A fully playable browser version of Wolf3D! Hiding behind an age gate and a "North American" versus "International" question. Thanks id!

Go give it a try.

EDIT: Also, there's a director's commentary with John Carmack on Youtube. And I'm Nick Breckon.

EDIT2: Also, free iOS version.

EDIT3: ALSO! Steam sale. Wolf Pack (includes Wolf 3D, Spear and Return for $3.75) and id super pack.

Many happy memories of Wolf3d, listening tot he director's commentary it's funny to hear Carmack chuckle about the various changes for the Nintendo version of the game. Cool insight into stuff you'd never really consider as a kid.

It's not Flash. I'm guessing HTML5 or some weird Javascript wrapper.

Hah, I'm really surprised it uses <div>s instead of Canvas - seems like it would be more easily portable from the original code with the latter. Weird!

No obvious reason why it shouldn't work for you. JavaScript disabled?

No secrets unfortunately, but I had some problems both with frame rate and opening doors (textures got all weird, I played in Firefox 11.0).

By the way, does anyone know if you can enable the debug mode in this version? From 3D Realms' website:

Quote:
  • The debug mode is activated with a different command line parameter depending on what version of the game you have.
  • v1.0 -> -next (Once in the game, press [ctrl] [tab] [enter] to activate)
  • v1.1+ -> -goobers (Once in the game, press [lshift] [alt] [backspace] to activate)
  • Spear of Destiny -> -debugmode (Once in the game, press [lshift] [alt] [backspace] to activate)
None of these commands enable any debug mode as far as I can see. Not that it's important but it would be nice to just fool around a bit.

I remember having to make the window smaller to get it to run, now it runs in a browser and on phones. I feel so old.

Anyone else play the original Wolfenstein? I had it on my Apple IIe. Good times, the soldiers would become gum wads when you killed them and the guttural German they would shout was terrifying. Needless to say Wolfenstein 3d blew my mind when it came out.

I played Castle Wolfenstein in Dosbox recently and it was quite fun. Being chased by an SS trooper across screens and searching boxes frantically for a grenade was a nerve-wracking experience.

And 50% off the id super pack if you're feeling that way.
