I think the movie which will suffer because of Avengers fatigue and TDKR buzz is Spiderman. I think everyone will watch and maybe rewatch Avengers and there will be a short Superhero fatigue which will affect spiderman and then when the fatigue is about to run out, we get TDKR

I'm very curious to see how Spidey does. None of my friends are interested at all.

I'll probably go see it, though. TDKR should do incredibly well, but the lack of 3D will obviously hurt it's sales. You know TDKR has insane buzz behind it when during the preview for the movie, the theater completely STFU. During every other preview the whole theater was full of folks randomly talking and cracking jokes. When TDKR shows up the entire theatre went dead silent. DEAD SILENT. And that trailer is very quiet at the top to build atmosphere and you didn't hear a peep. Bitches are pumped for that movie. |

So basically Disney foots the bill for advertising and distribution while Paramount gets paid for simply selling the rights to them. Would Paramount have made more money if they kept it? Oh, yes. But over $100M without really lifting a finger is not that bad. And called it earlier: estimate would go up because they have been underselling the grosses each day. Estimate now is $207M. Watch it hit $210M just for the lulz.

Although that trailer ending with that cheesy dialogue between Batman and Catwoman about "it's not a car" is an awful awful way of ending a trailer...I hate how trailers feel the need to bookend everything with some shitty non-representative dialogue like that |

Second weekend record is in the bag unless it has a truly terrifying drop, which I don't see.
Third weekend will stay with Avatar. The likelihood of this having a $69M third weekend as the summer movie season starts to ramp up (with Battleship. Pause for laughter) is very, very low. Of course, who the hell thought this would open to over $200M? Not many. |

I think we'll see how it's legs are when it's 'first Monday' numbers come in. |

If week 3 beats Avatar's, that would be nuts.
Avengers has already shown better legs than HP in that respect. HP had the biggest single day, but Avengers' Sunday number beat HP's Saturday.

Avengers are FAR more male skewing that HP ever was. But, as I said, we'll see soon enough how it holds. |

The curious thing about Avengers is how it breaks the normal rules of film marketing. It's the comic book movie version of a rock festival; it's drawing the interest of people who have seen all of these smaller, single-hero focused films, and who may be fans of only one or two of those. People really didn't know how this idea would resonate among the movie-going public; the shocked response to the numbers from other studios (and various threads on GAF which now smell strongly of boiled crow) prove how unexpected this was to everyone but the most optimistic commentators. I really have no idea how it'll perform next week. It could suffer a 70% dive and fail to break Avatar's record, or it could ring up another $100 million. This is unexplored territory. EDIT: I attended an 8:15 Sunday night 2D showing. The theater was completely full. It's bonkers.

I don't see it breaking $60 million next weekend, but it will probably still beat Dark Shadows. |

Avengers seems to be skewing more casual. Lots of people who skipped the other films (except maybe iron man) and have never picked up a comic are wild about this, and it has absolutely ludicrous word of mouth. It's definitely going to have better legs than potter. |

It is not a 1-1 comparison, but the fact that Avengers had such a minimal drop off from Friday to Saturday shows this should have very sturdy legs for next weekend. For a better comparison: Avengers fell 13% on Saturday, and estimated 17% on Sunday (if the $57M number holds). Dark Knight fell 29% on Saturday and 8% on Sunday. Better Sunday holdover, but showed it would have very nice legs. Dark Knight had a 52% drop on second weekend, which was damn good. If Avengers has a similar drop, hell, let's say it has a 60% drop, it would still make 83M and be the biggest second weekend ever.

That would put it at around $83 million. Given word of mouth, I honestly don't think $100 million is out of the question. The producers of Dark Shadows are probably wandering around muttering "Fuck me!" right about now. |

Dark shadows is definitely getting crushed by this, but the audience for it isn't really 1:1. BATTLESHIP has a lot to worry about, though. |

And it seemed to be chugging along and doing pretty decent overseas...and then Hulk came and smashed puny Battleship.

http://www.deadline.com/2012/05/aven...hina-openings/ Read that link. Just seeing how the numbers kept climbing as they updated was so neat to so. No one expected numbers like this. |

i don't think the studio was counting on avengers performing THIS well or having any kind of legs though- at this rate I'd put avengers third weekend at or above BATTLESHIP, easily...and BATTLESHIP will have no legs at all. if it bombs opening weekend, it's done. |

Its sad how soulless and shameful Battleship is. These types of movies are an embarrassment.

It merely did ok overseas tbh. Word of mouth was dreadful and it doesn't have many territories left, and it's sitting a 200m... That's pretty dreadful for a supposedly major blockbuster. With Avengers probably still going strong, I don't expect its domestic numbers will be enough to pick up the slack. Not even going to break 400m worldwide... Which is good, because it's a shameless piece of shit of a movie :)

OW numbers are inflated thanks to the 3d tax. More 2d showings will result in a more drastic drop. Spec on my pet.

These were bad films. Unfortunately, it doesn't matter since Transformers as a franchise is so strong that people will go and see them anyway. If Transformers had been named "GO-BOTS" instead it would have bombed immediately. BATTLESHIP hitting 50% is not good. it needs strong reviews to bring people to the theatre since it has-once again- no A list actors in the movie at all. It launches in 2 weeks and no one is talking about the film, Everyone is (and will be) talking about Avengers. For comparison, Avengers has a 94% positive rating. Iron Man had a 94% rating. Captain America has a 79% rating. Thor has a 77% rating. I'm not even going to bring up TDK. The movie is trash in comparison to even the weakest movies marvel is putting out.

TDKR doesn't really have a realistic chance. Well releasing in the summer could help it out. Question is how much is Avengers going to make? certainly has the hype and 3D charges to pass it over 500mil.
