Probably pretty much the same. Maybe a smaller margin between the sides.

All the people on facebook who are happy about this... ugh, it's disgusting. I voted against it with an absentee ballot, but my county ended up overwhelmingly in favor.

I'm ashamed. And mad.

Yep. All but one of the major cities in the state voted against the amendment -- Asheville (Buncombe), Charlotte (Mecklenburg), RTP (Wake/Orange), Greensboro (Guilford), Boone (Watauga), Wilmington (New Hanover). Unfortunately, the cities just aren't big enough.

The only one that didn't appears to be Winston-Salem (Forsyth).

For the record, not all people from North Carolina are bigots.

The rest of the free world will be angry at North Carolina tonight. But let's honor the many people there who voted AGAINST an act of hatred.

Alright genius, fill us in on the voting breakdown. How many of the people that voted for it are "rednecks"? Or is it your assertion that anyone who votes for it is a redneck? And I didn't say move on. I pointed out that it's idiotic to label a state "redneck" because of the result of one vote. Man I guess California was full of rednecks too, eh?

Interesting assertion. It certainly can't be literally true as there are always odd outliers. But it would be interesting to know the voting record of the nonreligious on this. I'd suspect like 97% against but a few "Eewww gays" people voting for it. Of course it depends on how you define 'nonreligious'.

Only 46% of people voting realized Amendment One banned civil unions for same sex partners. Most people had no idea what they were voting for.

Not really.

Just goes to show who's uninformed and what the climate was like.

No, it kinda doesn't. Unless we're completely redefining "redneck", which we're not. Blanket statements like that are just pure laziness.

Religion implies an observance of practices, not just a belief in the deity. So in that sense there were many "non-religious" who voted for this amendment by simple fact that there are many believers who don't actively participate in faith activities or institutions but who still hold onto many of the beliefs and ideas.

The representatives that created the amendment worded it so the amendment would confuse the electorate, and they succeeded. That was the only way it was guaranteed to pass.

More lazy blanket statements. Advertising for the amendment focused specifically on banning same-sex marriage. The part about it also outlawing civil unions wasn't played up at all. But I guess according to you people that voted against it that thought they were only voting against banning gay-marriage are rednecks too.

And speaking of ignorant, you just called North Carolina a southern state. They're a mid-atlantic state.

If they couldn't be bothered to understand what they were voting for, yeah.

It's a southern state. South of the Mason-Dixon line. Part of the Confederate States of America. Redefining North Carolina as anything but the south is being wrong.

Interestingly, there was quite the hullabaloo about a month ago when the NC Speaker of the House, one of the key republican lawmakers responsible for getting the ban on the ballot, predicted the ban will be repealed within the next 20 years.

Constitutional amendment to provide that marriage between one man and one woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this State.
From Ballotpedia

Shame that this happened, but we were handed a short deck, this coming on a Primary ballot as opposed to the same time as the general election didn't help.

Can someone clarify how this jeopardizes domestic violence protection for women? I'm guessing it's because different-sex domestic partnerships are no longer recognized, but I'm not clear on what mechanisms are in place to "protect" married women versus unmarried ones.

I figure it goes something like this:

1. Gays are gross.
2. When something is legal that means the government/people is specifically advocating for it.
3. It'll piss off the liberals.

And that's without even bringing religion into it.
