Why has nobody made a Blast Corps clone? #1

It seems to be a genre in and of itself. Everybody fucking loves it, yet there doesn't seem to even be any shitty knock-offs made. Maybe there has and I just never heard about them.

Do games similar to Blast Corps exist? If no, why the fuck not?

Great game, way too many dump truck missions though.

A sequel make an awesome 3DS game with that top down view.

Nah, too different. Just been playing BC on an emulator and it's still brilliant. Probably my favourite Rare N64 game.

It's the closest I can think of but it's pretty low budget (it's an indie game). A game on blast corps scale in this day and age would probably be either too expensive or too hard to do with the lower console memory.

The dump truck was one of the most satisfying vehicles in the game.

Once you mastered it, it was immensely destructive, and it became a metagame of finding the optimal path/angles, and mastering the timing/controls to get the platinum medal.

There needs to be more love for the dump truck.

I think most people preferred the Mechs (the "J" Mech especially) because they could just obliterate shit.

Something like Blast Corps would be tons of fun with modern day physics and destructible environments.

I loved the game, but got stuck with a mission where you're driving up as the screen moves, and there is a giant walking robot looking thing just demolishing things.

That's still how I hear it in my head when I read it, even though I know it's not correct and the game is the only time ever I'd mistake "Corps" for "Corpse". Weird.

Well, part of what works well about the game is the variety in level design and a big part of that is how different all the vehicles were. I'm not saying the dump truck should be everyone's favorite, but in my experience, it gets rather unfairly maligned by a lot of people who otherwise profess to love the game.

My post back there was mostly in defense of what I, and I hope others, felt was actually one of the more memorable and satisfying parts of the game. Sure, it was a steep learning curve, but finally mastering the dump truck was a great part of my experience with Blast Corps.

When you got good, it was Destruction Derby meets Initial D. Smash entire blocks in one big drift and keep the perfect line to lose as little momentum as possible to drift into the next block.

Man, I need to play this again.

I feel like I played that game forever. It just kept going and going all the way to Pluto. I have often wondered why we don't get some games like it in the Indy space. I also wonder why more people don't try to match the greatness of Super Metroid in a modern low budget side scroller on iOS, PSN, XBLA.

It's fine but there wasn't enough of the other stuff for my tastes.

Ideally you should be able to do any level with any vehicle, once you've beat it once with the default vehicle.

Hrm. Watching that video, I can think of 9 or eleven reasons why a major publisher might still want to shy away from a building-busting game... but it does look fun, and I think a good Blast Corps-type game could be done without courting controversy.

It's too bad Volition has to focus completely on Saints Row now to keep THQ in business because basically we're talking the vehicle parts of Red Faction Guerrilla with an scoring system and an arcade-style ruleset. I don't think there's any room for a PSN/XBL offshoot game on that engine anymore (Red Faction or otherwise) since all of THQ's small-scale games shit the bed.

(Also to Chalk, great OT idea)

Uh, there are several games that match that description. That number explodes if you include pc. The "indy space" and psn/xbla only overlap a tiny bit.

Have you ever heard of cave story? Or uh, shadow complex I suppose. Aquaria? It's probably one of the most popular types of games in the indie scene.

It's not really like that, Red Faction was still from a different/separated team than the SR team within Volition ,so SR development don't affect RF at all,but problem is after Red Faction: Armageddon THQ fired most members of RF team.

Considering how close Jet Force Gemini is to Gears of Wars, all I can say is that RARE is insane for not reusing some of their IPs

i pimp the hell out of this game in almost every "underrated games" thread, "games that need sequels" thread, "game series you'd like to see X developer work on" thread, and pretty much any scenario which would lead to more people appreciating what a unique animal blast corps is and possibly spawning a sequel, i will say those words and try to bring that future into being every. single. time.

What was the dumptruck level where the nuke was on train tracks in a desert? I feel like it was Diamond Sands. At any rate, the first time I finished that level I just about crapped my pants in joy. Somehow hit the perfect drift to nail all of those long buildings, then made it through the section at the end with the dynamite by the skin of my teeth. Such a sweet game.

I still remember how I got through this mission. By slowly backing up straight into buildings. The damage is pretty weak but for some reason it stacks up quickly to bring down building sections.

The game got very challenging in the later stages, those puzzles took a while to figure out but even that was fun.

A remake with modern physics, explosions and graphics would be just amazing, specially if you had a Sim City like editor where you could share levels with other people, I can only dream!
