I might have a favorite 2D platformer from this generation like NSMB Wii or Kirby, but it's really hard to tell since it's a strong genre. Super Mario Galaxy is easily my favorite 3D platformer (at least until I finish Galaxy 2). Borderlands is my favorite FPS, if it counts as that genre. Torchlight is my favorite loot game. Sports game could also possibly be this generation, but I feel like that's silly, so I'm skipping it. |

Mario Galaxy as the best platformer, Crysis as the best FPS.
Can't think of too many other genre leaders right now. |

Absolutely. I find each generation better than the last.
FPS - STALKER: SoC. I count it as this gen. TPS - Shadows of the Damned Platformer - Rayman Origins Racing - Driver: San Francisco Strategy - Starcraft 2 Action RPG - From what I'm looking at, I bet you Torchlight 2 and Diablo 3 top this list when they're out RPG - New Vegas Open World whatever - Assassin's Creed II, GTA 4, or Red Dead Redemption. I can't decide on that one. I could go on and on

Including DS and 3DS in the equation since the DS isn't dead yet.
*Best 3D Platformer: Super Mario Galaxy *Best WRPG: Skyrim and New Vegas *Best On-Rails Shooter: Kid Icarus (I'm not kidding either.) *Action-adventure: Dawn of Sorrow (also the only Castlevania game I've ever really enjoyed) *Best Racing Game: Mario Kart DS *Best Rhythm Game: Elite Beat Agents *Best Puzzle Game: Tetris DS, World of Goo *Best Puzzle Platformer: VVVVVV |

Super Mario Galaxy 1/2: 3D Platformer
Half-Life 2/Ep1/Ep2: FPS No More Heroes: Beat-em-up Assassin's Creed II: Open-world action/adventure Xenoblade: JRPG (tied with FF6) Portal 2: Puzzle 999: Visual Novel (or whatever its genre is called) Uncharted 2: Interactive Movie (Not trying to incite flames. As a cinematic game, it's top-notch. As a TPS, there are better games out there.) Batman: Arkham Asylum/City: Batman simulator (I don't know what genre to put it in. Definitely has my favorite stealth elements ever.)

Gran Turismo 5- Racing. I debated whether I like GT2 more but the inclusion of online is the tipping point for GT5, it adds so much (obviously).
Uncharted 2- TPS. Perfect action game Skyrim- WRPG God of War 3- Action- Toss up between the original and the third but the improved gameplay and crazy visuals/spectacle/boss fights propelled it to first. I'd also put the original DMC on my list but I just like the total package of GoW3 more. I'm hoping Diablo 3 will be my favourite hack n slash and overtake D2. D2 was great but I never actually finished it nor did I play online that much. I plan on putting way more time into 3. |

FPS -- Half-Life 2 ep:2
RPGs -- None, only a few DS games came relatively close to all of the PS2 gems we got. Console RPGs were disappointing. Platformers -- Mirrors Edge Strategy -- None Puzzle -- Portal I'm really surprised some people have a new favorite game in practically every single genre. You definitely didn't play enough older games. Oh and it would have been nice if The OP had set up A list of genres for the threa to follow. |

Super Mario Galaxy 2 for 3D platforming
Motorstorm Pacific Rift for arcade racer Warhawk for online shooter Donkey Kong Country Returns is a serious contender for 2D platforming... time will tell |

Crackdown is far and away the best GTA clone going around, and is better than any GTA game also.
Gears of War 1 or 3 are also my favorite third person shooters. Dead Nation is my favorite top down shooter. Used to be Loaded on Saturn, but Dead Nation is so awesome. |

Almost every genre I regularly play.
Puzzle- Portal 2 3D Platformer- Super Mario Galaxy 2D Platformer- Donkey Kong Country Returns would be here if not for waggle. (As is, SMB3 and Yoshi's Island would stand above it. Rayman Origins is pretty close as well) SRPG- Tactics Ogre: LUCT (Not exactly this gen I guess) Single Player FPS- HL2:Ep. 2 Third Person Shooter- Vanquish 3D Action- Bayonetta Multi Player FPS- TF2 MMORPG/RPGs in General- WoW (I guess WoW technically began in the last gen, but all the content I've experienced has been developed during this gen.) Made every other RPG seem incredibly lacking. RTS- Company of Heroes Rail shooters- Either Kid Icarus: Uprising or SaP2 Notable Exceptions TBS- Civ IV still holds the throne from Civ V. Maybe the new xpac can redeem it. Adventure- Journey was good but Shadow of the Colossus is still better to me than anything I've experienced in the genre since. Stealth Action- Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory JRPG- FFXII Beat 'em up/2d action- Viewtiful Joe FPS: Total Package- I'm cheating with the genre here, but I still like Halo 2, as a combination of mp and sp, more than any other single fps. For all the crap this gen gets, I feel like the best in game design continue to move forward. New games should exceed old games, as devs and players become more experienced, technology becomes more powerful, and the ability of more and more people to contribute to development increases.

- SMG2 is my favourite 3D platformer
- Skyward Sword is my favourite 3D Zelda game (that's a genre, right?) - Uncharted 2/3 are my favourite cinematic action/adventures. I can't decide between them, each is better than the other in different ways, imo There are probably others. Except for RPGs, this has been a really good gen for me, actually. edit: Mass Effect 2 is my favourite space opera/sci-fi game

I am about thirty, have been gaming since I was a small child and if I were to create an all-time top ten, over half of it would be games from this generation. I'm a Curator-type, and with what I'm attracted to, for me, games are just now coming into their own.
For very well-defined genres, I'd say Team Fortress 2 is my favorite multiplayer first-person shooter ever, and I think the Super Mario Galaxy games are the best 3D platforming games ever, which isn't really saying a lot considering the technical limitations of the previous generations. Super Mario 64 is the only other 3D platformer I'd put on a long list. |

Whatever genre Viva Pinata(and VP:Trouble in Paradise which fills in the gaps and just generally improves on the original across the board) falls under, that's my favourite game in that genre. And still one of my top-3 or favourites this entire generation.
