Vanquish

Bulletstorm

Both of these are my fave shooters this gen hands down with Vanquish being my RE4, I still cant put these 2 games down.

Also imo, the names of these games suit each other better if the names where switched.

Bulletstorm and Medal Of Honor were the most overlooked imo.

Bulletstorm is just pure fun, with no bad levels and some intense mini-boss and macro-boss battles. After playing through it you find a lot of shooters lacking, especially in the variety department.

And one of the things I love about Medal of Honor, besides being based upon the very real Operation Anaconda, is the engagement ranges. You'll make your way up mountainsides with enemies behind rocks just a few yards away, others at medium range either fleeing battle or running into positions, as well as a bunch of enemies up on the cliffsides taking potshots. You aren't Rodriguez from MW2 being asked to do the impossible while your AI teammates sit and wait - you're just one of the guys put into seriously hairy situations. The more I play it the more I love what makes it different, even if it still holds to plenty of CODisms.

Bioshock was one of my all time favorites.

edit: The Gears franchise is also very fun, especially in co-op. 1 and 3 are the best IMO.

Halo CE and Reach as well.

Call of Duty 4 and Bioshock take the cake this generation.

Metal Gear Solid 4 above them if we count TPS that have FPS and stealth elements.

Half-Life 2: Episode Two is the correct answer.

F.E.A.R. is a close second for me.

CoD4 was good enough that it made me start playing games outside of FF11 again. Too bad all subsequent releases rehashed all the great gimmick elements that made CoD4 great (heartbeat vibration w/ nuke scene, final scene, etc) and made them cliche.

I remember the old WWII medal of honor games having a compelling campaign. Same goes for Call of Duty 1 and 2 (the originals).

I still think Half Life 1 has the most well paced, engaging campaign of any shooter ever made.

Also have to agree with others, if we are considering a broader definition of shooter, definitely Resident Evil 4 and Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory should be considered. Both are exceptionally well done.

For this gen, Mass Effect 2 and 3 were the best shooters I've played even though I'll never buy another Bioware game again.

The controls were kind of a pain in the ass, but I loved Mass Effect 2's plot and I thought the ending was incredibly sharp and made you feel responsible as a leader and your team.

The plot and ending were shit, but the gameplay in Mass Effect 3 was amazing and finally felt near-perfected. Surprisingly, Kinect made it better and I almost never had to open a menu.

This gen, it's the trilogy of Vanquish, Bulletstorm and Kid Icarus Uprising. Three utterly fantastic shooters.

Max Payne 1 - Played that in 2011 for the first time. I was trippin balls over how I had never played this before then. Aged pretty well. LOVEE it!

Uncharted 2 - First time in 2012. Blown away, lived up to the insane hype and expectations I had for it.

Halo 3 On Legendary. With 4 people. Co-op God.

Call of duty 2 - 2005, year I got into shooters. This plus CSS. COD 2 campaign blew away CoD 1 on PC.

Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood -Underrated for graphics in my opinion. The open wild west levels at max graphics, holy shitt. Campaign was fun, graphics so goooooood.

How they are not shooters when they mechanically function as such? That they have other mechanics such as exploration and puzzle solving doesn't change the core of the game. Action-adventure is not a genre.

It seems to me that very few people understand genres on GAF.

You used to be able to get it on Direct2Drive. Then Gamefly bought them and the game is gone. I can't even reinstall using my old files because D2D's authentication servers are gone.

Half Life 2 and that includes both Episode 1 & 2. Only reasonable answer that comes to mind. I also enjoyed Crysis 2 more than GAF led me to believe I should.

I strongly but respectfully disagree.

Actually the only one in years I can think that I managed to finish(which is not that many) and can honestly say now 'I'm glad I played that, I had a good time', is Vanquish. Before that, Serious Sam: Second Encounter. Gears of War 3 was OK.

Half-Life 2 and it's episodes are the best shooters known to man. God's gift to humanity. Everything from pacing, variety, setting, level design, plot, and characters is masterfully crafted.

Halo: Combat Evolved, Perfect Dark, Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay, Doom 3, and Resident Evil 4 also round out my top shooters of all time.

I've also had an absolute blast this generation with the likes of Gears of War, Bulletstorm, Borderlands, Crysis, Killzone, Uncharted, Vanquish, Rage, Call of Duty, and The Darkness II.

I can't get enough of the shooter genre and this generation has been more than satisfying thus far.

Edit: Damn, how could I forget F.E.A.R.

Halo: Combat Evolved
Half Life 1
Perfect Dark

Everything else is just ok, nothing else has had that special experience that these games did. While FPS games all just keep trying to copy COD4 nothing will change. If we are including third person campaigns then Vanquish, Max Payne 2 and Resident evil 4.

Probably the original Crysis for me. Don't think I've replayed a campaign so many times, fun AI and loads of stuff to mess around with in the semi-sandbox levels.
Also digging the Star Wars Republic Commando love, I thought that game deserved way more respect and seemed to influence a tonne of this gen shooters with its simplified cover and team tactics mechanics.
Chronicles of Riddick is another classic too, haven't got around to play Dark Athena yet despite it chilling in my steam list but playing the original on on release blew my mind at how immersive an fps could get, more so than half life even.

Hehe. Complete opposite for me; I absolutely dreaded Crysis 2's campaign. The gunplay feels good but the rest is sooooooooo boooooooring. I had to force myself to finish it.
