Would be awesome to know the PS3/360 and PC breakdown. Also was expecting more TBH. Especially with steam sales.

Also note that it's $6.79 right now on steam with the new update.

We're talking about a first person puzzle-adventure game, here. It's not going to move CoD numbers.

For Portal? That is amazing. People need to stop comaring every game to CoD and Battlefield. Portal is not a game with $200m marketing behind it.

Very respectable, all things considered. Call of Duty, Grand Theft Auto and a handful of Nintendo franchises have really warped the perception we have of what makes a successful game...

Seriously, those games are the exception not the rule.

Also Publishers pay attention, see what happens when you make a good game and don't act like dicks to your customers.

I'd wager it's probably 1 million and a half 360, about the same for PC and 1 million PS3.

I think everyone has forgotten already that the original Portal was released as a pack-in bonus for Orange Box which was headlined by TF2 and HL2, and became a suprise sleeper hit.

I would consider it a mid-tier game, not quite AAA (I don't mean in terms of quality, but resources), but a cut above XBLA grade and on level with Alan Wake: AN.

Same here. It was my game of 2011. Love it. And since I got it on PS3 I basically got two copies since it came with the ability to play on PC. Now I just need a PC that can play it.

4 millions is a shitload and far more than i expected for a puzzle game, to be honest.

I have no idea what you think average sales are today, but 4 millions is "Uncharted-tier" sales.
Most of the game developers out there would kill for these numbers.

I know too many people who absolutely loved the game and still fangasm about it to this day but didn't buy it.

Still, excellent numbers for a puzzle game.

The game had a $10 million marketing campaign and has voice work done by high profile actors (they probably cost a lot of money or something, but I don't know). Animation and modelling done by ex-Pixar employees and people who worked on the Lord of The Rings films. I'd hardly call Portal 2 "mid-tier".

Eh, all the new features of 2 put it head and shoulders above the original for me.

My ranking of their SP games is something like;

1. Half-Life 2 + Episodes
2. Portal 2
3. Half-Life
4. Portal

With HL2 having a tiny edge over Portal 2.

But it was perfectly paced in terms of narrative and gameplay, just challenging enough, and importantly offered groundbreaking innovative gameplay that had never been seen before.

You can't say any of that about Portal 2.

I think you're crazy, but I won't try to tell you you're not entitled to your opinion.

My only complaint about Portal 2's pacing was that it starts with an initial set of puzzles that are just way too easy. But in terms of narrative, it does an amazing job, especially considering it's a puzzle game.

4 million is quite good for first person puzzle but still its Valve game so maybe some people expected more.

Seems pretty good. Glad for Valve.

You know, I liked it on my first play through, but I wasn't crazy about it. It wasn't until my second play through and going through the co-op that I fell in love with it.

Really cemented Faliszek and Wolpaw as some of my favourite writers in games. I just can't get enough of the Portal universe. I know Valve isn't one to pump out sequels, but I wouldn't mind a third game.

Excellent numbers, though Valve dropped the price through the floor like 2-3 months after launch. It would be interesting to see the breakdown of full price vs sale price.

As far as I'm concerned Erik Wolpaw is the best writer in the gaming industry today.
What amaze me is that somehow I loved his personal touch even before being aware of his existence.
When I played Portal I though "That's the most funny stuff I played since Psychonauts", just to learn a few months later that he was the writer there, too.

Worth it for this one guy: Cave Johnson

Quote:
Science isn't about why, it's about why not. You ask: why is so much of our science dangerous? I say: why not marry safe science if you love it so much. In fact, why not invent a special safety door that won't hit you in the butt on the way out, because you are fired.
Quote:
Good news is, the lab boys say the symptoms of asbestos poisoning show a median latency of forty-four point six years, so if you're thirty or older, you're laughing. Worst case scenario, you miss out on a few rounds of canasta, plus you forwarded the cause of science by three centuries. I punch those numbers into my calculator and it makes a happy face.
Quote:
The lab boys say that might be a fear reaction. I'm no psychiatrist, but coming from a bunch of eggheads who wouldn't recognize the thrill of danger if it walked up and snapped their little pink bras, that sounds like projection.
Quote:
Oh, in case you got covered in that repulsion gel, here's some advice tha lab-boys gave me: [paper rustling] do not get covered in the repulsion gel!
Quote:
Those of you helping us test the repulsion gel today, just follow the blue line on the floor. Those of you who volunteered to be injected with praying mantis DNA, I've got some good news and some bad news: bad news is we're postponing those tests indefinitely. Good news is we've got a much better test for you: fighting an army of mantis men. Pick up a rifle and follow the yellow line. You'll know when the test starts.
Quote:
For this next test we put nanoparticles in the gel. In layman's terms, that's a billion little gizmos that are gonna travel into your bloodstream and pump experimental genes and RNA molecules and so forth into your tumours. Now maybe you don't have any tumours. Well don't worry, if you sat on a folding chair in the lobby and weren't wearing lead underpants we took care of that too.
Quote:
Just a heads up: that coffee we gave you earlier had fluorescent calcium in it so we can track the neuronic activity in your brain. There's a slight chance the calcium could harden and vitrify your frontal lobe. Anyway, don't stress yourself thinking about it. I'm serious, visualizing the scenario while under stress actually triggers the reaction.
I tried to find and post only the good ones but I ran out of space. Dat damn good. The voice acting and script of 2 blows 1 out of the water. The cave johnson area and white/blue/orange puzzles are amazing. Can't wait for 4. I love 1 and it was great but 2 is worth it for the interaction between characters and the story is well done. Loved it.
