I remain skeptical of self-driving cars. Perhaps they will be perfect for freeways, but on surface streets, will they be able to read road signs? What about deal with pedestrians, animals, and bicyclists (hand signaling turns)? There's just so much visual communication going on besides the actual geography of the road.

I imagine they would have to be. That or an agreement between car manufacturers and government agencies to let them "monitor" (in quotes because I'm not sure what that would entail) cars of interest. Get ready to sign a contract when you buy a car allowing all this? |

i eagerly await my self-driving car. this is going to completely change north american society (because our cities are largely built around driving). i've lost friends to car accidents that could have been avoided with a self-driving car.
no more drunk driving! :) |

These cars probably have normal insurance policies. |

Can't wait for people to be removed from the driving wheel forever.
Probably some guys will whine about their love of driving and end up crashing anyway, so insurance will take care of them, cause you bet your ass google is going to have hella cameras and sensors and black boxes that they will have a super hard time proving it was google's fault. |

Finally, we are a step closer to an Astro Boy reality.
Nawww. The cars can't fuel themselves, or react to human eemergancies. Plus with commercial trucks you have to have someone there to protect the cargo. And I don't think the cars know how to see if someone wants a ride from it, yet. |

These self driving cars are amazing. Would kill to have one. Waking up early in the morning about to go to work. Can relax on the ride there, eat your breakfast. Or long road trips you can sleep and chill.
So many possibilities. |

Try to add some content to your posts next time instead of trying to casually dismiss my argument.

Fuck this. I love the idea of self driving cars, but if I want to manually drive my car on some winding mountain road you best damn believe that I will.
I don't think legislation restricting driving will ever get passed (in the U.S. at least). I'm sure some people will try, but that sounds exactly like the kind of thing that the GOP would fight against. |

sure driving is fun, and we can hope for possibly being able to drive in zones, probably outside of cities where we'd only hurt ourselves when we wreck. but to seriously hold back human progress just because you want the freedom to be an asshole isn't going to fly with civilized society. i surely expect a huge backlash to this, but this is one of those situations where the government should just mandate this and tell the populace to fuck off |

I think it's completely inevitable once the technology matures. The minority of people who still "love the feeling of driving" (I am one of these people) will have to do it on private property or a racetrack.

I don't understand how anyone can "enjoy" driving.
If you take your car out to a track a drift some boss turns, ok, I get that. But to say, "Yes! I get to drive an hour to work today!" or, "Whooboy, got a lot of errands to run today, I'll tell you what!"... I don't get it. Maybe you just want to be able to continue driving like a maniac at 15+mph over the limit all the time, like some people I know?.. |
