Dubstep elitism is so 2010.

There's good dubstep and bad dubstep. The UK Bass scene in general is interesting, competitive, constantly evolving and often exciting. Yes, I too tire of the incessant wobbling. But dubstep's not killing music. It's not even killing electronic dance music. Hell, it's not even killing UK Bass. Some of its elements have just been taken to far and lost their subtlety and novelty.

EDIT: For some of you guys, dubstep long predates video games trailers, and the place where dubstep ends and other UK Bass scene subgenres like garage, grime, 2-step, etc. begin is not clear. It is a much wider variety of music than game trailers and shitty youtube remixes, and artists like James Blake and SBTRKT are part of that scene. In fact, James Blake considers himself dubstep:

Originally Posted by J Bleezy:

I think the dubstep that has come over to the US, and certain producers — who I can't even be bothered naming — have definitely hit upon a sort of frat-boy market where there's this macho-ism being reflected in the sounds and the way the music makes you feel. And to me, that is a million miles away from where dubstep started. It's a million miles away from the ethos of it. It's been influenced so much by electro and rave, into who can make the dirtiest, filthiest bass sound, almost like a pissing competition, and that's not really necessary. And I just think that largely that is not going to appeal to women. I find that whole side of things to be pretty frustrating, because that is a direct misrepresentation of the sound as far as I'm concerned.
EDIT: If you guys want, you could make up a new name for the kind of dubstep that you hate and stick it all together, so you wouldn't have to deal with the subtleties of a community that's changing weekly and it would be more convenient to whine about it. That sounds pretty cool.

If anything, I think it's hit radio that is killing music. The whole concept of hit radio blows, when you hear the same god damn song for the 20th time in an hour. At least dubstep is something new, but the gimmick of it will fade in time just like everything else.

I like how people think that autotune is something new. It's been used in the music industry since the early 70's if not earlier. Do you feel like we do/talk box, or all that stuff by frampton is no different then autotune, or what autotune does.

It wasn't until more recently that we've used autotune outside of the recording studio and as an actual tool in the creation of music. And yes it's music, just like electronica is music. It doesn't matter if the instrument is analog or digital, or how the sounds get produced, music comes in the composition and exploration of audio.

IMO, music is not the theft of a sample and reading poetry or words overtop of it.

Hudson Mohawke - Satin Panther

Also look into:

Starkey (Space Traitor Vol 2 and Open the Pod Bay Doors are the most recent and are fantastic)

Rusko - Songs (most recent album)

Skream - Skreamizm

Benga - Diary of an Afro Warrior

Alex Clare - Lateness of the Hour (if you like vocals)

That's not to say there isn't bleeding edge dubstep music out there. However, even these isolated examples are musical mosaics more than anything. The three finest dubstep albums from last year illustrate this point nicely. SBTRKT's self-titled debut, easily THE best dubstep album ever made, traces its roots to UK Funky and microhouse more than anything else. Rustie divests himself from the constraints of dubstep by turning the whole "wub-wub" aesthetic on its head. James Blake's music is so wholly disparate from the dubstep world that his music has earned the unbelievably suitable moniker of "neo-soul."

The problem is that the very genre of dubstep has degenerated to a parody of itself. Mainstream dubstep is absolute trash, exploiting the fundamental fixtures of the genre to corny and humiliating extremes. Worse still, it's infiltrating perfectly capable standalone genres to the point where I believe the genre is inimical to good music.

The last straw for me is the abominable new Infected Mushroom album. What was once the vanguard of psytrance music is now another victim of selling out in the worst fashion possible. This shit needs to stop.
Okay... Infected Mushroom deviated from psytrance back in 2004 with Converting Vegetarians. They've barely been psytrance for a long time. I was one of the people who complained when psytrance basically took over the doof/outdoor dance music scene for many years... and now it is dubsteps turn as the flavour of the week. It will be everywhere for a few years, then something else will get popular and whatever genre that is will be over exposed.

Here's the point: dubstep isn't "killing music". It's just a trend that is currently popular that will pass like all trends. Chances are people complained that your favourite genre (whatever it happens to be) was "killing music" at some stage as well!

Whatever you want, indie, acoustic, ambient, classical, instrumental, throw-backs, soundtracks, or whatever it is that you like... There is so much awesome shit that I don't even have time to listen to it all. Music is far from dead. You just need to look harder. :) Turning on the radio doesn't count.

i usually find dubstep to be incredibly irritating. there are a few tunes i like that might fall under the label, but it has a strangely high amount of utter garbage.

thats just my experience, obviously. it's more than a little ridiculous to argue it's "killing" music though.

The problem with genres is that it is too easy to label one side of the genre as a representation of the whole. For instance most people would be surprised to know that Rustie, James Blake, and SBTRKT are mostly considered "dubstep" artist. This problem happens in other genres within a genre as well. Metal is a sub genre of rock, but does that mean Death metal represents all metal? No, just like Swedish Melodic Death Metal doesn't represent all of Death Metal.

Hence Genres are kinda dumb and you should just listen to whatever you like, genres be damned. Because it would be a shame to dismiss something just because the only thing you know about it is the genre someone told you it belongs in.
