It goes further than that. Quoting ballotpedia**

Quote:
The measure would define marriage in the state constitution as between one man and one woman, and would ban any other type of "domestic legal union" such as civil unions and domestic partnerships
So yeah, smh NC. At least I can say I got out and voted despite a bit of a personal hangup during the process.

Well, not really moving backwards since it was never legal in North Carolina. More like staying in place.

60-40 in a bible-belt state? That's pretty damn close.

Part of that was a huge student voting block (young voters). He's lost that this time around, so who knows.

Recently came back from my first trip to the outer banks. It was beautiful, and what I saw of the mainland was as well. I won't be going back though, and I'm sorry if any of my dollars went to support the state or these sorry little creatures that voted this in.

I think pretty much every similar ballot initiative has failed.

But they are getting to be close to 50/50 . . . I think they might start passing in states that are pretty blue.

But really, "LOL NC WHAT DID U EXPECT" is an annoying but relatively accurate summary.

Staying in place is doing nothing. Moving backwards is specially putting it into writing in their constitution.

Oh gah, yeah, only read the first part of the title and went for the meat of the thread. Still though, I'm really surprised that the legislation went so far as to ban civil unions and domestic partnerships for same sex couples. All of this despite the fact that gay marriage has already been defined as illegal within NC law, this extra layer of nonsense is just going to make it harder to repeal all of this in the coming years.

Talk radio was flooded with shit like this day before election as well.

Maybe in the next 5-8 years we'll see a public shift warranting a revisit to this amendment, but changing the minds of a bible belt state on a hot button issue like gay marriage may be a lost cause for the forseeable future, especially with the lead they had with this amendment.

Here's some interesting polling information btw.
Quote:
A March 15-19, 2009 poll by Elon University Poll revealed that 43% support an amendment on same-sex marriage, while 50% are opposed and 5% are undecided. A total of 620 registered voters were polled.
And a couple years later ...

Quote:
A February 20-24, 2011 poll by Elon University Poll revealed that 38% support an amendment, while 56% are opposed and 5% are undecided. A total of 467 registered voters were polled.
So from here by all intents and purposes it looks like momentum was shifting towards people not supporting this amendment. All was good and fine ... but then something happened.

Quote:
A September 30-October 3, 2011 poll by Public Policy Polling revealed that 61% support an amendment to establish marriage between one man and one woman, while 34% are opposed. A total of 760 registered voters were polled. The margin of error was +/-3.6%
Quote:
An April 27-29, 2012 poll by Public Policy Polling revealed that 55% would vote for the amendment, while 41% would vote against it, and 4% are undecided. A total of 982 likely primary voters were polled. The margin of error was +/-3.1%
Wtf happened?

Elon's question was not on the amendment, but on its contents. North Carolina's support civil unions at about 55-60%. The problem is the anti-Amendment 1 side didn't really get the message across that THIS ALSO BANS CIVIL UNIONS AND BASIC RIGHTS AND THINGS PEOPLE LIKE.

I'm wearing my little "I Voted" sticker and am shaking my head sadly. If anyone wants to see what counties of North Carolina are part of the 21st century, WRAL has amendment voting broken down by county.

I'm looking forward to the confused backlash from people who later realized they voted themselves out of domestic partnerships and civil unions without realizing exactly what they were doing.

So, does the amendment prevent the hospital visitations by partners too, or is my understanding wrong?

This is a pitch perfect example of why direct democracy is a bad idea from a human rights perspective, its what's referred to as the "tyranny of the majority" in which minority groups are denied basic egalitarian treatment because of majority prejudices.

Depends. The federal government recommends to all hospitals to allow gay partners visitation rights, but those don't actually have to be honored.
