Please do no respond with "LOL NC WHAT DID U EXPECT". That doesn't help any discussion.

60-40 in a bible-belt state? That's pretty damn close.
Part of that was a huge student voting block (young voters). He's lost that this time around, so who knows. |

Recently came back from my first trip to the outer banks. It was beautiful, and what I saw of the mainland was as well. I won't be going back though, and I'm sorry if any of my dollars went to support the state or these sorry little creatures that voted this in.

I think pretty much every similar ballot initiative has failed.
But they are getting to be close to 50/50 . . . I think they might start passing in states that are pretty blue. But really, "LOL NC WHAT DID U EXPECT" is an annoying but relatively accurate summary. |

Oh gah, yeah, only read the first part of the title and went for the meat of the thread. Still though, I'm really surprised that the legislation went so far as to ban civil unions and domestic partnerships for same sex couples. All of this despite the fact that gay marriage has already been defined as illegal within NC law, this extra layer of nonsense is just going to make it harder to repeal all of this in the coming years.
Talk radio was flooded with shit like this day before election as well. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TPY5mZt6aL8 (obviously in audio form) Maybe in the next 5-8 years we'll see a public shift warranting a revisit to this amendment, but changing the minds of a bible belt state on a hot button issue like gay marriage may be a lost cause for the forseeable future, especially with the lead they had with this amendment. Here's some interesting polling information btw.

I'm wearing my little "I Voted" sticker and am shaking my head sadly. If anyone wants to see what counties of North Carolina are part of the 21st century, WRAL has amendment voting broken down by county.
I'm looking forward to the confused backlash from people who later realized they voted themselves out of domestic partnerships and civil unions without realizing exactly what they were doing. FnordChan |

So, does the amendment prevent the hospital visitations by partners too, or is my understanding wrong? |

This is a pitch perfect example of why direct democracy is a bad idea from a human rights perspective, its what's referred to as the "tyranny of the majority" in which minority groups are denied basic egalitarian treatment because of majority prejudices.

Edit: bigoted how? I was saying that I'd vote no if I could. I just don't see how this applies only to NC over other states
