns as well

RE4 is so far ahead of everything else. The pacing is perfect, I love the feel of the weapons, and just about every encounter feels different. Hell, it even has a great(yet stupid) story.
In terms of FPS games, Timesplitters 2 was damn cool, especially the Neo Tokyo level. I've seen a few mentions of Future Perfect here, is it considered better than TS2? Killzone 2 was awesome as well, really felt like there was an actual war going on. |

Binary Domain is one of the best I ever played. One of the very few that's great from start to finish, and actually has a good story to back it up. While there are plenty of other great shooters, there's always conditions attached, like the crap end of Crysis, or the library of Halo. People might knock the non-shooting segments of Binary, but I thought they were short and sweet. Unlike the shitty vehicle sections of Gears.
