But Iwata has already said he wants to go after that market. In order to sway that market to Nintendo, they need something other that what's already available on other platforms to be succesful. Right now, the best studio they have that can accomplish this goal is Retro. So saddling Retro with a game that could be done just as well by another studio (i.e. Treasure) seems foolish and counterproductive to what Iwata wants to accomplish.

And they did release a SF64 remake for the 3DS, I'm sure they had a secondary motive to gauge the popularity of the series to see if it is still viable enough to continue on. I don't imagine Nintendo abandoning this one fully yet. They probably still have something sitting on the back burner. Retro or not.
But who knows.... I guess we will have to wait for E3 to find out.
It's Nintendo after all. I'm sure they're not looking for "niche" for any of their franchises.

It could end up being a new IP. I think what might happen is, what Nintendo had done with Kid Icarus, have an old franchise completely re-done in a different genre, there are plenty of Nintendo franchises that never made it past the 8, or 16 bit era. If Retro used one of them it would feel really fresh, and give them all the freedom in the world, as they wouldn't be bound to people's expectations for a certain franchise, like Star Fox, Metorid, etc.

Just the news that Retro is working on a Wii U game makes my body ready in any way. If it's a Star Fox game, then I am definitely ready.

Hey, you know, a new Star Tropics by Retro would be pretty sweet. I'm being serious too. |

I'm all for a new Star Fox with the same voice actors as 64. Peppy needs to be in the crew again, if only for his inspirational words. Or he should be constantly guiding you with positive reinforcement throughout the level. "You're becoming more like your father" brought a tear to my eye :') |

You can hate Starfox Assault but the Star Wolf theme is one of the best piece of music in the series

Where did this idea come from that the Star Fox series has become a "mess" or that the brand is somehow damaged?
Star Fox (SNES, 1993) -- Groundbreaking on-rails shooter. Star Fox 2 (SNES, cancelled) -- Added tactical planning to the shooting bits. Never released due to only being finished late in the SNES's life cycle. Said to be excellent. Star Fox 64 (N64, 1997) -- Excellent update of the original. Adds multiplayer support. Star Fox Adventures (GC, 2002) -- Surely one of the best Zelda clones yet released. Absolutely lush and still one of my favourite action-adventures of the last ten years. Star Fox Assault (GC, 2005) -- Originally two different games, one for the home and one for the arcade, that was combined into one project, making the pacing feel uneven at times. Fantastic multiplayer. Only major problem in my opinion is the floaty feeling when controlling characters on foot. Star Fox Command (DS, 2006) -- Development lead by Dylan Cuthbert, one of the main people on Star Fox 1 & 2 for SNES. Realises the potential of Star Fox 2 by adding an engaging tactical element to the already great shooting action. Star Fox 64 3D (3DS, 2011) -- Graphical update of an excellent original. This series is in no need to be saved, in my opinion. It just needs more games to better take advantage of what is a fantastic property with great potential for a wide range of differing gaming experiences.

But hey, that's part of the reason why, even if a new game wasn't the "HD update to Star Fox 64" (which would be my first want), I would be interested in seeing what Retro, or even Kamiya and P* could do, if they were given the green light to make another "Adventures/Assault" Star Fox game. Especially Kamiya, though. That guy has proven time and time again that he could probably make such a game that does the rail shooter aspects of Star Fox justice, while injecting an action-adventure element that wouldn't be such a "throw-away" either. If such a thing was the "something wonderful" Kamiya was working on, I wouldn't mind at all... |

^My point was that the old Star Fox games weren't loved because they were rail shooters - they were loved because they were good games. Being a rail shooter won't automatically make the series good, something a lot of people miss. And as some said - even the hated series can have positive qualities that even trump older, beloved games.

All-range mode is pretty much a proof that the franchise can spread out from rail shooting - but it's still lies within the comfort zone. It's sci fi shooting after all. With that said, that Zelda game sounds nice if it's done competently - think of Four Swords! |

So, whatever they decide to do with the brand now, and whomever is in charge of it (assuming this game exists at all)? They'd be wise not to tear down what relative good will they re-established with 64's re-release. |

The 3D release didn't really help much though and proves that the public doesn't care about the brand much anymore - at least, from what I gather. The sales aren't too warm. KI:U however really made a great debut and shows how a shooter can be really well-made. |

But what a series' comfort zone is is highly subjective. I'm sure there are people out there that would be entirely comfortable making it into a dating sim (a jokester might argue that Command was pretty close), and there are those out there that aren't comfortable with the series unless it's rendered in crappy SNES 3D.
I'm entirely fine with the series experimenting with things like all-range mode, but complete genre shifting like Adventures, half baked single player modes and crappy on foot missions like Assault, and a complete loss of proper on rails and incredibly repetitive missions like Command are things I'm not. Just stating that the old games were liked because they were good and not at all because they were on rails shooters is just silly. Of course every well-liked game was liked because it was good. It's how the games play that defines them--and the Star Fox series has had three failed attempts at expanding the series (Command's sales flop proves just how sick people were of it). I can't imagine a fourth completely new take is going to be welcomed after three failures. |

I really wouldn't consider on-foot actually outside the comfort zone though - it fits with the mold of being a sci-fi action game. It just needs more polishing. Command actually strayed less - it was just all free-range mode - the "strategy" part was very minimal and isn't really that obtrusive.
And again, I refute that example of people getting sick of "new takes" (which I don't really consider new takes as they are more of adding stuff, just not properly handled) with 3DS Star Fox 64 not selling well too. |

I would argue Star Fox 64 3D's lack of success was a direct extension of the series' squandered legacy following three failures. Had the series remained consistent and not repeatedly changing it up confusing everyone about what the series is supposed to be like I think the status of the series now would be very different.

I just want the next Star Fox game to be like StarFox Adventures. That game was amazing (and very Zelda like).
I don't think on-rails games do as good as they used to, and $60 won't be "worth it" to a Star Fox 64 game to many gamers today (except small niches like us). Retro should make a sequel to that game, with an atmosphere rivalling Metroid Prime and gameplay like Zelda. *drools* |

If retro is handling it, I would be cool with a mixture of on foot and flying segments, I think the concept in assault (with vast online modes) could be done so well by a good studio. Hopefully some kind of SF announcement occurs for Wii U as it's one of the franchises I want to return most.

Star Fox Assault is on my list of games I wish I had played. I remember that at the time it wasn't liked by many people so I didn't play it. I bought it for really cheap about a year ago, played 2 levels, and then a different more exciting game came out and I hadn't played it since. I'm going to have to try it again on some rainy day. I loved every other Star Fox game and completed them all. I really hope a new one comes out on the Wii U.

I am hoping Retro makes Star Fox Wii U and goes for the all-out ground-to-space battle carnage that Free Radical promised with Star Wars Battlefront 3. In other words, you run around on a planet shooting other players, jump into your Arwing and fly into space where you continue the battle.
I bought it virtually day one. I'm so glad I did, as I got a fair bit of entertainment from the single player mode, and split-screen multiplayer with three friends joining in is an absolute classic. The series has always been about changing up. There is no such thing as a definitive Star Fox gameplay style.
