Beside all its limits, it was the very example of pay to win, with outrageous prices and tons of time sinks. I actually alrady posted this in another thread, but if you read this blog from a developer you'll have a pretty clear idea of what *sucks* with these social games. Here's a hint: no, it isn't just the low production value.

I don't really have an interest in playing Facebook games...but I suppose I'll try Outernauts when it comes out. I'll try anything once, and it's Insomniac so it can't be totally horrible. ;) I also think it's great that Insom is branching out into smaller Facebook games. While they might not interest Insom's core fan base, they have the opportunity to gain a whole slew of new fans. (and moneyz)

Either way, the mention of multiple console games in the works has me curious :P |

I'm really hoping that their NC studio is working on a new downloadable title. They're a really big team though, so downloadable may be "beneath them" so to speak.

Edit: Seriously Insomniac... Pitch a new Blasto game to SCE. You guys could actually make a good game out of that..l

Why wouldn't I be? He's essentially upset that the games are tedius, free, and you can pay money for things to make the grind shorter. So in short, he's upset that the design isn't what he likes, and that you eventually have to pay money for them.
On the flip side, we game on thousand dollar TV's, expensive surround sound set ups, etc. The end result is ultimately the same. You pay money to do something you're clearly getting enjoyment out of. Just because this pompous douche bag thinks his priorities in gaming are more important than those of a "social gamer" on facebook...doesn't mean he's right, or even justified. They've said they're not making Resistance, and that from here on out they'll own all the IP's they create. That's pretty much it. They're working with another studio to develop the HD Collection of Ratchet, and may be working on something on the side with their NC Studio. Ratchet is still a possibility, but no one knows at this point. |

In terms of with Sony, since we aren't making more Resistance, I guess that means you could infer we'd only ever make more Ratchet games and/or new IP with them. Not that we are necessarily making anything with them besides collaborating on the R&C Collection. |

THIS is his point: "This is where I start to lose my calm. Needing to click each square is “simultaneously entertaining and a little bit annoying”, is it? On what planet? It’s not entertaining, it’s just straight-forward tedium. There is no ambiguity here. But that isn’t the part that offends me. What offends me is that upon realizing that this tedium exists in the game, where a normal game developer might take the time and effort to make the player’s life easier by streamlining the tedium out of the interface so that all crops can be planted at once, a ‘social game designer’ gleefully pounces on it as an opportunity to sell the player an escape from the tedium their own design imposes in the first place."

I've had my stint with Facebook Games, I've played Farmville, Mafia Wars, Vampire Wars, Monster Galaxy, inFamous Anarchy, Angry Bird, Tetris Friends, Diamond Dash, Cafe World, Assassins Creed Project Legacy (Probably the best use of a Facebook game), Bejewelled Blitz and Zuma Blitz (Still play occasionally), Frontierville, Cityville, Fishville etc and played other social games like Glitch.
I'm very interested if there is anything truly innovative in Outernauts (Silly name imo) Atm it sounds mainly like Monster Galaxy and Glitch crashed together, will be interesting to see how far the RPG elements go as I see that as something making it stand out. One thing that annoys me about this type of Facebook game is the limited time exclusive items, if I happen to miss out on something for some reason then I'm never getting that item/monster/event. If its a yearly thing then thats cool, I can handle having another chance next year to get it (Could be I have to do twice as many things to unlock it, just some alturnative but harder route to get the same item later after the promotion). This in part is because I am a completionist, once I can no longer get something, I wont be able to 'complete' the game, so why continue playing. I don't have a lot of Facebook gaming friends to keep me invested so I just get bored. I'm also generally not getting a story worth investing in to keep me coming back as a single player person, without a great story or rewards outside of the game it is more obvious than other games that I am sinking time in and getting little out. I know it will run on the same energy/time model as most games and thats fine, but if you can give me something to do in the game while I am waiting for my energy to refill then you are going to keep me invested and more likely to stay around, not just leave after I have run out of energy and forget to come back. Something like a slot machine game i can spend in game cash on, or a little puzzle game/arcade where i can hang out and get stuff. I am aware I can play and do other things while waiting for energy to refill but if the game hasn't grabbed me quickly there's little reason for me to return. This happened to me with inFamous Anarchy, it was a forgettable game, left one day because I had run out of energy and didn't return, the game had gotten too repetitive. Oh and James, if you want to rush me into the beta, I won't say no ;)

And signed to the Beta of this FB game. Looking forward. I've only dabbled on Dragon Age and Dungeons and Dragons FB games for a while but I'll give it a go for sure. |

Also, I wouldn't really say the price for high definition gaming is reasonable, at least not any more so than someone who opts to spend more money to skip the non-sense in a F2P social game. I mean, LoL is basically the same as FarmVille in its business model. You can either play a lot with other players to earn in-game currency and advance / get new stuff, or you can skip it and buy it. So yea, continue to not take me seriously because I'm making sense. Continue basing your thoughts and opinions on the word of someone who clearly hasn't done their research. |

Games like Bejelled Blitz, they are there purely to skip the grind, but I don't believe it to be the majourity. To say microtransactions are there to simply skip grinding and social stuff is naive and taken purely from a consumer perspective. |

The Facebook and iOS numbers are just ridiculous right now. Yet, people keep complaining everytime they see a new dev jump on board. But yeah, I really do hope this funds the hardcore games down the line. And yeeeeah...i'm probably not going to play this game. |

I'm not sure if you are deluded or dishonest at this point.

And I have no idea about what you think is changed since 2006, cause it's not like Facebook games did get any better meanwhile. |

You're trying too hard. Still, most of the times a decent shooter has some dignity as product putting some proper effort in the attempt to be a decent game, which often is not the case for Facebook games.

well, it is a facebook game. going for the common denominator in design, given the platform, isn't a bad thing.
facebook games can be enjoyable... it just seems people are starting to become tired of playing them ON facebook. the backlash against game invites on facebook is kinda interesting. i hardly get any, nor do i send them anymore unless asked. namely because so many now complain about receiving them. playing ville games isn't cool anymore (lol). ![]() the facebook game hate has been spreading. at first it seemed to be focused on zynga, but it seems to be slowly becoming games on facebook. draw something may be a lesson for zynga here. the audience they chase is beyond fickle. a large user base, comes with potential but =/= worth. having 20 projects that are focused on a smaller audience can equal a draw something... and it's safer. gree shows its a better formula. zynga needs to hurry with its own portal. i'd rather play on a 3rd party platform that houses these games and connects to your social network as a link. im sure facebook dosent like that, but... who cares about them ;D outside of just seeing these games as a evolution of browser based gaming, the facebook component is a blip unless they evolve what gaming is on facebook. the marketplace already seems to be hitting a plateau. having to friend strangers to get connections in a game isn't a working solution. if zynga (or someone) cant make this portal publishing idea work, im not really sure where this type of business is going to go (other than the app store). |

It's all speculation at this point by everyone, but I really would've loved to be a fly on the wall with the last conversations with Sony directly that led to this weird, estranged relationship they now have with one another. It is just weird seeing them drop a Facebook game in the mix. I just want them to keep making great games like Resistance, but now that they've dropped that, I'm sure R&C isn't far behind so they can make all multi plat games. amirite or amiclose James? |
