Rubbish. Dubstep is one-note pop trash that's used by every pop producer that I have to listen to on that commerical radio station I have to listen to. It's like the McDonalds of music, it's like the new keytar. It's got no identity, no style. It just serves to infect my other favourite genres and artists, like Britney Spears, with its horrible, lazy bombast.

hey congrats man you like post-dubstep a whole lot.

some of that is dubstep.
some of it is good old fashoined trip-hop.
some of it defies classification (which usually gets labeled post-dubstep because its all bassy).

congrats on your great taste too.

That OT title really is stupid.

Its not a genres fault when its overused by artists that sell out for some musical trend.

Oh and SBTRKT (The album) isnt that good.

Whenever I listen to dubstep it just seems overly indulgent. I heard a recording of a live Skrillex performance and when ever "it" would "drop" it sounded like people were being murdered due to the audience reaction. Is "drop-lust" a thing?

Not having listened or really understood what dubstep was until this thread I'll say this: I doubt dubstep is the last nail. Music will persist. But perhaps I'm wrong and in 20 years people will ask "Daddy, what was this thing called music when you were young?".

And as this is my first real exposure to dubstep I'll say this: I have a hard time calling this a subgenre, it's mostly just like everything else.

I'm not well-versed in electronic music, so can someone help me out with how this song is dubstep? I'm hearing 90's house piano, 90's house voice samples and a breakbeat. Where's the dubstep aspect? Not being an ass, honestly want to know.

Where were U in 92 is not really dubstep as much as it is a tribute to 90s trance/electronic. The use of 2-step from garage and a sort of dark atmosphere, which you can hear more in his album Dedication, is more what people were referring to as dubstep.

But now I have to ask you how it's trance? To me it sounds very much like late 80's/early 90's pop house, but with a dubby atmosphere and a breakbeat.

It's amazing how long this thread is and how many of these comments it contains, yet none of you actually read the OP. The dude loves dubstep, or at least used to. He's saying it's lame that it's a fad and a lot of weak dubstep is being made because of it and artists that have more talent doing other things are wasting their time doing shitty dubstep.

Are you talking about the song specifically or the entire album? It takes alot of influence from a whole range of electronic music from around that period. The track specifically though doesn't really remind me of house pop, though I'm not really that familiar with electronic music from '92 because I was born at '92. Could you point me to a reference? It's definitely not really a dubstep album.

I'm not talking about the ~2000s shit, I'm talking about whatever has been coming out the past 2-3 years or so. I don't really care, good dubstep artists are still making good dubstep music. OP is overreacting. I would hesitate to classify Sbtrkt, Rustie and James Blake as 'dubstep.'

If something as simple as why someone likes a genre of music is beyond your ability to reason then I don't know how you are able to function in the world.
You've got some pretty terrible reasoning skills.

Wow the opening statement is really rubbing me the wrong way. Saying SBTRKT is "easily" the best out of dubstep is pretty ignorant as there's so much beautiful and unique dubstep out there. I don't know how anyone can choose one album out of a genre and say its monstrously better than the others. I think his debut album is good, but you are doing him a disservice by saying that.

I am really glad at the great links people posted so far, but the argument about if it's dubstep or not isn't really helping against his point. Most those links at least have obvious dubstep influences, I don't believe it really needs to result in arguments. They do well to show why dubstep is not killing music.

I don't believe dubstep is killing music. There are people who hear it and create soulless imitations, but the same happens with every genre really...

What do intelligent, depressed teenagers listen to?

I'd probably like that more than dubstep, which I expect them to despise, just like I despised the mainstream rap and hip-hop stuff as a teen.
